Perhaps European Assault's greatest flaw is that it doesn't really try to innovate. The developers incorporated some squad elements to the gameplay, but the results are less than spectacular. Your squad mates will run blindly into oncoming fire, often meeting a grim end only minutes into the mission. They aren't too keen on backing you up either, and would often prefer to take on a tank by themselves rather than lay down some cover fire. This results in you basically having to do everything yourself. It's mostly for the better, though, since way too many medkits are wasted just trying to keep them alive, and sending them to their death means little more than reducing the amount of curing items you'll have for the next stage. Let them have fun with that Panzer tank, I say!
By Any Means Necessary
While your comrades are busy earning medals of their own, you'll be busy wondering how to best achieve each stage's multiple objectives. The story cannot progress until a certain number has been achieved, and how you go about doing so is not entirely linear. The tension of knowing that allied forces will be slaughtered by an enemy machine gun nest unless you can signal an air strike will force you to come up with some inventive ideas. Should I take out that tank first? Should I use my bazooka on the tank or use grenades and save it for the enemy HQ up ahead?
Fight the Good Fight
Regardless of its minor flawsEuropean Assault delivers the action and intense atmosphere you've come to expect from the Medal of Honor games. The presentation and gameplay are solid and the missions are varied enough to warrant more than a single playthrough. If you were turned off to the franchise after Rising Sun or are just tired of WWII shooters in general, there's plenty here to make you a believer once again.
