        Wii U

Bit by Bit, We Learn More
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

Strangely, Nintendo debuted the Wii U with much pomp about its features while remaining mum on its hardware specifications. Certainly, the average Wii user wouldn't care to know about the chips inside it, but the lack of information led to much head-scratching among the press, and they were largely responsible for propagating Nintendo's announcement.

Fortunately, those same journalists were inspired by their wonderment and eventually uncovered what's inside of the successor system, and it serves to impress.

Focusing on the Wii U and 3DS
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

When the conference began shortly after 9:00AM yesterday, June 7th, late arrivals were still shuffling into the Nokia Theater, and Shigeru Miyamoto was speaking through a translator about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and – surprise, surprise – the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda in general. While chatting it up about Link wasn't unexpected, it did serve to quash the pre-E3 rumor that Skyward Sword would be moved to the Wii U, as the title's slated to be released in late 2011, and the new system won't see the light of day till next year.

By mentioning the Wii U already, we're getting ahead of ourselves, so let's take a step back and review what happened through the course of the conference.

        Can Vita Defeat the 3DS?
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

As usual, a lot of E3's secrets were leaked in the days just prior to the show, but that hasn't deadened the din surrounding Sony's upcoming handheld, the PlayStation Vita. Formerly known as the NGP, a lot of the Vita's features aren't quite “Next Generation” (as its old codename implied), but the system's abilities showcase how Sony is finally getting with the times.

        Nintendo Was Sort of Hacked
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

Given Sony's embarrassing security woes (which resulted in the theft and leakage of over 100,000,000 users' account data), everyone knew it wouldn't be long till another major game company was targeted. Unsurprisingly, the “hacktivists” known as LulzSec went after what some people would assume to be the weakest link, Nintendo, and... well, they really didn't do much of anything at all.

Final Fantasy XI Improves as Final Fantasy XIV is Forgotten
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

Prior to the release of the unbeatable juggernaut, World of Warcraft, there was a relatively well-reviewed MMO on the market, simply known as Final Fantasy XI. Though praised upon its release, the subsequent expansions and other such content were almost completely ignored by the media, a trend which continued until a new, extraordinarily challenging in-game foe rendered numerous players ill.

Pandemonium Warden briefly bought Final Fantasy XI another spot in the limelight, and exemplified how negative attention can become good, free advertising, but its developers’ bullheaded aversion to change squandered the opportunity it afforded. It was as if Square Enix wanted their MMORPG to fail, thereby flushing a monthly source of $4,500,000 right down the drain – and then, out of the blue, they came up with an ingenious means of reinvigorating interest:

They released Final Fantasy XIV, a title so awful that Final Fantasy XI appeared brilliant in comparison.

Honor your fallen, and fight for the future!
        By Valerie Hilgenfeldt

Depending upon whose view you adopt, getting noticed in our increasingly wired world is either simpler than before or tougher than it has ever been. Think about it: with a web presence, you're destined to reach at least one person – that, or doomed to be drowned out by the masses. Do you adopt the negative, assuming you'll fail before you've begun to fight, and settle for doing a whole lot of nothing? Or are you enraged by the concept of obscurity, determined to fend off oblivion and ensure you'll leave a legacy behind?

The ferocity of the latter concept can be wholeheartedly applied to the Protomen, a relentless rock 'n' roll group whose mastery lifts them above their game-inspired brethren.
