Your poll is set up all wrong. You can't lump arcade and multiple consoles in together. DD1 arcade compleatly rocked. DD1 NES also compleatly rocked, but was something different entirely. DD1 Genesis, C64, and Lynx were the same game as the Arcade (more or less), but all compleatly sucked. DD1 Master System was "eh", and DD1 Gameboy was something else entirely as well.
Ditto for all versions of 2 and 3
Great Double dragon games:
Super
1 Arcade
2 Arcade
1 NES
2 NES
3 NES
Good Double Dragon games:
2 PC Engine
1 Master System
too tired to comment on the rest.
By the way, anybody with a cab/Supergun need the Double Dragon 1 and 2 boards. They are dirt cheap and easy to find.

I agree that the C64 version of Double Dragon was a poor conversion, especially when C64 arcade ports usually blew away those on the 8-bit video game consoles. However, I though the Lynx version was great! The graphics were very close to the arcade game, although there wasn't as much of the playfield visible on the screen since the sprites were enlarged (so the characters could be as detailed as the arcade game). The gameplay was also very good, and it put up a decent challenge. It also had the two-player mode, something that was laughably absent from the shoddy NES version (er, guys, that's why the game is called Double Dragon).
Speaking of which, I never understood why the NES version is so revered, since it's virtually nothing like the arcade game. It's not a bad game, but it's not a great one either, and there were much better versions on both the SMS and Atari 7800. The NES version was Double Dragon in name only--an obvious attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the arcade game by attaching the license. It's about as close to the arcade version as the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man was to the Pac-Man arcade game. Yet, NES Double Dragon is often respected and 2600 Pac-Man is often dragged through the mud. Why is that?

Melf- That Mega Drive version of Double Dragon 2 is rather bad IMHO. The enemies are awfully cheap in this one- they will stand over you when you're down and keep punching in hopes of hitting you when you get up- and the game speed is too fast compared to the arcade.
Great:
DD1 Arcade
DD2 Arcade (Good for the most part, but the stages look way too similar to the ones in DD1)
Good:
DD1 SMS
SDD SNES (A tad too easy, but still good)
Double Dragon Neo-Geo (not bad, the bosses are cheap however)
Fair:
DD1 NES (They took the "Double" out of this one)
Forget It:
DD2 Mega Drive
DD3 Arcade
DD3 Genesis (A good translation of a risibly horrid arcade game)
You Can Not Be Serious:
DD1 Atari 2600 (Why even bother?)
DD5 Genesis/SNES/Jaguar (Bleh...)
My vote is cast for DD2 (arcade)
Edit- added DD1 2600. Added DD5 as well since it has to be said what an embarrassment this one is.
DD1 Arcade
DD2 Arcade
DD1 NES(The NES actually made the music 50x better)
DD2 NES(NES made the music medicore in this one)
R/SDD SF/SNES(Great with tons of extra moves that are actually useful. Unfortunately the game can get very repetetive even for a beat-em up).
I don't think you should even list DDV as it wasn't even made by Technos and deserves to be thrown into the pit of whathaveyou.
The arcade version of Double Dragon 1 is my favorite.
DD1 on SMS looked better than the NES' Single Dragon and it was closer to the arcade but something was lost in the gameplay. The NES version is more fun. I liked the Game Boy version more than both of them. I don't remember liking the 7800 one much. The C64 and 2600 versions sucked.
Then there's Game Gear Double Dragon which is quite different.
DD2 for the NES was good until you got to those platform jumping levels. It’s like the programmers were thinking to themselves "Hmm... I wonder if they’ve noticed how bad the controls are yet? Hey I know! Let’s add some disappearing platforms just to be safe!”

NES arcade ports usually aren't "ports", in the true definition. The graphics, sound, and sometimes core gameplay elements are altered to suit the NES' technical shortcomings. The basic gameplay concept is usually the same, but they're basically different games. However, this has often yielded some pretty nice results, and Double Dragon isn't the only NES "arcade port" to do that.
Bionic Commando, Life Force, Jackal, Strider (and of course, Double Dragon) are a few examples of these types of games, and they're all just as fun, if not more fun, than their arcade counterparts. That said, you can't really bash DD1 for being a "bad arcade port" because it isn't one.
My pick is Double Dragon 1 NES. I'm still trying to beat the damn thing.

