Arcade Appreciation April #3 - The Ninja Warriors

Back when I was younger, Ninja Warriors was the sort of game I'd watch and not play. This was mainly because it scared the hell out of me. You're essentially playing as a terminator-ninja and when you fail you explode piece by piece. Sure you're fighting to stop a tyrannical president but you never really forget that you're in control of what is essentially a weapon, an un-feeling android that could very well turn on its masters and wipe out the human race.

Granted it'd probably take awhile because these guys move very slowly and methodically. Each stage consists of slicing through dozens of soldiers, dealing with a handful of mid-bosses, and so on and so forth. Since you're not the most maneuverable ninja you have to trust in your limited move-set and read every situation so that you get away with minimal damage. That's a key word here. While you do get damaged from colliding with soldiers what's actually going to kill you is getting shot in the face, blown up, or sliced in twain by a massive sword. Your most important move is going to be your block, since it's the only way to get close to most of the mid-bosses.

Take for example the armored fellas with their hook & chain. They're quite easy to take out, just move in while defending, wait for them to swing, punish, block swing, punish, etc. Other enemies such as the masked ninjas are usually handled via the flip. This is a very fun move to pull off because the ninja warriors is invincible while in motion. The more defensive aspects of this game are its best. Flipping out of the worst situations is really satisfying. The sooner you master them the sooner you'll see beyond stage 2 when playing without continues. Oh and try to save those shurikens for the tank gunners, that's the only way to deal with them.

Not sure what else to say here. When most people talk about Ninja Warriors it's the SNES game. Personally I think the arcade game still yields some good qualities. Although I really wish the hit-boxes were tweaked a bit. When behind an enemy soldier if you try to walk up to stab them while they're looking around you'll end up taking damage. It's ridiculous because there's at least a good two feet of space in-between. Also getting stuck on a staircase because there's a mid-boss right on top of it is not fun in the slightest.
