Don’t believe the hype.

I doubt we’ll ever see see a tourney moment top the classic Third Strike Daigo vs. Justin matchup, but this definitely belongs in the history books. The footage was taken from the final round of the southeast major fighting game tournament (Final Round XII) in Atlanta, GA demonstrates why you never should celebrate till your opponent is officially K.O.’ed

The matchup was between Kensou (C. Viper) vs. Liston (using Sagat, and personal friend of mine from Chinatown Fair) engaged in an intense battle for a spot for the Top 16 out of 240 participants. I don’t wanna give anything away, but if you need a more detailed explanation, be sure to read the transcipt at the official YouTube URL.

Find that special taunt to show how much you care.

For those of you who enjoy using taunts (or personal actions as they’re officially called in SFIV), one fan put together a video feature on YouTube showcasing all of the characters. This is a great treat for anyone who’s come across a personal favorite, but ends up forgetting which selection amongst the 10 that are available. Here are just a few of my personal picks so far…

Blanka’s Personal Action #10 – scratches his butt and mocks the opponent by saying “I am stronger than you.”

Chun’s Personal Action #4 – lets out a hearty chuckle.

Fei’s Personal Action #5 – lays down and says “Boring…” (LOL, someone used this on me today before I beat him.)

Cammy’s Personal Action #7 – stands confidently and says “Is that all you can do?!?”

See all the characters here:

Fei Long, Cammy, Akuma, Gouken, Dhalsim, Blanka, Chun Li, Ryu, E. Honda, Zangief, Guile, Ken and Seth

M. Bison, Sagat, Vega, Balrog, Abel, C. Viper, Rufus, El Fuerte, Sakura, Rose, Dan and Gen

Enjoy.

Bridging the gap between game god and guitar god.

Titles like Guitar Hero and Rock Band are not just fun games to play. For many people, rocking out on a plastic axe with giant colored buttons stirs up old dreams of being up on stage tearing through an impossible solo before an arena full of adoring groupies. But as many rock fans quickly learn, reaching that level of proficiency takes a lot of often tedious practice.

For years now, Optek Music Systems has tried to bring guitar mastery to the legions of aspiring jukebox heroes. This weekend, the company announced the release of the Fretlight Video Player for PC, with an upcoming Mac release in early 2009. The technology allows you to watch video of an instructor while the notes he plays light up on a special Fretlight guitar in your hands. The best part is that it is an actual guitar that has been specially augmented with Optek’s technology, so you are not fooling around with a toy or other poor substitute. Once you are done with your lessons, you can go on to use the same guitar to play in a real band.

With this system, you learn finger placement on a real, quality musical instrument. When the teacher shows you an E chord on the video, that same chord lights up on the guitar in your hand. When he plays a more advanced piece, the same note progression dances across your fretboard. The video allows you to repeat or slow down the instruction as needed. When you aren’t using the software, the fretboard looks and functions just like any other.

You can learn more about the Fretlight Video Player by going to the official site. There is also a wide selection of music available that takes advantage of the Fretlight technology so you can play along and learn your favorite tracks quickly and efficiently. If you are a Guitar Hero addict thinking about teaching yourself the real deal, this might be just the thing for you.

Let the blood-sucking begin.

Stardock Games has been rolling out the carpet for their upcoming realtime strategy/action title Demigod with a series of trailers, each highlighting one of the game’s playable character classes.  Several hours ago the third video in this series, this time dedicated to the Vampire Lord class, was revealed.  The video is narrated by Brad Wardell, Executive Producer of Demigod at Stardock Games, and is certainly worth a watch.  In addition to some cool abilities, the video does a great job of demonstrating how a typical match might play out.

If you’re in my boat and missed out on the closed beta, I invite you to take solace in this new bit of official media.

Demigod promises to be a unique mix of action and strategy with roleplaying mechanics sprinkled lightly throughout.  The game is being developed by Gas Powered Games, including some of the key talent behind realtime strategy heavyweights like Total Annihilation and Supreme Commander.  It’s scheduled to release on April 14th in North America and has the potential to be a great new medium for competitive team-based gameplay.
