In November 1996, collector Marco Kerstens purchased several Videopac EPROMs which had been found at a flea market in the Netherlands. Included in the batch was an unreleased game that displayed the name "Jake" on the title screen. As no official title was known, "Jake" became the game's de-facto name among the Videopac community. The game was developed by GST Video, so "Jake" probably refers to Jake Dowding, who is known to have been a developer for GST at this time.
In later years, additional prototypes of the game were discovered, sometimes with documentation indicating that the official title was Martian Threat. Later Martian Threat discoveries appear to be slightly further along in development than "Jake" was, so fan-made reproductions of the game are based on "Martian Threat" prototypes.
