A Lions Tale: Being a fan of a horrible franchise

Rate this Entry
After another loss of a game that slipped away from the grasp of the win column, I thought why am I still passionate about a team that hasn't been relevant since before the NFC Central became the NFC North, which is over ten years. I originally became a fan because my father is from Michigan and after seeing some highlights of Barry Sanders early in his career, I immediately thought the guy was awesome.

It all started to fall apart after the Wayne Fontes years, what happened after that was years of mediocre coaches and quarterbacks that couldn't help the Hall of Fame RB get anywhere in his career. Scott Mitchell, Charlie Batch, Mike McMahon, Joey Harrington, Jeff Garcia, Jon Kitna, Dante Culpepper. None of those names scream All Pro QB, probably the Lions biggest weakness over the decades.

Whats worse, being a fan of a team that you have to little to no expectations or being a fan of a team such as the Eagles? A team that went to 4 straight NFC championships and to lose every single one and on the 5th they finally win but only to lose in the Superbowl. Or how about being a Bills fan in the 90s? An unheard 4 straight Super Bowl appearances where they were bested each year.

I continue to watch every week, fully expecting a loss but still hold a glimmer of hope that somehow the Lions will win. I guess now I know what it's like to be a Chicago Cubs fan.

I've been a Jets fan for years, and one of the early years of that they went 1-15. I figured it would never get any worse, so I stuck with them. Now, it's paying off. Stick with your team!

Life long Browns fan here. There is no such thing as "paying off."

At least you guys never had your team taken away for a few years.

I don't think I have the quote right but Artie Lange does a bit asking whats the difference between a woman and the New York Jets? The Jets will always fuck you.

Lions have always been my favorite NFC team, even more so after ex-Titans coordinator Jim Schwartz took over as head coach.

They just always seem to be a play away from victory.

the lions are onto something. they're clearly better than their record and that division will probably open up by next year. i don't think the bears and vikings have the pieces to contend long term.

I'm a bit saddened by that statement Wasabi. I thought we were buds. I wouldn't wish Andy Reid onto my worst enemies football team. He's a coach that will never take your team over the top. He will get you up the mountain, just not over the top.

He'll get you to the top alright. He'll just kick you down the other side of it though.
