I know it's tough to find with our current search function, but there are already a couple of threads devoted to this very topic. For the record, I like Y's.
Yep. The "real" one, by Falcom themselves for the PCE SCDRR (The Dawn of Ys) and the one for the SFC, by Tonkin House (Mask of the Sun). Obviously, the latter will be ignored for any future port. It's not by Falcom, after all.

Mask of the Sun wasn't ignored for the Ys VI bonus disc that had emulations of Ys 1-5. They put that on there instead of Dawn of Ys, probably because they already had a SNES emulator included for Ys V and didn't want to bother emulating a Duo. I have a feeling Dawn of Ys will be the base for the Ys IV remake, though.

Actually, didn't Hudson develop the PCE Ys IV internally (like Ys I-III on PCE)? Falcom was working on the canceled Mega CD release but I don't believe an actual Falcom developed Ys IV ever saw the light of day.
The only console projects I'm aware of Nihon Falcom doing themselves are Popful Mail for Mega CD, Ys V/Expert on Super Famicom and Socerian for Dreamcast. Everything else was done by Hudson, Tonkin House, Riot, GMF, Sega, Sims, Epoch, Microcabin, NEC Interchannel, Victor, DigiCube, Taito, Konami, etc...
There's always room for more Ys threads! I have a few translation projects underway for 'em btw - Ys4-Dawn of Ys is on the todo list.
Sidetracking here, but it just so happens I made some progress today on hacking the new YsVI Ark of Napishtim (import PC version). Do you guys think it's worth the trouble to continue with it given Konami will release it for PS2? Even so, I bought it and am pretty intent on following through if I can get a Japanese translator for the most part.

Supposedly a typo in one of the older manuals from where it caught on (I think).

Yeah, that's right. I always thought it was them, but they never touched consoles it turns out.
First "Dawn of Ys" hacked testing screenshot below. Only an uppercase font is supported, but I'm sure diehard fans will overlook that.

We all know that the PS2, not to mention the PSP one, can't touch the Windows version of this game. The resolution and texture detail make of it impossible to port without big deficiences. Don't stop it; the Windows version will always be the version to go with.

Well, yes and no. There's some confusion regarding which console titles did Falcom develope. Many of them, as Ys I - II, were developed by other companies with the assistance of Falcom. Falcom co-developed Dawn of Ys with Hudson Soft, though it's not clear which part did each company, it's assumed that, at least, Falcom created the storyline. Kaze no Densetsu Xanadu I and II for the PCE, for instance, were entirely developed by them, even if the first one was published by Nec.

Are you sure? I don't remember any mention of Nihon Falcom actually being involved in Ys IV production on either PCE or SFC, just that Hudson and Tonkin House made each game going off the general storyline/assests Falcom laid out. Falcom was working with Sega on the MegaCD version of Ys IV, but that ended when the Sega Falcom collaberation fell apart... I'm not sure about the Dawn of Ys being canon while Mask of the Sun isn't though. Mask of the Sun after all was included in the complete collection and Falcom actually listed it (not the Dawn of Ys) on their old english Ys franchise page...
Dawn of Ys is canonical, and wouldn't be surprised if Mask of the Sun also was after the complete collection thing. The Falcom and Hudson co-development in the former was said back in the day. Falcom has always been helping the companies which licensed their titles in some form or other, especially Hudson and Sega. I remember a "Sega Falcom" label created to handle the MD ports.

Oh yeah, I know that... I just wasn't aware of the level of involvement (wether or not Falcom actually 'co-developed' the Hudson ports).

Actually, it was just the MegaCD games iirc (which Falcom would port), Sega handled any MD ports inhouse. The only game to come out of the Sega Falcom collaberation was Popful Mail for MegaCD sadly (Ys IV didn't make it)... makes me wonder if the whole 'Sister Sonic' debacle was what led to them parting ways?

Not really. Dragon Slayer: Eiyuu Densetsu was, for instance, another Sega-Falcom game. And actually, Popful Mail didn't get the Sega-Falcom tag.

Actually seems you're right, at least so far as packaging/boxart (my assumption that Sega Falcom was formed for Mega CD games was off something I'd read in an old Gamefan). A little further investigation shows that all the 'Sega Falcom' MD/MCD games (Dragon Slayer 1-2, Lord Monarch & Popful Mail) were actually credited to Sega for "reprogrammed game", Falcom for "original game" and Sega Falcom for "computer program"... making it seem maybe Falcom didn't actually develop any of them? Or was just overseeing development, I'm not sure? :/
Also worth noting that all the Sega Falcom games released in 1994 (Sorcerian was a 1991 MD release and credited solely to Sega for reprogramming) making it seem that this partnership didn't last long at all.
In my search I did find a handy JP website crediting the various Ys releases though. Out of everything it seems Falcom themselves were only resposible for...

-Ys IV: Mask of the Sun (MegaDrive) unreleased
....was creditied to Sega Falcom, making me wonder if Mask of the Sun really is the "true" version of Ys IV? I'd always heard Sega Falcom was planning a Mega CD release of The Dawn of Ys, but other sites substantiate Mask of the Sun MD. :/
Also, a french wesite I stumbled upon mentions that there were originally going to be 3 versions of Ys IV (SFC by Tonkin House, MD/CD by Sega Falcom & PCESCD2 by Hudson) and each were going to alter in both story and mechanics (like the 3 releases of Poful Mail) and all were suppossed to carry "Mask of the Sun" as the subtitle. Which makes it seem maybe the "true" Falcom supported Ys IV being neither the Hudson nor Tonkin games... in any case, it seems Hudson's game doesn't hold any higher authority than Tonkin's as far as being the "real" Ys IV or for Falcom involvement ("Mask of the Sun" credits it's original game program to Falcom and Falcom stuck their name on the box also).
I suspect the Taito remake will also carry "Mask of the Sun" for it's subtitle, regardless of which version it's chiefly based off...
And for anyone wondering about the other versions of Ys...

That's the list for the Ys games published by Falcom. Every other game published by others but co-developed by Falcom is not there, so it doesn't help much.
As for the Ys IV thing, since the MD version(s) were cancelled, we can only speculate.

Nope, it's for developed games. For example, Hudson published Ys V for Falcom.

not true. they published brandish and popful mail themselves as well. as well as expert versions of brandish and ys v. why in the fuck we got brandish in the US and not ys v or popful mail is beyond me, however.

To clear this up a bit, Falcom only published Brandish 2 Expert. Brandish & Brandish 2 are both Koei games. All of the others you are correct about.

And again, nope. Brandish 2 Expert was made and published by Koei themselves. I forgot Popful Mail, which was indeed published by Falcom. So there're two Falcom games for the SFC: Ys V -Ushinawareta Suna no Miyako Kefin- and Popful Mail. Ys V was remade as "Ys V Expert", so a total of three, if you prefer.
