Now for the part everyone has been waiting for, the million-dollar question:
Between Doom 3 or Half-Life 2, which first-person shooter is the best?
It really depends on what you’re looking for in a game. Doom 3 plays very similarly to the older Doom installments, only with graphics and sound updated for the year 2004. Playing Doom 3 is like watching a horror movie, only now, you’re in it. The environments are very linear, but also very creepy, and a lot of the times you will find yourself jumping out of your pants as a zombie or imp bursts through the wall to scare the bejeezus out of you. The gameplay is basic, blast-everything-that-moves, and you won’t find yourself sneaking around or using pieces of the environment to your advantage. You’ll just be blasting away between scares, and that’s what Doom has always been all about. Half-Life 2 is more like watching a sci-fi adventure movie, with a good continuous plot, likable characters, and lots of action. The graphics of both games are superb and better than any FPS before. The bottom line? If you like horror movies, you’ll like Doom 3; if you like action/adventure you’ll like Half-Life 2 more. If you like overall better gameplay, however, I would choose Half-Life 2, which gives you more choices and open-ended play.
