New blood has joined the store. He was allowed to come outside and join me and the other cartman scheduled during the day for a few hours, because the training system didn't have his programs set in place which left him with nothing else to do. He's rather quiet, and after I took a moment to ask about his school situation, I am informed that he has recently acquired his GED and has taken the job at the store to help out with "family financial problems", and that he intends to rise through the ranks of management at the store. I wouldn't put his age as more than 25. Otherwise he said very little and at least seemed sharp enough to understand instruction (which is not to be taken for granted in this position). He was able to use the machine without any trouble as well. It all seems promising, but I wonder what's to be discovered about the man once he's familiar with us all and is more willing to speak.

Today's song run had a few instances of strange occurrences, namely the first three songs having EX scores off of record at 101, 100, and 101 again. Later on there was a play that was a single EX point from record, and the very next song was a rare record match. Otherwise, another good day and glad to clear Skyscraper and Last Burning once more.

I set some time to get a few submissions made today before my wife would get to bed, so that I would play songs later in the evening, as doing so seems to have worked well for my scores in the past few days.

I'm working through the errors as they come, and the next batch is easy enough to fix - as it turns out, there are several Schedules and attachments which need to be added to the consolidated return in addition to the original returns wherever they came up. So I fix them and make another submission. No errors.

This is bad.

The reason that this is bad is because there are errors which I was expecting to find after the first single return of the consolidated return was fully processed. Each return has a "documentCount" attribute in its element and the parser uses that to verify the number of documents intended to be read and compare that to what was actually processed. I know that the parser will give an error report with the anticipated number (on the basis of documents processed) if the documentCount element value is a mismatch. I had these values set to 1 in the secondary returns, as I didn't have a quick way to count them individually and figured that the error report would tell me the correct value eventually regardless. But this didn't happen. As far as I can tell, my content is matching the structure of the instance document given by the IRS, so I have little choice but to pour over the document more to ensure that everything I have is correct before I send a mail off to ask for guidance. Otherwise, it looks like the parser is processing only the first consolidated return and skipping the rest. I suppose at least one issue won't be the question of if I'm using my own XML parser, as I would still have this question even if I did have one (as it would seem to return no errors, as it does now). Oh well.

It took a bit of time to get into a good groove with today's session, but a small streak of tiny increments towards the end was very nice to encounter.

Waking up and immediately getting on the treadmill felt good for a change of pace. I need to make sure I do it this way every time in the future, without variance or fail. By doing the exercise at this time, you spend half of it in a groggy haze but can still march along and get the time under the belt immediately. It makes the rest of the session and day more structured. Yep, no breakfast, no sitting here to check anything, just get up and go.

I entered the office for the interview ten minutes early, and was prompted to sit and fill out a form while I waited for the appointed time. Little did I know that the form was actually a two page document which was a basic job application form. I failed to understand why I needed to do this while I had my resume in their hands, and I didn't appreciate having to fill that out on the spot as I had no forewarning that I'd need to do so. Had I known that doing this would have been required, I would have arrived twenty minutes earlier and with some supporting documents so that I could give the information more readily - or even better, that I could have printed the document out here at home and have it filled out and with me upon my arrival. It's just as well that I did the busywork anyway, as they weren't ready for me until twenty past the hour. I think the interview went as well as it could have. I didn't get any wild brain-bending logic puzzle questions, just the standard "explain a stressful situation you were in" type thing, and I responded at the end with a few questions to expound upon their job demands, which I think helps to show that I'm concerned about how I can best perform the tasks that the job entails.

The 1120 consolidated return test submission is going better than I expected. I have taken an original error count of 25 down to nothing and now just have to correct the other set of errors which are reported once the initial batch are addressed. If I don't have a successful submission tonight, I think it's possible that I will have one made sometime in the weekend.

Song session was excellent today. Shame that I couldn't record Alien Temple, but otherwise everything felt great. Quick Silver is still a whore, though, so it's just as well for it to have shown up at that time when I would have been needing to be done with the run anyway.

