The Labyrinths

The Quest begins with the Ringmaster secretly hiding the ten Rings of Power deep in gloomy dungeons, crystal caverns, mysterious shifting halls and infernoes of still molten lava. To succeed in your Quest, you must overcome forces of evil so awesome that your physical prowess must be matched by unstinting courage and supreme gallantry. – Instruction Manual, Page 6

The Rings are hidden in one of four kinds of Labyrinths, mazes that the Heroes must navigate to obtain their prize. Rings (or exits) always reside near the bottom of a Labyrinth. The Heroes, who enter the maze near the top center, must make their way south, past monsters and other hazards. Each Labyrinth presents a specific kind of challenge for our intrepid adventurers.

The Dungeons

The Dungeons

These are in castles which were built by men and then captured by the Ringmaster's nightmare armies. – Page 7

The most straightforward of the Labyrinths, the Dungeons are rock rooms carved of stone and marble, represented on screen by huge black squares. All the Heroes except the Phantom must walk around the Dungeon walls to proceed. The Phantom can pass through the Dungeon walls.

Crystal Caverns

Crystal Caverns

The Windwielders built these labyrinths with invisible walls at the Ringmaster's command. – Page 10

Hewn from transparent crystalline rock, the walls of the Crystal Caverns are not visible to player or Hero. When Heroes first enter the Caverns, they are shown a glimpse of the walls, which quickly vanish. During play, the walls become visible only while a Hero touches a wall. The Phantom can easily pass through the crystalline walls.

Infernal Infernoes

Infernal Infernoes

These towers of lava are kept molten by the Ringmaster's magic. – Page 8

The walls of the Infernal Infernoes glare red with the searing heat of volcanic lava, kept perpetually molten by the evil magic of the Ringmaster. Their touch is death to every Hero, including the Phantom. Monsters, unfortunately, are immune to the Infernoes' heat.

Shifting Halls

Shifting Halls

The Earth shivers under the Ringmaster's evil spell. The very walls of the castles conspire to block the Heroes. – Page 9

Fueled by magic, the Dungeon-like walls of the Shifting Halls have a life of their own. Every few seconds, the entire maze shifts itself to the right, trapping Hero and monster alike within the stone walls. Being so caught will slow a Hero's journey to the Ring, as well as make him an easy mark for wandering monsters. However, the Phantom feels right at home in the Shifting Halls, since he cannot be trapped by the rock.
