  1. I finally decided to talk about Dragon Age: Origins

by , 10 Jun 2012 at 11:27 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
I won't bore you guys with my opinion of Bioware today. Instead I'll bore you with my opinion of Bioware's last good game, Dragon Age: Origins.
It's been awhile since I've played this game and I've already forgotten a lot about it. Forgive me if I miss some of the finer details.

You are a dwarven/elven/human man or a woman who up until now had a noble/peasant/awesome/lame upbringing. Well that all changed when some clown tricked you into becoming a Grey Warden. After a wild ...

  2. Dragon's Logma - Final(?) Volume

by , 05 Jun 2012 at 08:37 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
As much as I enjoy this game it's time I moved on. I'll likely head back to it when some significant DLC hits but until then I've got other games I need to play and write about.
So for the time being this will be the last update.

Before I go any further though. Has this E3 sucked or what? Yeah totally unrelated but man it's depressing. Some of the products being announced sound completely ridiculous like Microsoft's SmartGlass garbage and Sony's hopelessly useless Wonderbook. ...

  3. Dragon's Logma - Volume 7

by , 29 May 2012 at 08:19 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
    (WARNING! HUGE SPOILERS THIS UPDATE)

First off I've just beaten this game. Final time was about 57 hours and I know I skipped out on a bunch of quests. There's a New Game+ so I've already started on that but it'll be awhile before I can write the review. Doing the math I spent close to ten hours a day playing this game. Seriously, isn't that crazy? I can't remember if I've ever done that with a game before(or maybe I've just pushed it out of my memory). In short I really enjoyed the ...

The cockatrice is a serious pain. This is mainly because they specialize in petrification-breath. It's pretty easy to tell when they're about to blow because they swell up like the basilisks in Dark Souls. The pawns are usually good about getting out of the way but when they're not I end up lacking some help. Pawns have the ability to learn. Yes the main pawn can gain experience and improve their skills but this knowledge goes beyond that. The terrain, ...

Warriors have high power but mostly they're good for incapacitating enemies. Sending this clown into the air makes him good target practice for the archers and mages I'm teamed up with. The heavier attacks that ignore defense are always a plus as well.

What's interesting about some monsters is that they may be doing other things rather than waiting for you to fight them. This Griffin flies around the area looking for oxen to devour.

Grappling onto beasts is risky, especially if they're capable of flying. If you run out of stamina you'll let go of them and if they've high in the air you're going to die. Still it can be very satisfying and no ...

With Jennique's vocation being changed to Magick Archer I figured Gradriel was due for some change as well. Sword and board? More like Sword and Bored! Hohoho I'm a comedic genius! Anyway Gradriel is now a warrior and she just hits evil in the face with a very large hammer. Most of her skills now revolve around being able to shrug off damage to deliver mighty blows.

  9. Dragon's Logma - Volume 2

by , 23 May 2012 at 04:47 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
First off I should warn all readers that as this log progresses the spoilers will begin to pile up. If you're currently playing the game and don't want any surprises ruined I suggest that you may want to steer clear.

Lately I've been running into more and more of the greater beasts that inhabit the land of Gransys. These adversaries are where Dragon Dogma's combat really comes into its own. The fiends tend to have multiple weaknesses. ...

This is the first of hopefully many updates where I discuss the Capcom Action-RPG, Dragon's Dogma.

I decided to start off as a Strider, which is basically an Archer as well as a Rogue. Unfortunately my...errh...Jennique's armor looks like she's saving the land in her pajamas at the moment. Still that hardly matters when I can easily dispatch adversaries with my bow and never-depleting quiver of arrows. The crew I've assembled consists of ...

  11. Arcade Apprecation - Deathsmiles 1

by , 21 May 2012 at 02:40 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
I reviewed Deathsmiles 2 on the main-page so give it the once-over if you haven't already.

Now then...what can I say about the first game? Well it's not quite as creepy as the sequel. Also in terms of atmosphere and level-design it's a bit more cohesive, even if most of the stages feel almost Psikyo-length. I actually feel kinda bad that I threw this game in a forgotten corner for so long because it's better than I remember. It's probably Cave's most accessible shooter thanks to ...

  12. Arcade Appreciation #14 - Guwange

by , 19 May 2012 at 03:04 AM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Guwange is an arcade shooter by Cave so you probably have an idea of what to expect. There's some scoring system that's based around an easy to understand gimmick and tons of bullets. These aspects are held together by tight mechanics and heavily refined game-design. Not a single element is wasted so mastering this title calls upon your every ability. What's the most important aspect however? A good intro.

One thing shooter devs have a hard time figuring out is a good intro. There's ...

  13. Words words words about Driver: San Francisco.

by , 14 May 2012 at 11:05 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
Who cares about the Driver series? Sure it may have been relevant back in the Playstation 1 days and even past the first game that's up for debate. Flash forward some 200 years and Driver: SF hits. I in my infinite lack of wisdom pass this game up despite the shockingly good demo. I can't even remember what I was playing instead. Gears of War 3? Whatever. If anything I should have been talking this game up for the remainder of 2011. Not only does it run at a most excellent 60 frames per second it's ...

  14. Why not talk about Dark Souls? I've spent enough time with it.

by , 10 May 2012 at 10:57 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
First off I'm not a big fan of Demon's Souls. Why? All you need to know is that I didn't like it.
However with Dark Souls if I had played it last year I'd probably have considered it one of my favorites of 2011.

For quite awhile I was almost entirely immersed in this game. Not only would I be playing Dark Souls but I'd also be watching DS streams at the same time.

This title is a perfect example of "Making the game yours". This is a motto I came up ...

  15. Arcade Appreciation #13 - Deadstorm Pirates

by , 01 May 2012 at 04:29 PM (PepsimanVsJoe talks about random games.)
The gun game genre isn't just about blasting everybody that gets in your face, it's also about compatibility. When you play a gun game with a friend, stranger, or loved one, you're cooperating with a common goal in mind. Many of the more recent entries in the genre(especially a series like the "Let's Go!..." games by Sega) grade you AND your partner. How well you do is intimately tied to how well the both of you work together. This may also carry deeper meaning. Perhaps you're out on a ...