Working on this consolidated 1120 return is proving to be every bit of hellish that I figured it would be.

I didn't create the XML content for most of the free form attachments until today, and all told I have 103 documents to sort out amongst four returns (composite, parent, and two subsidiaries).

The interview coming at 10AM tomorrow means that I should wake up at 8AM to give myself enough time to prepare and travel.

I didn't even get to exercising today, as I woke up and cut the grass before doing today's grilling for dinner. Songs and tax work here has been the rest of the day so far. I suppose I should get the exercise in now and not worry about trying to get a submission made today. I'll have all of tomorrow to work on it.

Nothing terribly exciting happened in today's session. Rather tired of the Japanese version of No Crime coming up so frequently.

The 1120F test submission was made successfully today. That leaves the consolidated return left.

The response came from my mother's coworker with the job opening, and I am to have an interview at 10AM on Thursday. I'll wear my suit and hope for the best.

Having Arby's for lunch today was a pretty welcome change of pace.

There's not much else to report at the moment, as I slept for fourteen hours today.

Today's warmup song was terrible but the rest felt pretty good. I like times like this where I can have a horrible play with something and just shrug and move on to the next.

Words have resulted in action today. I have eliminated and removed all that I can do with Diablo 3. All items are given away, all characters are deleted, all friends are removed, and the game is uninstalled. It is done. As I expected, it wasn't easy to do with a few people lamenting my leaving and pleading with me to not quit as I was online and conducting the removal, and they assured me that I didn't have to take such drastic measures in response to a mere mistake. In one way, they're right. But I've explained my stance and rationale in prior days. This is what had to be done. The yoke is off of my shoulders now.

A coworker contact whom my mother has spoken with since she left was originally set to interview me for a position of some kind at a bakery in a nearby suburb. The original time in which the discussion about this happened was November of last year. The response to set a time for an interview was received today. I wonder when the actual interview itself will occur. My mother called me a few hours ago to confirm that I received the response, and after I had affirmed as much, she let out a gigantic sigh of relief and said "I'm going to have a drink tonight for this, thank God!", as if the potential to have an interview occur is something worth celebrating.

My instincts were correct in the arrangement of attachments of the Form 1120F test submission. I'm glat that there wasn't a maintenance period in the middle of the night yesterday. I should be able to make the remaining error corrections in short order and march on to the final test.

Today's song session was very good. To have the worst play come at -5.17% from the record with Snow Storm is a claim that I haven't been able to make in many days, at least from what I can instantly recall. I also don't recall ever passing Still My Words until today, but I didn't bother to check the log file to verify.

Form 1120 testing. I'm working on the 1120F set now, and one thing which I failed to account for or remember is that the list of attached forms as they appear in the initial includes listing of the XSD file is not presented in the same order as the parser expects the files. The acknowledgements finally came in yesterday and my initial submission had a total of 41 errors, but a majority of those were cases where the valid entries were "0" or "1" (as a boolean data type) rather than the "yes" or "no" data which was given because that's the default output for checkboxes when the PDFs are made. Correcting those issues brought the error count down to a much more manageable 11, but now I have to recreate the order listing. It's not that difficult, as it's just a matter of making a copy of the XSD and editing it out until what files are in the submission are left, and manually sorting from there.

In retail work, there were many calloffs and customer traffic was low, which is about the same as what I remember from working there on Mother's Day last year.

For as distraught as I became yesterday, I didn't have any impediment in going about work and usual routines today. Shrug and keep moving.

Today's song run was actually pretty good. Four record entries are the highlight. I played UN again since I just had that baseline set a few days ago, so I wanted to see how much I would deviate today. I guess I'll try doing so one more time on the assumption that I'll have a decline from the record on the next play and see how much off the mark it is. ソウキュウ*スカイスクレイパー is still really nice.

Lunar Beat. Extra Mode. Double play. "@" denotes Random chart modifier. All songs are of highest difficulty type unless specified.

