Standing Still

Rate this Entry
I'm tired of not going anywhere. I realized a few months ago I'm at a complete standstill in life. I've had little opportunity to move to anything else. With more seasoned pros competing for jobs suited for people my age, it's harder to find something to move to in my field. And it's aggravating.

I don't know how people can sit still in one place long enough and be content. It's impossible for me to remain happy in the same situation. At first I thought there was something wrong with me but then I noticed I just rule. I rule so much I can't stand in one spot too long or the ruling will destroy that place from existence.

Entropy rules.

There's nothing wrong with you. I've changed job roles seven times since I moved down here in 2000, including four promotions. And I still have had periods where I felt like grass was growing under my ass. Settling for "good enough" is un-American.

So you're like, the Mexican Chuck Norris?

Its not your job, its your penis size.

I think it's perfectly normal. I've had nearly every kind of job/rate of pay you can imagine, but- usually through no fault of its own- stick to nothing for more than a few years. Even the best jobs have had me reach the point where I'd rather stick my head in the oven than go back.

I'm at 2 years as a bike courier, and this is the first time I've ever not been ready to do something else by this point. I think the fact that I'm not chained to the same physical location every day, all day has something to do with it.

I think it is natural. I think about this sort of thing a lot too. I often feel like I am setting still because I'm pulled in so many directions

Now we know buttplant really meant to say "Big Gay in a Small Pond" in his last blog entry.

I never knew there were so many roles in the janitorial field.

Being content is the best. Moving sucks. A change of scenery for the sake of itself is meh to me, only useful if there's something to actively escape from.

    But hey, that's just me.

    Come out to Denver Razor.

But yes, the standing still feeling sucks, and it's why I decided to up and move to Denver. Right now I'm in a job that's not my field, and honestly there's room for advancement, but right now I am doing a different thing most days because my role fills a bunch of different roles, I'm probably 10 times happier with my job. That and Cleveland is just shit anyways.

But I guess I'm feeling shitty in the fact I'm not doing programming which I really do enjoy. Blah now I'm depressed.

    What a fucking loser.

Ramon, you suffer from the affliction known as ambition. As Ben Franklin said: "Ambition has its disappointments to sour us, but never the good fortune to satisfy us. Its appetite grows keener by indulgence and all we can gratify it with at present serves but the more to inflame its insatiable desires."

Fuck off. I have no problem with moving when you're in a situation with no way to move up. I do have a problem with people that are always moving for the sake of moving because they think a new city is somehow going to make them not suck at life.

You know, this isn't at all about moving physically to another city.

I know, just clarifying my statement that somehow painted me as "a fucking loser" with no ambition.

So what are you doing to rectify this situation?

Mothers. Many of them. Yours is in the batch.

Razor, you'll find a way to channel that energy but many times the frustration can come from a lack of clear goal setting. Often times it is easier to set goals and work backwards from them. That way you can gauge your progress, if you need to make any adjustments, determine where you want to be after 2 years, 5 years, in order to reach your targets so that achieving those goals doesn't feel overwhelming. Regardless, you'll figure it out, it takes time.

Ahhh, I see. Yes, I agree, you would suck at life regardless of the city you live in. Hell, you could live in them all, give it a shot, things would still suck for you.

Education, man. Keep getting those qualifications in your spare time. Don't listen to the usual bs about how experience means more, the young up & comer with better and more up to date qualifications than they have is the exact person all those "seasoned pros" are terrified of.
