King of Fighters 02/03

A double dose of classic combat, SNK style.

The presentations of both games remain intact, and the music and sound are arcade-perfect. All of that is icing on the cake though, because the most noteworthy addition to this duo of games is full Xbox Live support. With online support, you can easily relive your memories of the quarter line from the comfort of your own home. Finding competition is a snap, and both games allow you access the XBL friends list from any game mode - meaning you can jump right into the online fray whenever you get the urge to do so.

Both games also have extensive stat-tracking, so you'll be able to keep on top of your performances and your ranking by week, month, game type, friends, and overall. KoF 2002 lets players view a game lobby and freely enter games outside of Quick or Optimatches, and KoF 2003 lets players organize a complete network tournament with up to 100 entrants gunning for the top, and with all sorts of customization options to boot. SNK NeoGeo gets major love for retrofitting these games with online play, no question.

King of Fighters has always been a major player in the world of fighting games, and the royal treatment that the series is given here in this double pack is proof that SNK NeoGeo knows it. The games themselves aren't the best, but when you have to live up to prior installments - some ranking up there with the best fighting games ever created - it's hard to be too mad about it. Besides, the games aren't terrible in the slightest, and with all the extra functions and bonuses, the King of Fighters 2002/2003 double pack for Xbox is still a worthy purchase for any gamer looking for a taste of the good old days.

p.s. Xbox Live online fighting support is genius!. Seriously, it is. That's nigh-infinite replay value; makes the pack worth a look by itself. Fans - go get it.