I paid a visit to my parent's place today so that I could take care of any kind of Mother's Day quota today rather than wait for tomorrow. When I arrived, she was away at a nearby friend's place and said she'd return promptly. I remembered that I wanted to find an old picture of my Grandmother and went about looking around the place for it. I can't find it anywhere I look by the time she gets back. She finds me looking in one of the closets, which causes her to take a small inventory of a few things while we're standing there. She opens a box and there's a few watches inside, and some old coins. There's also some old tie pins. She shuffles them around and I notice one of them had a few letters on it. I pick it up and read the letters: TALMAN.

"The bank?" I ask. Talman Home Bank was a Chicago staple, at least on the south side. I think it's owned by LaSalle or someone else devoured it.

"Yeah. It was your great Grandfather's. He was on the Board of Directors."

I don't recall ever hearing this before at all.

Long story short, the news amplifies my feeling of personal inadequacy to the point that I'm basically dulled now. I returned to my home in silence. I guess if blame is to be ascribed, there's a year of daily posts before this one where something could be formulated and projected to years further in the past. But that doesn't change or help anything.

In spite of this I still dutifully played a few songs today. I had a new record with Four Leaf but failed the chart. Most everything else was normal otherwise.

Lunar Beat. Extra Mode. Double play. "@" denotes Random chart modifier. All songs are of highest difficulty type unless specified.

In case you haven't heard, an item of news going around lately is that Penny Arcade is using Kickstarter to fund some podcasts. A few wrinkles about this as to why this is news worthy: a) Mike and Jerry already can fund this with their own capital, b) the goal was set at $10, which ensures that all pledges are received and eliminates any kind of risk, and c) the $10 goal also implies that they would have created the podcasts regardless. My single word gut reaction to this all is "why?", or at least "why use Kickstarter to do this?". You want to make a thing, things aren't free, you want to see how much of a market there potentially is as well. All fine so far. But it seems pretty apparent to me that the industry which these two currently have gives them ample framework to do so without utilizing Kickstarter at all. I see most of the arguments both for and against this meandering down wildly divergent paths, both for justification and for scorn. What I find being quickly lost amongst all of this is that there's nothing about this project which Kickstarter particularly helps them do as opposed to doing the project without Kickstarter. Or maybe to put it as my wife did when I brought this up to her:

[19'41"19] <Lenneth> save the KSs for people who actually need them jfc

But then we debate "who actually needs them". And then debate "leaving money on the table". &c.

Between this and cat grooming (fluffy cat has several knots which I need a razor and patience to remove), I haven't left myself much time to do any work today. Eh. I'll get there.

Songs started rather rough today but shaped up nicely. I knew that I hit Darling My Luv rather well in the course of playing it but I wasn't expecting an increase of 5%. I never had a record for that UN song because it's so bad, but upon replaying it now I come to realize that it at least can be played in normal sessions as it doesn't have hold notes, so I guess I'll make a point to play it a bit more frequently now (but not by much).

With the Tax Code page up and refreshed, I figure that the next thing that I need to resume doing is my work on the Form 1120 family MEF development.

I had this dropped basically right as I was getting it all figured out. I was able to get the first test submission compiled and successfully sent with a handful of attempts. It's good to be right back into the swing of it. I guess that it's not too much of a huge stretch for me to resume the work after having just finished the last individual return a mere few weeks ago, but I have felt my heels dragging on this at the start of the day and thankfully I have had this much good fortune so far. From the looks of things, that means that I have four of the seven main test submissions complete. The only issues going forward will be the consolidated return and the return which has the Form 851 information in it.

Nothing very remarkable happened with today's song session, but at least I wasn't too far from records on any play. Glad that I didn't fail out on War Game at least.

The update to include Public Law 112-240 is done.

I used some lines of regular expression scripts that I had mentioned here months ago to streamline the conversion process between the working text file and the finished HTML documents, so getting that part over with was as simple as two double clicks. Running a full spell check on the document took a much longer time. The spell check insisted on the word being "tradeable", but once I found an instance of the word as "tradable" in the actual tax code, I reverted the correction. Every letter counts when you only have eighty to work with.

