Power Ballads!
I've always been a sucker for a great powerballad, and am not ashamed to admit it either, there's something about one that is well done that seems to capture a spirit that a lot of other songs miss. Anyway, what are you favorites? Post mp3s if possible - I'll go first.
Edguy - Forever
http://home.earthlink.net/~station820/Edguy_Forever.mp3
Edguy are a heavy metal (neo-classical power metal to be exact) from Germany that have 7 albums already under their belt and their oldest member is only 26. The name may seem strange for a metal band (it was the name of the bandmember's school teacher, one called Edgar, they called him 'Edguy' to make fun of him) and may seem off-putting but I think its better than calling themselves 'mystical dragon' or some other cliched name. Anyway - they're a great band, "Forever" is taken from their new album "The Hellfire Club" that was just released in March 2004. If anyone wants mp3s of their heavier stuff I can send them to ya - AIM me @ station82o

Here's some of my favorites:
18 and Life - Skid Row
Carrie - Europe
Love of a Lifetime - Firehouse
High Enogh - Damn Yankees
Wind of Chnage - Scorpions
When the Children Cry - White Lion
Yeah they are pretty common but I really enjoy them.

Whenever I hear that I can't help but think of The Wizard. Which makes it a great song in my book.

Thats more of a rocker - Queensryche's real ballad (and their best known song) was "Silent Lucidity").

No, because there has to be an assumption of Power about the band.

I think Motley Crue has a couple of great ballads, of all bands.. "Without You" from the Dr. Feelgood album, and "Glitter" (at least the remix version).

That eerie solo near the middle of the song.. what kind of instrument is that? It's distorted, yet very cool..

Every Rose has it's Thorn - Poison. It's a given. Hair Metal + Ballad = The Power Ballad.
Just about every song by Journey, ever. Come on, Journey practically invented the power ballad. I'm not even going to list the songs.
November Rain - GNR

November Rain is another, - I recently listened to it and forgot how fantastic it was, lots of emotion in the solol. And definitly as Six was saying, the classic ballads by Journey but those are a given.

How can you say that? To not like the song you would have to have a serious problem with GNR to start with, and if you do have issues with them there are other songs you would find far more annoying.
