I had an estate income tax return to do today, pretty much immediately after I returned home from retail work and had dinner. Notice the phrasing there, because that is different from a mere estate tax return, which is filed one time on a different form and only applies if, as of 2012, the estate is worth at least $5 million at the time of valuation. Independent of that is an estate income tax return, which occurs every year for the income which the estate receives. Having not filed a Form 1041 before, I wasn't aware that the usual deadline for filing said form is on the normal due date for Individual Form 1040 income tax returns, which would be today. Upon reading that news in the instructions, I went out to the filer's home and proceeded to fill the return out on the spot. It's really not much different from a normal 1040 return if you only have items of interest and capital gains. On top of making a separate trip to do that, we had to arrange to have the paper forms printed at a neighbor's place because their own printer was out of ink and the place from which they usually purchased more ink has gone out of business.