After the fiasco with the latest D3 patch, I'm tempted to log in again just to see how the AH prices are now and the reactions amongst the players on my list who are still on it now, but I've been strong enough to avoid it to this point so I should keep with the abstinence and refrain. One day passes into the next, as before, and one week will become two and then four and then it will all become a memory that grows more distant.

Songs went pretty well today. Biggest trouble was the four heavy charts at open, and then things became rather easy after that. Looking at the playcount for 1989 confirms that this was indeed the second time that I have ever played the chart. Good thing I got the record with the Full Combo.

Lunar Beat. Extra Mode. Double play. "@" denotes Random chart modifier. All songs are of highest difficulty type unless specified.

The lawn needed mowing again, just one week since the last time. The yield of cut grass was at least the same as it was last week, if not a touch more. Yes, it is late spring, but I'm still a bit surprised that the growth rate has been so quick.

In doing the updates I've come to find that I basically needed to scan each line of §42 to ensure that I had all the content. It actually lost a few items which might make it have less quantity than §401 or some other extremely long sections. I found this piece of code that I had to write and add rather amusing:

---Quote---
(9) Clarification of general public use requirement
A project does not fail to meet the general public use requirement solely because of occupancy restrictions or preferences that favor tenants—
(A) with special needs,
(B) who are members of a specified group under a Federal program or State program or policy that supports housing for such a specified group, or
(C) who are involved in artistic or literary activities.
---End Quote---
Including a few lines in the depreciation sections about artistic work, and definitions of collectibles, I think this is one of the only other areas in the entirety of the tax code in which people with artistic careers are given any kind of consideration. That they have a special exclusion of this kind in respect of the Low Income Housing credit does strike me as rather odd.

Songs were pretty bad today. I had high hopes of doing OK with starting rather well with Airflow, but it proved to not be the case. In my defense, I did encounter very heavy charts for the first half of the session at least.

Allergies are hitting me hard today.

Working on §42 of the tax code work, and I'm encountering some updates which I magically neglected from years ago which I'm not sure need to be retained now or altered on the basis of what's show on the Cornell site. I guess the next step is to go directly to the GPO site which has the .txt content and see how they compare. I'm willing to bet that the Cornell content is current, as it has been with the other updates so far, but considering how frequently I update my site (very rarely), I want to ensure that I get it totally right at the present moment.

Retail work was rather easy and I had time at the beginning and end of the day to clean out clogged cart wheels. I think I recovered six carts in total.

Allergies hit me hard late in the day so I think I'll blame that to an extent for today's mostly poor run, though in honesty it balanced out to a relative normal in time. I don't think I played D2R since I set the record.

I'd like to take the opportunity today to mention the latest aired Doctor Who episode, entitled "The Crimson Horror". The wife and I watched it today.

We generally immediately agreed that it was terrible. The more you think about any particular scene or moment, the less it makes any kind of sense. The gigantic victorian loudspeakers that blared noise was used for ... what? The victims needed to be dipped into the vat of poison using gigantic cage structures because ... why? Some survivors are kept in gigantic glass diorama set pieces because ... why? Was the big plan that the ladies conducted towards the end anything more than "steal the gigantic flask of poison"? Did they have to visibly appear at the other side of the stairwell after the rocket came out? The woman disrobes to a catsuit, disposes of two dopes immediately, and all politely stand there for a moment until they decide to run away regardless? Since when are pictures of The Doctor readily found on the Internet within their storyline? Wasn't he previously portrayed as shadowy and elusive and unseen? What is all of this? What? So that was the word we repeated several times - "What?".

To assure that I had the title correct, I ran a search and the first result that came was this review of the episode at IGN: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/05/05/doctor-who-the-crimson-horror-review . I shouldn't be surprised, but I am amazed that this is what passes for journalistic criticism on a major media outlet.

Today's song session features the lowest grade I likely have ever earned with playing All Right and getting a clear. Nothing worthwhile to mention otherwise.

Back to work on the OneLine Tax Code, and I have encountered a wonderful block of legislation for me to parse.

