  1. Arcade Appreciation #13 - Deadstorm Pirates

by , 01 May 2012 at 04:29 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
The gun game genre isn't just about blasting everybody that gets in your face, it's also about compatibility. When you play a gun game with a friend, stranger, or loved one, you're cooperating with a common goal in mind. Many of the more recent entries in the genre(especially a series like the "Let's Go!..." games by Sega) grade you AND your partner. How well you do is intimately tied to how well the both of you work together. This may also carry deeper meaning. Perhaps you're out on a ...

Worked in the rain for a majority of the day. Just after getting home and finishing dinner I had a sudden and violent outburst of itchiness on my feet, likely because they were saturated over the course of four hours while I walked mostly throughout that duration. I'm just glad that I had this kind of day today as opposed to a few days ago - I have rest to look forward to now as opposed to returning to the scene. Speaking of scene, there was a TV commercial being shot at the store today. Unsurprisingly, ...

  3. Back from vacation.

by , 30 Apr 2012 at 11:06 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
My idea of a vacation is any time that isn't spent in Winter Haven. I've spent three years and six months in this city and I hate it. Really the fact that I decided to get into writing after just six months of living there should tell you all you would care to know regarding my opinion of this hole. Anyway it was a good time even though I spent most of it just hanging out with my family and watching movies.

First off I'm sure you're all just heartbroken about the lack of "Arcade ...

I wonder if I should get a cheap tablet PC of some sort so that I can find a program to take up kanji lessons. Despite writing in gigantic strokes, it probably would be nice to have something to directly reinforce proper writing immediately upon the action. In tax form news, I'm probably going to be crying about Form 1118 for some time to come, because of its size and volume of data bindings to establish. My PC is already grinding to render and preview the document, and I only have 1.5 of the 8 ...

I can't say I'm used to 7AM starts, but at least the extra time does give me the opportunity to fix up some things which I normally wouldn't bother with on a usual 8A or 9A start. Meanwhile, the cart machine shown all charge lights at Green when I started to use it later today - this indicates to me that the battery might be becoming depleted as it was doing last time and it will eventually (over the course of a few weeks) get to the point where the machine is unusable. Again. I have downloaded ...

Not a whole lot of any news today. Payed utilities. Why is it that ComEd's rig for online payment is so much more cumbersome than anything else that I pay for? For any of the other utilities, I just log in, select the same card, confirm, and it's done. Electric bill, oh no we can't do that. I have a payment put in but I'm not even sure if it went through. I might have to call customer service the next week. It's not due for a few weeks but I wanted to get it down since my garbage collection was ...

I didn't do my daily treadmilling yesterday. I had some stomach discomfort which wasn't enough to cause vomiting or anything serious but was distracting enough to convince me to lie down, which turned into a four hour nap that I didn't plan on or ask for. Upon starting today, I rounded up my coffee cup and noticed a layer of sludge on the bottom, which is rather disconcerting because I only make the coffee with some milk added, so that tells me that my source of pain might have been some finely ...

Before I make an official set of test return submissions to the IRS, I send in the scenarios individually so that when I'm ready to go, I have them all prepared to go in a single batch. This is required by the approval process, anyway, so that they know you have means to properly increment the return identification numbers and send several returns at once. Sure enough, between my initial tests and today, there was a new version of the XSD schema released and the prior 21st was the last day permitted ...

One thing I'm glad I figured out how to do in my tax form development is to go directly into the XML source content to edit things rather than use the normal system interface to change values. When you connect repeatable values from an XSD file to a form, the elements are marked as "[*]", meaning that they fill into a virtual table as they occur. This would be fine except that when you assign and copy groups of elements, the structure gets all kinds of altered and what might look like ...

  10. Arcade Appreciation April #12 - Time Crisis 4

by , 24 Apr 2012 at 03:29 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Time Crisis is one of the longest standing gun-game franchises around. Aside from the four main releases there have been a handful of spin-offs like Project Titan, Crisis Zone, and Razing Storm. The basic idea is the same amongst them all. Stop the terrorists, Jump in an out of cover to reload & dodge attacks, you're being timed. Not much else to it really, you get higher scores through accuracy, time, and doing a lot of combos(shooting many people multiple times in a short period).

New cartman had his first day today, but because the store has very strict rules about the all important computer training segments that people have to complete (among which are rules about sales of alcohol and tobacco, which will never apply to any of us), I didn't get a chance to work with him at all. The next day I'm scheduled is Saturday. I'm fearing that by the time I return, he'll have picked up bad habits or otherwise already be worn down to the point of uselessness. As it stands he's already ...

I've been informed that at least two cartmen who were ready to be hired by the store failed their drug tests. That explains a few things. I personally find the situation distasteful on both sides - I get that the company can set whatever hiring standards it wants, and that it wants to present a strong corporate image by having drug testing for even the lowliest of jobs. But the job in question is pushing carts for minimum wage. Unemployment pays better and the job is thankless, particularly with ...

  13. Arcade Appreciation April #11 - Caveman Ninja

by , 23 Apr 2012 at 12:33 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
This Data East action-platformer is...well you know what? Maybe I just shouldn't waste my time talking about it.

Caveman Ninja is...obsolete. It's one of those times where a company makes a game that is better than its predecessor in enough ways that gamers may as well forget the original ever happened. Why play Caveman Ninja when you can play...Spin Master? Yep that game with the two dudes from Dashin' Desperadoes. It's like Data East decided they wanted a replacement. They saw ...

Once upon a time at the retail store, they had two-way radios available for us lowly cartmen which were on the same wavelength as the radios which everyone else in the store uses, which was "good" in the sense that we were able to be paged by anyone and communication was easy. Over time, there came to be a dearth of functioning radios and it came to the point where we didn't have any to use at all. An attempt was made to use off-the-shelf walkies which are sold in the store, but that concept ...

  15. LB log - 20120420

With all the work I'm doing on translating kanji from Gal Gun, I'm wondering if I should just go full nuts on it and try to translate all of the text in the game. There's a finite number of lines to the game and it is much less than any RPG, so I guess I could get to it eventually? Eh, something to think about. Honestly, I shouldn't have lost this habit and kept replaying games which I had this whole time.

Regardless, I don't have a lot of time here before I have to tend to other ...
