Jeremy Blaustein Podcast Interview (A MUST!)

http://www.mgstus.org/downloads/audi...episode011.mp3

Jeremy Blaustein, translator of Snatcher and Metal Gear Solid (among other games), sounds off on Kojima's enormous ego, love blooming on the battlefield, severed arms that talk, and his unique perspective on the localization business.

GREAT interview. That guy was so candid about everything.

I know it's because of budget restraints, but I always wondered why studios favored recording voice-actors separately and then editing them together. It sounds so much better when you get them all in a room so they can rap back and forth with each other.

You'd think that, but honestly, Family Guy and Pixar movies record most of their voices seperately. It's not really that.

What he said that was more insightful I think, and something I never thought of, was that having the script translator present to direct the voices makes a huge difference, because, as the writer, he can communicate the tone he's going for and the context.

I also enjoyed him calling Kojima's scripts retarded and awful.

He's right. I don't know how on Earth Kojima got the reputation for his scripts. Snatcher was well-written, but any talent he had was pissed away with the MGS series.

Snatcher may be good, but it's also transparently derivative. If it were a movie, people would laugh at what a rip off of Blade Runner it is. I need to play Policenauts, though.

Lol, that's so true.

Any word on when that fan translation of Policenauts will be done? I've a modded PSone and a copy of it waiting to be played.

Yes, but you'd think it would flow better and allow for better acting/reacting to the other cast members. Family Guy is basically voiced by one guy anyway. He does do a good job singing duets with himself, though.

I'm not saying it doesn't help, but it isn't what makes the difference most of the time.

Masses of fanboys overanalyzing his games to the point where they think hold the meaning of life or something.

This was a very interesting listen. Sadly, these problems with translations and voice acting in the industry don't surprise me at all.

Voice acting with the actors together in the same room is always, always better than without. Just because it's a flaw that can be dealt with doesn't make the end result as good as if it was done otherwise.

And yeah, Kojima can't write to save his life. We didn't need a podcast to tell us that.

I'm not so sure about this myself. Most Disney movies are recorded seperately, in fact almost all major animation has all the actors done individually I believe.

I've been saying that Kojima's scripts are the equivalent of a toilet filled to the brim with steaming, dripping diarrhea for years now. It's nice to finally see you guys coming around.

The MGS series would have been 10,000x better if this retard had had nothing to do with it.

Keep in mind he's behind several of the top 10 corniest lines in post 16-bit history. Good on him for coming out and disowning love on the battlefield though That's one of the all-time worst offenders. He still stood behind "what is a man?" though.

Great interview. You can hear the bitterness in Blaustein's voice. Snatcher CD was a fave of mine too. I never knew about the James Sunderland/SH2 voice actor (Guy Cihi) stuff. Looking forward to part 2 of the interview.

Kojima is a good game designer, bad scripts aside. Kojima is responsible for what's right about MGS as well as what's wrong with it.

True. I forgot what a close hand he has in the design process as well. Double-edged sword, there.

The annoying part is that very MGS game that's announced is supposed to be Kojima's last, giving me false hope that the next one will actually be good, but then the fucker ends up lying and keeps making more. Stop it, asshole.

I don't care how good he is. His games are driven so much by the story that without the proper care it takes to craft a good script the whole game is ruined.

I'd always wondered if that story about the voice actor for James Sunderland was true or not. What a dick. The fact that he considers his acting to be serious business now is the height of hilarity.