Public Law 112-240 is the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012. http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-112publ240/pdf/PLAW-112publ240.pdf . I've just scraped the top of this iceberg and already have come to see new rules regarding exclusion of beneficiary income given to certain people that is used to pay insurance premiums, as well as the very longly demanded adjustment for inflation to the alternative minimum tax. I still have many more items to go through. I doubt that I'll have this wrapped up by the end of tomorrow's time and will have to cut into the course of the week to finish it up.

One thing that's interesting is that Cornell University's code pages (such as http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/26/23) have the adjustments made under this PL all included in their preliminary page, yet their headers (at least, the ones that I've encountered so far) indicate that their version is current as of PL 112-143. I suppose it'd add another magnitude of busywork if they wanted to maintain separate headers to state how current the page is. Either way, I'm definitely glad to see these pages have the adjustments, as it gives me assurance that I'm reading the original text correctly and can make proper adjustments and entries to my page.

Somehow, I ended up playing the first two songs today with S Random modifier, which means that the turntable is a valid lane for randomization purposes. This makes the charts more unstable than ever. The third song to come up was Moon Child, and it was only until that chart's opening scratches came on keys when I realized that something was wrong. If I remember right, back when I was playing LR2 and did nonstop expert courses, I had the song Addiction come up many times. I'm just glad it wasn't the EX. Five minutes and five thousand notes. Pain.

Today is the wake up call.

I received a letter in the IRS that my refund has been adjusted - in the positive direction. I made a mistake on my own return. It was a minor error, and it didn't result in me owing an additional amount, but it was still an error on my own return. An error that I should have easily noticed and avoided.

In my capacity as an Enrolled Agent, it is unacceptable for that to have happened.

So it's time to re-evaluate my life.

The amount that I've complained and spoken on here about the time that I've spent playing games like Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 is far less than the amount of time that I've spent from last May until now in reading about details, engaging in discussion about the games elsewhere, and actually in fact playing said games. What has become increasingly clear over time and crystallized today is that I cannot balance the amount of time which I have put into that kind of activity with doing things such as furthering my career, either as an Enrolled Agent or being hired in some capacity at a level which is beyond retail labor.

I have made friends. I have proven that I can play these kinds of games well. I have seen the content that they offer. I have shown myself to be a worthwhile player and cooperative ally to other players in these games.

But I cannot allow this kind of incident to happen in my life again.

In knowing this and how my mind works, as well as how people who I play these kinds of games with pace their own play time, I have no other choice but to completely terminate my current play of those aforementioned games. Even if I were to reduce the time to one day of the week, I would still let my mind linger on questions about mechanics and possibilities, which would lead me to conduct research on web pages, which would lead me to reading comments, which would suck me right back into this abyssmal pit where I declare myself to be in right now.

So the question now is if I can in fact make that clean cut. The choice is spelled out by me and in front of my eyes here.

...

How does this all differ from my daily song routine here? These sessions, and the scores that I get, are a direct and total result of my interaction with the game itself and alone. There's really no thing I can do here which is something that I can read about on a FAQ, nothing that I can grind against a random number generator with the hopes to achieve, nothing which relies upon other players for me to have a purpose in playing it. I play these songs to the best of my ability, I get these results, the end. There's no debate about how to play a song (beyond not sucking at it), there's no discussion of future patches or what-ifs. The songs are there to be played and earn results.

And on that note, today's results basically suck. But oh well. It's one day, it's done, and I move on from it to tomorrow.

I received a call at about 1130AM today, and it was from the woman who came to pick up her repaired PC from here yesterday.

"I can't find my resume on my computer."
"Let me walk you to the directory, I know it's there because I made a point to look and ensure that it was there. Click on the C: drive."
"... oh, OK, I think I'll find it ok now, thanks."

Five minutes later, she calls back.

"What's the administrator password?" As stated previously, I made a new administrator account which she couldn't access so that she couldn't wreak havoc on her machine again.
"Why do you need the password?"
"I'm trying to go to Microsoft."
"Microsoft what?"
"Microsoft Office Word or whatever."
"OK... why does it say it needs the password?"
"Uh it says that uh I can only edit the document I think or-"
"OK, I want you to close and re-open the document and then tell me what it says when it asks you for the admin password."
"OK... oh, it's not asking for it now. Weird."
"OK, glad you can open it, good bye."

