The Basics: For the 800th entry in its long-running Worms series, Team 17 is going back to its roots with a traditional 2D update on the PSP and DS. In addition to a nice makeover with pre-rendered graphics for a "2.5D" look, Team 17 is retooling things for the shorter play length afforded to handhelds, as well as streamlining the interface, which should make for easy pick-up-and-play.
We have also been assured that the new items and weapons have been delicately balanced to keep the mult-player fun and fair. The real hook, however is the 4-player support, which will include an online mode using a Wi-Fi connection. But underneath it all will be the same Tank Wars-inspired turn-based combat and goofy sense of humor that has defined the series since its inception.
What do we think? Anyone looking closely at this title knows exactly what to expect. The Worms games have always been good, simple fun, and Open Warfare doesn’t look to change up the formula very much. Still the power of the new handhelds coupled with the Wi-Fi support are definitely substantial enough to justify a new release. Worms has always been a social game, and it’s not bad for a casual play. THQ may just have a hit on their hands.
