Sonic the Hedgehog 2006

Rate this Entry
I picked up the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog on clearance for the Xbox 360 yesterday. This is the same Sonic game that was pretty much slammed by everyone as being one of the worse games ever made and for having realistic-princess on cartoon-hedgehog action.

Having just played Sonic Adventure on XBLA and still really digging it (faults and all), I couldn't imagine that this game was as horrible as I had heard before. A bit strange? Maybe. Funky art style? Sure. But godawful as people have claimed? Nah. That can't be true.
Or can it?

I'll let me tweets paint my reaction.

Yep, I'm doing it.
I'm convinced that no one ever play tested 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog at @Sega. Sonic's (1st?) fight with Silver shouldn't be so f'ing hard.
I am seriously dumbfounded how stupidly unbalanced this Silver fight is. It's like a child trying to fight Darth Vader 1 on 1.
The loading in 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog can not be described with mere words, so I've made a shaky-cam video.
I'm amazed that this is possible, but 2006 Sonic is worse than Sonic Heroes. Hands down. Bravo, @Sega.
Whoever came up with the idea to give Sonic enemies (not bosses) health bars should have a serious talking to. It's horrible every time.
Got a game over on a painful-to-control snowboard stage. Game dumps me back to the title screen. Last save was before 3 mandatory hub tasks. I'm done. Congrats, @Sega. First Sonic game I've quit on because of how poorly it's designed. I know I'm 4 years late to the party, but I fully understand why this game has such a bad rep.
A friend of mine wants me to try and finish it off, but I don't know if I have it in me. Maybe if I can get a group of friends together to pass the controller around and yell at the TV together. I am just dumbfounded by how poor of quality Sega would allow for one of their bread and butter franchises.

If there is any glimmer of sunshine, it's that the Sonic games that came after this were of better quality, although going from shitty to less shitty is not much to brag about.

Haha - I know he does. Final score of 8.5... I wish I could find the full review because I'd love to know his reasoning.

I remember the demo level for this being really fucking fun and this looking so promising.

Now four years after it came out I've realized that not only did I miss that it was released but I completely forgot it existed. Those are not good signs!

I remember the demo level being pretty fun, although a little glitchy. It's just amazing that in the final game about 80% of your time is spent in the shitty hub world. It's almost like the levels are only there to further progress your hub-world adventures. Simply ass-backwards.

I saw this on clearance at Target and was going to check next week if the price went down any lower. Might just forget that idea after reading this...

Smart move. If I could go back in time and smack it out of my hands, I would. The trade in value of $3.25 that Amazon is offering sounds like a fantastic offer.

I'll give it to you when you come down for Christmas (Are you coming down for Christmas?).

I'm actually thinking about trying to play this some more today, see if I can get past the shitty snowboarding section.

I can't believe how bad this game is.

I actually liked what they were trying to do with this game, but it seriously needed like another 9 months in development. At least. But I liked the general design, return to Sonic Adventure style, but with three characters that were all action based and a good style fit for the game. It really could have been something, but it released it what can only be described as early beta state.

Had they cleaned up the loading time horseshit, fixed the collision/targeting glitches, polished the level design up, etc, it could have been a solid return to the Sonic Adventure days.

I agree on some of your points, Frog. I, too, actually like the weird realistic humans/Eggman look for Sonic and some of the levels do have moments of greatness, but, even though Sonic, Silver, and Shadow take the spot light, you do have sections, and sometimes complete levels, where you have to use a secondary character like Tails or Knuckles (and what I've seen in the manual, Rogue, Blaze, Amy Rose, and one of those E-Series robots) and, at least with Tails and Knuckles, they feel extremely half-finished characters (Tails throws a fake ring box as a weapon? Really? Knuckles' animation for climbing up a wall looks like shit. It's really amazing).