I assume that she's bothered by the fact that there is an administrator account on her own computer and I am preventing her from accessing it, but I don't see another way to allow her to use the machine safely.

Today's song selection is dramatically easier than what I had served yesterday. Glad to finally clear 地平線のその向こう側, as I think I had failed it with the last few measures every other time it has come up. I felt pretty strong in hitting the quick right hand scratch hops on The Detonator, so I was gratified to see that increase. A year and a day since the last record, too. How quaint.

I was up against the midnight tick for yesterday's entry, so I didn't get to write the one sentence summary for how I felt about the song session.

In reference to that writing, I had more to do with that woman's computer today. I recall a pop up that had come on before saying that Flash needed an update (coming from a pop up of a third party site), so I got it loaded and installed. Then there were some Windows Update patches that weren't installed yet, so the installation and reboot came. To ensure that it was all working OK, I load up the administrator profile and load up IE. It crashes instantly. Hm. I load up one of the non-admit accounts and try again. Same result. It's entirely possible that the reason for this is that I cut too much content from Registry in relation to some spam software that she had installed, but I won't know for sure. Thankfully, Chrome was installed on there, so I was able to consult some pages on how to repair IE. I used the Microsoft FixIt program, and while it didn't prevent IE from loading without crashing, a link that was available in the program was able to load a page in IE without error. I was able to restore initial settings from there.

So about the songs. I got hit with a lot of dense charts today, and both Sana Molette Ne Ente and its remix, so that's two trends. Happy to have Endless Summer Story come up today; with the weather at present, it seemed rather appropriate. I have no answer for Least 100 Sec. in EX mode.

Something which I don't take for granted is a lawnmower starting, so today's first use for the new year was a definite relief as I was able to get it to start on the very first attempt. Fill, pull, and off it went. Beautiful.

If you recall the woman who was my wife's coworker, in that she was fired yesterday. Concurrently, she had asked me last week if I could help her with her PC. She has recruited my help before, and I was able to recover her content after she had fallen victim to one of those anti-virus trojans which add the hidden attribute to each file in the hard drive. The issue which she mentioned this time is that the "internet keeps crashing". Despite the circumstances, the machine was dropped off yesterday, and I was able to look at it today. Upon bootup, I was immediately greeted with five popups for various utility programs. After a few minutes, Internet Explorer was indeed in a perpetual crash loop. Chrome revealed three toolbars installed. As I had done before, I went to uninstall all the garbage she had put in, and one of the first which I removed was some kind of full program which imported Chrome toolbars into IE. The crash loop stopped immediately.

One of my wife's coworkers was fired today.

My wife's job entails money accounting and is done in full nine hour shifts in a room that is maybe seventy square feet, if not less. The room is tucked away within the building and the single door must be closed as much as possible. When you're cooped up with people in there on a full time basis, little things can become aggravated over time. The coworker had two counts ready to be held against her, one for her handling of an issue and how she reported it to management (which turned out to be false), and another for attendance, so they set the final discussion up to see how she would react to the former count, and then hold her accountable for the latter if all else failed. The latter case didn't need to be invoked.

In knowing her personally and her life's situation, I don't particularly revel in knowing that she is now without the job and will likely find it very difficult to find another one, at least soon. But I am much more relieved that it has finally come to this point, because my wife was clearly and definitely suffering and exasperated with the job whenever they worked together. In general, this woman was much more consistent in failing to conduct her basic duties than she was in doing her expected job.

Songs. I really like Turii Panta Rhei, and I hope that LB doesn't decide to constantly spam the song on random choice now. I'll play it today after doing so yesterday, game, but please don't make me skip playing it when it comes up next time. The three song set of Advance, Reminiscence, and Mermaid Girl would likely completely alienate about 99% of an impartial audience away from this game. Session was good overall.
