pony car comeback?

Will the pony car ever return as the sort of vehicle that sells in the tens of thousands, or will it be resigned to being just a niche product?

I still see tons of new Ford Mustangs. Unless they don't count anymore.

But I think that pony cars have been somewhat replaced by rice rockets, either legitimately (Subaru WRX, Lancer Evo), or illegitimately (Honda Civic, Acura Integra).

I consider my WRX a modern day "pony car".

I'd still rather have a GTO.

Good damn choice. GTO > other muscle cars. The new ones are nice, too.

A good start and a great classic, but Plymouth Superbird > other muscle cars.

Hehe. I forgot about the Superbird. The Dodge Dart rocked, too.

I was looking for a new car a couple months ago and I really wanted a pony type car.

I ended up with an 1989 Honda Wagovan.

Ill pass judgement when I see one in person, but I kinda like it. But then I like the Magnum too.

Either way, 6.1L Hemi + RWD = It would really really have to be butt ugly for me not to consider it.

Don't take his comments too seriously--in the same post he asked someone to PM him for ricer mod upgrades.

I think the Charger looks pretty damn good, but not nearly as good as the gorgeous Magnum.

The 2005 Mustang is a step in the right direction. Now if they can style the 2005 Cobra off of the old GT500... that'd be a huge leap in the right direction.

And Mike, about the new GTO... bite your tongue. Had the car been called anything other than GTO, it'd be an inoffensive machine, but Pontiac is taking big, sloppy shit all over a legend by selling an ugly Holden as a "GTO."

No sir, I don't like it.

But i thought WRX/Evos were'nt really rice rockets. Theyre rally cars.

Also, don't go bashing Integras. Being an owner of one, I take great offense to that, and I really don't know why. I hate my car. I hate Acura.

I want a WRX so bad it hurts.

Grave made a good point concerning the ugly Holden. With all the Mustangs around GM is not represented like it used to be in the old days with the Z/28, Trans Am.

If you knew anything about WRX's, you would know that sticky 225/45/17 tires and rims make a world of difference in handling and grip. Since stock exhaust systems on turbo'd cars have large amounts of backpressure, installing a free flowing catless turboexhaust system and uppipe (removing the 3 restrictive catalytic converters) are proven to increase up to 20whp and almost 25whp on the Sti.

You don't know shit about cars and if you want to see a mod list to my car with all my drag racing time slips and dyno charts, I will gladly show you that these mods aren't ricey at all.

If you consider my Stage 4 FP18g turbo upgrade, Sti injectors, JDM STi intercooler, Walbro fuel pump, Samco intercooler hoses, custom tuned Cobb ECU, etc etc rice then you need to reconsider what the term rice means.

It GM's Hallmark.

Look at the Nova. From one of the best cars with oodles of potential from the '70s, into a re-badged Toyota Corolla.

At least Dodge gave the 80's re-hashed FWD charger a Shelby Package.

It would have been a WHOLE lot worse if Ford had taken thier original plan in the 80's.

The Ford Probe was slated to be the replacement for the Mustang. Until Ford fans and common sense smacked them upside the head.

Exactly.

"Rice" mods include such things as:

Stickers
Fart cans
Neon tubes
anything "Fast and Furious" branded
spinners
cleared tail/head lights
And big ass spoilers that look like they were made in high school shop class.

I got nothing against ricers, whatever foats the boat. Some of them cars look pretty nice. Just not for me.

Just for fun: http://www.sfu.ca/~tychueh/rice/

The new GTO follows the same exact principles that the original did over 30 years ago. It's a strictly average looking car with a nice engine under the hood. It's not meant to "stand out". While stand out today, just imagine if that's ALL that was on the road, as it was when they were new. Now we're getting a strictly performance car, with a good interior, a powerful engine with ~400 hp (with the LS2 for the 2005 model year), and this time around, decent handling, at a very reasonable price. I don't see why everyone's complaining; sure, it looks sedate, but isn't that exactly how the original muscle cars were back when they were new?

Ouch. I guess that's what I get when I don't read three paragraphs out of once sentence.

I don't know, it may have been ok for the original GTO to dress plain in the 1960s, but I rather like a bit of 70s glam.
