Old PSMs, Game Informer....from 1997!

Rate this Entry
I love going to thrift stores, which takes up a lot of my weekends. I love shopping in general, but shopping at thrift stores always yields the strangest finds. This last weekend, I found a huge lot of old video game magazines. That's not too rare in itself, usually you can find a few GamePros and things like that sitting around. This lot was strange though, the PSM magazines went back to issue #1, from 1997. I sat in the thrift store for about 45 minutes, looking through all these old issues, old memories. In 1997, I was in about 7th or 8th grade, and that's when my passion for games really took off. Like a lot of kids my age, Final Fantasy 7 was the game the really cemented my love of J-RPGs and general weeabooness. It's hilarious looking back at these magazine from 10+ years ago, all the crazy incorrect translations of names, weird speculation, and rampant fanboy writings. Gaming journalism has changed in a lot of ways, but in some ways it's still just as ridiculous. I took a bunch of pictures, sorry they are all cell-phone quality. enjoy!

Those PSX console stickers were the best.

They were also the worst years later when I realized they were stupid and tried to remove that smiley face from mine.

I use to love the free crap that Nintendo Power would come with. NES stickers, trading cards, extra mini magazines that came with that month's issue -- it was amazing.

I try and throw or give away magazines after I read them so I don't come across a stack of them while cleaning and end up rereading them again.

I still have that shirt. I also still have my Harvest Moon shirt, and Dreamcast shirt.

Also: what kind of dumbass doesn't remove their address label from things before donating, trashing, etc.

You should buy all of them, then mail them back to that guy. One per month.

I like how the guy clearly called the guy Victor in the fan art photo when obviously, it's Vincent. Also, the innocent speculation "Will Cloud return in FFVIII?" really made me chuckle for some reason.

Also below the headline about FFVIII is the announcement of Ehrgeiz, maybe the worst thing Squaresoft ever did. It was nicely offset by Einhander though.

I LOLed. I imagine it was probably his mom or something that threw them out. Maybe he died? I always wonder how things get in thrift stores.

I remember having to talk a friend into taking some clothes to the salvation army. His roommate moved out and he was going to put 6 boxes of almost new clothes in the trash.
