LB log - 2015 Week 26

It's halftime.
I have had the same trailer attached to the truck I use at work this entire week. This is extraordinary in that the usual process is that you drop and detach the trailer at the hub dock at the end of the day, and park your untethered tractor elsewhere on the facility. It's a small facility and space is at a premium in the dock door area, so it's rare to see any tractors parked back there. The reason that my truck has stayed attached is mainly because of what happened on the first day of the work week. I roll out and just as I'm hitting the nearby expressway, a passenger yells out to me that my landing gear is down - these are the two legs which support the trailer on its own. I happened to have a companion with me that day and neither he nor I heard or felt any unusual scraping or resistance from the road until we got to that point, so it seemed reasonable to assume that a bump on the road to that point is what caused it to fall out. Also, it was only one leg which fell, and it was the passenger side, so despite my cranking the gear up as normal, I didn't see anything unusual before leaving. Regardless, after calling maintenance and confirming that the trailer was reported as having its gear stripped and shouldn't have been eligible for use, we make arrangements to turn around and get an emergency quick fix at the nearby truck rental facility. An hour passes and their solution is to chain the fallen leg upright to the frame, which means that I wouldn't be able to drop it as normal when I was done. I finish the day, leave, and come back to find my truck still attached the next day. On this night, it happens to be raining as I'm on the Interstate for a stretch of road which has no lights overhead; I run over something and it makes the tractor bounce harder than usual with a different kind of noise. I reach the next destination and as I pull backwards to enter the facility I see a wad of shredded rubber on the pavement. I complete the back in and immediately jump out to confirm that the shredded tire wasn't formerly mine. I also notice that whatever I did run over managed to snag onto the power cable which runs from the tractor to the outlet for the liftgate on the trailer. The plate and socket was completely bent out of the frame and unusable, and the power cord itself was wrapped into a bolt coupling on the DEF tank nearby which resulted in the bolt puncturing a hole cleanly through the cable. I now had no liftgate power supply, and I had a few pieces left on the trailer which required the gate to be used. The gate can operate on stored battery power for a few cycles without being connected, so I do this through the remainder of the day. I call maintenance and inform them that they hadn't disconnected the trailer yet, and mentioned this new problem. That was three days ago, and the trailer has remained on my tractor for the remainder of the week, until and including today. I had a large drive shaft of some kind to deliver, as well as an engine to another location, and I left both at the dock because I had no way to safely get them to the ground upon arrival. Between this, the long days, and the continued (albeit rare) instances where customers still complain about my performance compared to previous drivers, I'm about at wits end with this job. I'm not in a crisis mode yet, though. The field is competitive, I have earned my stripes here, and that was the basic intent of me signing on with them immediately regardless. Now that I have the experience and an established pay rate, I can use both of those factors to let me have some kind of freedom in choosing where I may go next, and what I am paid to do so. In order to do all of this properly, however, I will need to get the rest of my CDL certifications.
I use an air mattress to sleep on the futon in the basement bedroom during weekdays, and in this week it developed an air leak problem which I didn't want to deal with anymore, so we purchased a new mattress. It is more than twice the height of the old mattress, and might possibly be firmer when fully inflated. I approve.
It turns out that song sessions were overall really good this week, and I have no idea what make my playing so much better in this period than previous weeks. Thursday's streak of increases was amazing. Maybe my key to continuing having days like this is to never play IIDX in the arcade anymore.
