Getting the Full Experience
But what about those who haven't played the first Digital Devil Saga? While you can play DDS2 as a standalone game, investing the time to go through the first game beforehand is well worth it. Not only is it a fantastic RPG, but it also sets the stage for all the huge events taking place in DDS2. If you just dive straight into DDS2, you may find yourself lost in dialogue peppered with names, events, and game-specific terms that you will be completely unfamiliar with. After all, answers without questions can be every bit as confusing as questions gone unanswered.
In the end, the DDS games have been a fantastic ride, filled with engaging and challenging gameplay, fantastic visual and setting design, a thoughtful and entertaining story, and a cast of characters who I couldn't help but fall in love with. These are undoubtedly my favorite RPGs released this year, and will undoubtedly provide me with fond gaming memories for many years yet to come. And while this Digital Devil Saga may have reached its conclusion, there's always the hope that Atlus will bring us the Devil Summoner games or another all-new Shin Megami Tensei offshoot again in the near future.
