By Tuesday evening at about 8PM or so, I had done everything in the day I wanted to do. Exercised for a while, got caught up on the Japanese flashcard study queue, played some songs, all the things which I look to do on a normal day. With everything done, I looked around in the main room and became immobile over the realization that I was basically free to do anything I could want to do at that point and yet I couldn't think of anything which felt particularly desirable to do. Writing? No, that would take too long, I don't feel very focused. Read? Read what, there's a few books I was partially through but I simply had no motivation to pick any of them back up at that point. Play a game? Which game? Why? Why bother? The downward spiral descent was pretty rapid and I had no good answer on what to do other than go to bed at that point. Waking up to look out onto the lawn and see rain falling didn't inspire me to be happier. After a while of remaining in that mindset, though, I just talked about these feelings out loud with my wife, and made mention of a notion which I had heard many times earlier on a radio show - the act of being happy generally makes people feel happy, even if they are not. Now, I didn't take that to mean that I should become some kind of psychotic fake kind of clown and raise my voice up an octave to maximize the effect. I just needed to focus on the positives at that point and move on. I think I managed to do so. What this all demonstrates to me is how important it is for me to be employed. Being a wage slave is not a particularly noble aspiration today, but I came to find that I think I prefer it to sitting at home and not having any particular motivation to do anything. Maybe in some distant future day, I can actually earn sufficient money in do something which I find to be as intellectually stimulating and personally interesting, but in the meantime I dare say having any job is better for my well being than not having one.

In light of this, I was relieved to see my driver's license finally arrive in the mail today.

Song sessions were pretty good this week. That play of Prince on a Star was a rude awakening, but I strongly dislike the song anyway so I don't feel particularly bad for having played it so poorly. Anyway, having little stress on the mind is probably a large contributor to the good results. My last arcade visit did not go very well at all, which I might have predisposed myself into doing in light of how well I had played the week before. Perhaps now that I can start to get going on the rest of my life from this exact moment, I will play better there too.
