  1. LB log - 20140818

I think I'm finally at a point where I can manage my time properly on the weekends. I didn't succumb to any kind of extra naps through the course of the days.

A while ago I wrote that reading Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds was going to be quick and entertaining, but unfortunately I said as much before I reached this chapter on alchemy. The tone of the narrative didn't suddenly change, but reading one account to the next of a given person who was brought ...

The party actually went well, in my opinion. I'm glad we went. The kind of conversation and level of engagement was different than that of the prior week.

On the way home from that, we visited Fry's, and the visit confirmed what seemed to be the case the last time we went there about a year ago - the place sucks now. Half of the shelves are barren and a substantial portion of product on the floor is merchandise that isn't electronics based. Toys, perfumes, As Seen on TV fare were ...

My wife left a nice surprise for me on my new Ipod today. It made me genuinely laugh. It helped keep my mood up throughout the day, which was rather easy today as I was able to move from one stop to the next with minimal downtime between each.

Another open Saturday leads us to be attendant of a birthday party, this of my cousin's husband. They moved to a new house a while ago and I haven't been there yet. I also didn't submit any kind of gift for the baby shower of their first child. ...

I'm happy to report that using a Bluetooth piece with an Ipod Nano is a perfectly acceptable means to have a portable audio source on you for an entire day (well, more like eight hours) with practically no interference to physical activity or function. Once I wrapped the Ipod in an additional plastic bag to ensure that it didn't get any errant touches from my pocket, it was smooth sailing the rest of the day until the battery was low on the Bluetooth. Yes, I think this will be very useful.

  5. LB log - 20140814

My wife's been sick for a while, having something to do with a persistent cough and a sore throat. It finally spread to me, though I don't seem to be suffering as badly for it. It is bad enough that it made me lethargic enough to not play songs nor exercise yesterday. It didn't help matters that the route run yesterday went on for at least two hours longer than normal, and this was due to the amount of returns which I had to take with me after every stop. It wasn't until midday that I finally had ...

Number 3520. This is the one that I used predominantly in the week of the St. Louis trips. Shifting felt very good and doing all the stops that required back ins happened without any kind of trouble or even repositioning. Stop, aim, back in, done. This was the case until I got to the final two stops, which includes the home hub, where I have to dock into a bay door. If you curve it too much and (or? both?) hang on the clutch too much to ensure that positioning is good, the machine still bucks worse ...

  7. LB log - 20140811

When the work week is five days and closer to sixty hours than forty, it feels very strange to not be working.

I kept sleep schedule but snuck in another four hours of rest after waking up for the Sunday night NPR session. Hopefully I'll get to the point where I won't succumb to that and find things to do to keep me awake throughout the night so that, if anything, I simply start rest earlier on Monday afternoon for the start of my week.

Songs were pretty good today, ...

  8. LB log - 20140810

The party went well, in consideration for its purpose and intent. There were a lot of people there. My wife's picture that we gave as a gift was well received. I got to tell some trucking tales, and then leave early on out of consideration for my sleep schedule.

Upon the return trip home, my wife made the observation that most people still don't even address her by name upon the initial greeting. We've been married for five years. Yeah, OK, we usually don't take meausres to converse ...

  9. LB log - 20140809

My fears were confirmed upon arrival at the job today, as the truck that I had used in the course of the week and felt like it had a loose shift stick at the end yesterday was out for repairs today. I hope I didn't directly cause the machine to be put out of service. They recommended me to use another Peterbuilt tractor on the lot, but it wasn't until I took it out and around to the trailer and attempted to hook it up that I came to realize that its fifth wheel jaws were stuck and unable to lock ...

  10. LB log - 20140808

Well, things seem OK so far. Except now my gear shift for the tractor that I'm assigned seems to be getting very loose today. I will not be happy if that becomes a problem that puts the machine out of service in the near future. Also, I misplaced a tote carton at a stop, so that means extra work for the intended recipient. Sigh.

    Songs were decent enough.

No, really. I have to cross Cermak. No choice.

Let's see if the echo comes back.

What? Oh, hi. Well one new thing that I did today was an optional so called Shuttle Run to the nearby GM warehouse for purposes of exchanging empty 53' trailers. It definitely took a lot more distance for it to come to a complete stop than the usual 45' that I carry. A difference of eight feet, logically enough, is fairly significant when you're towing it on the road.

    Songs ...

  12. LB log - 20140806

I was able to both complete my route more rapidly today as well as skip the last stop. Home by 11. I told my Mom that I'd pay a visit sometime by the end of this week, so I took the opportunity to do so today. It was aggravating. My niece cries whenever I hold her alone now. Oh well. Now my Mom just needs to understand that.

Songs weren't that good today. At least my fingers weren't feeling as sore as yesterday. The athletic tape helped, I believe.

What a difference an axle makes. True to their word and as logic would dictate, the use of a single axle tractor makes for profoundly easier backing in respect of necessary space and amount of control in the hands of the driver. Now, if only the day didn't start an hour late due to inclement weather. Maybe I would have had a chance at being home before noon. Alas.

The only bad thing about the day is using yet another different transmission, which required me to become acclimated to ...

  14. LB log - 20140804

I still can't handle the freedom of the weekends, as far as the times that I should be asleep and awake in comparison to my work week.

I at least managed to do something slightly useful today in uprooting a bunch of overgrowth that has sprung up on the side of the garage. There were several thistle plants that I removed from the soil and eventually came to a discovery with them. Our house gets flies inside pretty regularly, I'd say I find and kill something like a few per day, and ...

  15. LB log - 20140803

I fought being sleepy today, but my body would have none of it. At least I didn't succumb to another fifteen hour sleep binge and found other things to do in the day, including going to see Guardians with my wife. She was happy to do it and I think I appreciated the time away from the house and being out with her as much as anything else. As for the movie, it was fine. Pretty much a paint by numbers movie given the subject, but that's all that can be reasonably expected of it.

    Now ...
