It's been expressed many times before, but I'll probably never get tired of acknowledging it myself: summer sucks for gaming. Aside from a few *cue visual reference of two fingers together* notable games worth picking up, this time of year is notorious for being a relatively dull and uneventful. For many of us, it's the perfect excuse to find other alternatives to keep ourselves entertained, like... getting some fresh air for a change – hitting the beach, taking in a few movies or if you're like me, you develop a renewed interest for drawing. This went on for about oh, several weeks now, and it was rather refreshing. I even finally decided to educate myself on the finer parts of Photoshop and can add digital coloring to my list of artistic talents.

So what's this all got to do with gaming? After all, the context of "Got Game?" suggests that I'd be ranting about... well, games. To be honest, I just couldn't bring myself to park my rear in front of the TV and play anything. Remember awhile back when I wouldn't shut up about Dead or Alive 4? Gave up on that. Burnout Revenge? Passed. Even the Tomb Raider: Legend began to fade shortly after beating it in a week. Things feel so different than the 8 and 16-bit eras. Back then, games used to captivate me for much longer periods. They were more challenging. They were memorable and best of all – there was a much greater variety of entertaining content that was worth devoting your time to. How come it doesn't seem like that anymore?

Yeah, I know there are games like Guild Wars, Oblivion and WOW.... but why aren't they're more addictive single-player games that incite gamers to play them over and over? Am I just being overly critical? I don't think so. I can count on both hands all the 360 games that I'd wholly recommend to friends... to me, there should be more. Much more. It has me wondering if the PS3 is going to leave me just as disappointed. I already have a difficult time accepting that Sony expect us to fork over a minimum of $500 just to own the equivalent of a barebones unit. If I'm going to invest THAT much money – I want games that are going to offer me some thrills to remember and will keep me coming back for more. Why is that more gamers show a lot more interest in Xbox Live Arcade games than what's intended to be cutting edge technology? Just saying...

And while I'm on the subject of Xbox Live Arcade, I'll take this opportunity to send a clear message to developers endeavoring to give their back catalog of classic games a new lease of life: quality control. I recently purchased Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting for XBLA and it's by far one of my greatest regrets ever. I won't get into the details here and direct you to the review (yeah, shameless plug) – let's just say that Capcom really should take more responsibility to properly accomodate their fans. Here was a game that everyone was expecting... hoping... would turn out magnificent. Instead we got something that's barely playable, suffers from more connection and latency issues than Xband and isn't even emulated correctly. Is there any excuse for that? I don't think so. As much as I was eager to get my hands on this game – I would have preferred that it was canned altogether instead of half-assing it. Hopefully this will be the first and last time something like this happens again. The gaming public won't stand for it...

Well now would be a good time to get off my soapbox and turn the attention over to the rest of the crew who took the opportunity to discuss what they've been up to. I'm sure they were all collectively less bitter too. *heh*

p.s. Next month, we'll return to the usual visual imagery beyond just my personal space. Yeah, I'm lazy. :p
