I don't think I enjoyed any game more than I did Nier this/last gen, if we keep things limited to home consoles. I had a lot of fun with the Neptunias and quite a few PSN/Live games, but I don't think anything really affected me like Nier. If you stick with it and see all the endings (which requires multiple playthroughs, although it mercifully starts you from the midpoint of the game when you load a new game plus), you'll see it's one of the saddest goddamn games ever made. I freely admit I teared up several times while playing. It may also have the best post-PSX Square soundtrack ever. Check out the supplementary materials floating around on the internet when you're finished. The lore is surprisingly detailed and there are some pretty overt links to the original Drakengard.

    Unfortunately,

These are the types of games Becker loves. These are the kind of games he wants the Japan Studio to make. "These games are close to my heart," said Becker. "I love these art house type games. So, I think these kinds of titles, we'd love to continue to make, and they are indeed representative of J-Studio." Becker went on to add that the goal is to provide more than simply action, but rather, something special. "It's a deeper experience."
These are the kind of games he wants the Japan Studio to make. Ugh. Listen, fella. You're saying one thing is your goal, then doing another that doesn't work towards it. Puppeteer sold like shit. How you gonna be "relevant worldwide" and step in for the other japanese third parties with stuff like Puppeteer, Rain and Knack? Those are neither 1. appealing to a mass worldwide audience or 2. stereotypical japanese style games. Knack is a pretty PS1 game like Croc or Crash Bandicoot or something. Eww. Rain is Ico-ish, which is nice but not what you really need. Puppeteer wasn't colorful enough to appeal to kids and not challenging enough for gamers. The first thing you need is a franchise game. Period. Every studio needs one to build awareness of your name. Unless you have an Ape Escape game in production, you're gonna need to figure a new one out. And you know what's great about Ape Escape? It's bright and colorful. I feel like you might be trying too hard to avoid a Nintendo-esque look sometimes. But the kids and their parents see a bright and colorful game, and they know it's for them. Or maybe you don't feel like Ape Escape is a "deeper experience"? Needs a bit more art house? Hopefully not.

I'm a little concerned this guy's personal taste might interfere with the goals they've set and I hope that the stuff that fits their needs hasn't been shown yet.

    Interesting article.

Becker now runs Japan Studio and it was in the studio's Tokyo offices that he told me about his goal: "For Japan Studio to be relevant globally in two and a half years."
"We launched the PS Vita and saw few AAA titles to suit the Japanese market," Yoshida said. "Everyone got a wake up call." The solution was obvious and it was going to involve Sony's Japan Studio. "We really have to support our first party," Yoshida remembered thinking. That was 2011. And by the next year, Sony brought in Allan Becker to make sure that the studio could deliver.
Japan Studio growing and stepping up while the other japanese third parties chase smartphone microtransaction money sounds great. Provided, of course, they make the kind of games we used to get from japan that we don't get anymore.

Wow, after about giving up, I found it. Bomber Bikers of Shonan.

Unfortunately, it seems like all trace of the english fansubs has disappeared. I am livid.

Anywhoo, I remembered this after finishing Kenka Bancho for PSP. Man, those japanese high schoolers in mid to late 70s and early 80s sure seemed to have fun.

And, yeah, you really have to appreciate the anime like Reporter Blues/Cooking Papa/Ashita No Joe, etc. I feel like the anime for adults is always dark nowadays. Stuff like Darker than Black or Psycho-Pass. Well, at least the Hajime no Ippo anime is off and on.

Also, that Reporter Blues opening vaguely reminds me of Yoko Kanno music from Uncharted Waters 2, and it's driving me batty trying to remember.

Trying to find the name of a super generic high school delinquent anime that I've forgotten. Just stumbling upon some other stuff I thought you might enjoy.

"Moomin need not have worried, for the Little Mys of this world are practically indestructible."

A body could probably write a pretty freakin' good dissertation comparing Peanuts and Moomins. Little My and Lucy is so obvious it hurts, plus their brother/half-brothers (Linus/Snufkin) are the wise-beyond-their-years characters.

Maybe the tumblr kids are from Europe. Moomin is big there. Moomin theme park 'n everything. Next time you see a hot svedish chick, tell her how awesome moomin is.

Did you watch Memories? That was a good big budget compilation. That's the last one I remember, too.

Several of P3's characters are awful. I think the only one I really liked was Koromaru. Just the idea of a Persona-using dog is awesome.

I definitely don't want you doing anything that's going to cut into time you need for more important things. How about by Christmas, so you don't have to worry about it or feel rushed?

Snow Bike is Snow Bike

by Finch on 22 Dec 2011 at 03:37 PM
A few years ago i got some big old snow tires for my bike. They're extra fat and they're studded, so they do a pretty good job. Usually i can trudge through the worst storms with aplomb. I've lost traction a few times but as of yet, on a snowy or icy surface, i have not fallen over with these tires, and only once have i had to get off my bike because i couldn't grip the ground. Sure, i've wrecked on a dry sandy road, slipped on grass, even gotten a sprained knee from slipping in a puddle on a warm

Fixies SUCK!

by Finch on 19 Aug 2010 at 08:01 PM
Why do people hate fixies so much but give single speed bikes a free pass? Why are hipsters associated with fixies, when there are enough purple bikes with neon-green Deep-V with gold freewheel hubs to completely disassociate hipsters with fixed gears? Mostly it's people being ignorant. It's fun to be a dumbass when everyone else is doing it, but sometimes... sometimes... don't you wish you had something you could care about without everyone making fun of it? If you don't want to be a stupid asshole,

CARS VS. CYCLISTS! FIGHT!

by Finch on 25 Jun 2010 at 11:16 AM
This morning i drove by myself for the first time in over a year. Now i feel all aggressive and mad! I remember why i used to scream all the time and drive recklessly: when i want to get angry, there's not a satisfying outlet. A few twitches and i could ruin someone's life pretty bad, but on my bike, i really have to put effort into getting angry. A quick sprint will get it all out.
Now while you're fuming over what this stupid ass cyclist thinks he knows about driving, what do you hate about

Work laziness

by Finch on 21 Jun 2010 at 08:54 PM
Being that i'm the only employee where i work, sometimes i'm the only person actually at work. On most days, i go about what i'm supposed to do, interspersed with Facebook time and email time, and sometimes playing vidya games time.
There are also some days where work isn't particularly busy or i can't fill orders because of missing supplies, so i don't work as much and spend more time on doing things that aren't valuable at all. On these days, i reflect it by writing down "2 hour break"
