Bahn Unplugged: Volume 7

Having problems with the 360? Reports around the web reveal that you're not alone.

It should be noted that Microsoft does in fact offer several warnings:

To avoid jamming the DVD drive and damaging discs or the Xbox 360 console:

  • Remove discs before moving the console or tilting it between the horizontal and vertical positions.
  • Never use cracked discs. They can shatter inside the console and jam or break internal parts.
  • When the console is vertical do not use discs that are smaller the standard DVDs and CDs."

Llama's JT put it best when he said "I wonder how many of us 360 users read [the] manuals?" followed by "People should not take this as blaming Microsoft for the problem. Again it should be common sense not to move a high speed disc device with the disc in... I'm sure the majority of problems involve user error to some degree.

So what does Microsoft have to say about this? So far, there's been no official response just yet, but I can imagine that one will follow soon. Perhaps they'll do the right thing by offering to repair the drives which the folks at identified as a "small area" within the laser aseembly that's at fault.

One thing is for sure, I never plan on moving my 360 anywhere while a game is running. Much of my library came from personal purchases instead of the usual graces form PR channels, so you can bet I plan on supersizing my TLC for the Microsoft's latest nex-gen wonder.

The bottom line: Users need to be MORE careful with their hardware.

And speaking of 360, we've got an upcoming feature in the works (as well as several reviews big and small dedicated to the current launch library). Yes, I said small -- this holiday season has been kicking our asses, so we've decided to officially roll out a new installment aptly named "GN Quickies" that will offer a short 'n' sweet summary of the latest releases. Look forward to the first batch next Monday.

Also, stay tuned for my first hardware review in um...well, months. Turtle Beach recently sent me an awesome peripheral that allows me to enjoy simulated 5.1 surround sound AND be able to conversate with other XBL gamers! All I can say for now is that they totally rock, although I can't shake the feeling that I am back in the 1980s whenever I have them on. Don't worry, I'll have a pic of me wearing them very soon! (Bleh, I am such a dork.)

Oh that note, I am out to play you know what... Don't worry -- every edition won't be 360-centric. (Most of the staff probably wish I'd find something else to talk about and change my IM away msgs to something other than "playing Xbox 360". I'll lose interest eventually... or not. :)