Keep looking. It is definalty worth it. It is almost like the NES version. Much closer to the NES than arcade anyway. Levels are re-arranged however. It also features the best sprites in any double dragon game ever (Super included). The giant Arnold rip-off looks badass in this one.

I liked Double Dragon Nes when it initially came out, then I played the SMS version, and changed my mind quick. Not that its bad, I just didn't like it anymore. I had a love/hate affair with Double Dragon 2. The platform levels got on my nerves, and I couldn't do some of the moves when I wanted to, but I eventually got over that after playing it god knows how many times. One of the few Nes games that had an ending that was worth it.
Never did like DD3 arcade or nes; they just didn't click with me. I would say the Nes one was the lesser of two evils though.
I don't feel like commenting on the others other than saying its been too long since playing Return of Double Dragon and that DD 5 sucked ass.

IMO it's about as fun as a pile of dirt. I guess I was never into the arcade games much (I'm all about NES DD2) but the Lynx port was one of the most un-fun things I played on a system fairly bursting with un-fun software. If this is really an accurate port of the original arcade game, then I guess I don't like the original arcade game.
They could have at least given you some continues.
The Lynx port was by Telegames, that bizarro UK company that both sells overpriced gaming hardware / software on its website and creates new games for defunct systems. I'd love to see a well-researched article on them sometime. Hmm...
Come on dudes, Double Dragon II for NES is like one of the best games ever. Who couldnt love that Super Knee attack that sends the bad guys flying off the screen in like .05 seconds (complete with a loud gunshot noise no less). I swear that move alone puts the NES DDII at the top of the list for me. Even better hitting your friend "accidently" with that move so that he goes flying off the building.
And did i hear someone say the music sucked? DDII's NES soundtrack is a classic.

Ah Double Dragon, now theres a series of games I played endlessly as a kid, but you couldn't force me to play it these days.
I frequently play the PCB's of the original DD1 and 2 on lunch breaks. They hold up quite well.

Fun fact: The turbos on the NES Max are set perfectly for that move. Hold both of them down and press forward and you will knee your way accross the screen.

Ha! I remember doing exactly just that with my old 'Max. I felt sorry for any bosses (and other normally tough enemies) who were even remotely close to a cliff. Too bad I only play with the stock controllers these days. Maybe the NES Advantage could do the same thing?
for me it's:
Super Double Dragon by far...that music OWNS especially those remixes!
Arcade and NES Double Dragon 1 and 2 were good, albeit very different. Music owns here too, great for that lil' NES!
SNES Battletoads and Double Dragon I rather enjoyed (ALSO has some great choice tracks, with that trademark trumpet sample) but like it was said earlier, it's a Battletoads game with the DD characters tossed into the mix.

The difference is that Double Dragon NES is at least fun, while Pac-Man 2600 is a flickery, hella ugly,
I-want-to-shoot-myself mess.
When I was a kid I used to go over my friend Joe's house and play Double Dragon. It was okay fun. I never knew there was an arcade game, though, and I wouldnt have cared to try it actually (and to this day I still haven't). As for Pac-Man 2600, I tried it and was immediately looking for the rubbing alcohol to splash in my eyes. Of course there was a Pac-Man arcade! Everyone knew that! Even when they were a kid! The 2600 version... blech!
Yes, I realize you had fun with it when you were a kid, but hey little babies love to play with their shit and run around the house pissing everywhere, doesnt mean that its a good hobby at all.

I still play NES DD2 at work nearly every day. I don't know why, but I swear I play through it on a daily basis. I got the Knee down to a science.
The best part, IMO, was the great control you had, at all times, over ALL your moves. You could just bust them out whenever you wanted. I love Double Dragon 2.

Mzo's right about NES DD2. I loved the gameplay, as well as the cool level design. That stage where you have to avoid getting sucked out the door was awesome back in the day.
The other day someone gave me a copy of DD3 for Genesis. My god, what a steaming pile. Gameplay is nonexistent and the music is horrendous. The story is shit as well.
The genesis DD3 was the same as the arcade, which was a bag of ass in my opinion. I liked the nes DD3 better, although that's not saying much.

Why is everybody always down on the NES DD3? It fixes all of the arcade game's problems and controlls great. The only problem is that if you die before you pick up a new character it's game over. Still, I think it is way under rated and plays just about as good as DD2 NES.
