We Had This Guy Like A Pretzel On The Ground

Alleged carjacker Tyrone Hogan learned that you should be more careful when selecting mugging victims. Specifically, it is a bad idea to take on a group of able-bodied athletes and a very bad idea to take on a traveling judo squad. Furthermore, if you do so then you should be prepared to be forcefully restrained, bloodied, and doused with gasoline before being handed over to the cops.

According to the Los Angeles Times, it all started at around 1:30 pm on Sunday, August 18th, when 20-year old Tyrone Hogan allegedly carjackaged a man and women outside their Hollywood-area home. After pulling the man out of their automobile, Hogan got into the driver's seat and drove off with the woman inside. After attempting to grab the woman's purse, officials say that Hogan then forced the woman out of the traveling car. He then pulled into a Mobil gas station to steal another vehicle.

Unfortunately for Hogan, the beige minivan that he selected was occupied by the Florida International University Judo Team. Apparently lacking any form of common sense, Hogan asked a member of the coed judo team for money and then struggled with other team members as he attempted to gain control of the minivan. Several members then joined in "restraining" Hogan with what they called a "Boyd Hold."

For his troubles, Hogan was bloodied, arrested, treated for minor injuries and is being held on $1.2 million bail.

Blackbelt TV would like to remind other would-be carjackers that there are over 5 million martial artists in the United States and self-defense classes are at an all time high. Therefore, before you try to forcefully gain control of an occupied vehicle, make sure to first ask yourself as to whether you feel lucky.

Thats arrogant and ignorant. Most martial artists really don't know how to fight for real. Just because someone has taken self defense classes does not make him/her a formidable fighter.

I've seen 3rd Dan blackbelts get dropped by drunken pot-bellied 40-somethings.

Play it safe- vigilante street fighting rarely works.

You're right, but people who compete in a full contact environment tend to be able to handle themselves much better than some guy whose only real training is through sparring. Competetive judo's not a bad thing to learn, because you're actually throwing people around for real.

What do you train in?

True. However, many (most) styles as they are taught today are either outdated or too modified for sports.

Many of the deep stances and cross blocks used in some Japanese styles were designed to be effective on small boats, with weapons, or while wearing gauntlets and other armour. Some styles are simply useless unless complimented with other styles- a wing-chung stance is impractical on the street if it isn't complimented with at least some boxing-type skills.

Also, many arts are "watered down" by sporting application and/or shortcomings in the training method. Many Taekwondo schools get their students so accustomed to point-fighting that they are ill-equipped to strike with enough force to actually cause damage to the target.

I once sparred with a sport Taekwondo paractitioner who had a natural talent at quick reaction and hitting openings. He was MUCH better than I was at exploiting openings. However, he was so conditioned to hitting for points that his kicks were VERY weak. He was also completely unaccustomed to taking hard hits- he was shocked when I hit him with even a moderate degree of power.

I also got to see a blackbelt get beat down just recently at an arcade in Sleazeside NJ. A punk kid threw a punch at my friend. He successfully redireccted the strike, and send out a counter punch straight to the kid's face. However, the punch did not connect, and it was just held about 1 inch from his fact- my friend was so used to not making contact with his target and holding his strike out that his skill was useless. The kid pummeled my friend real good after that.

There was this one fellow in a self defense class I teach who, after only seven 1-hour classes figured he was the frickin' Last Dragon. He got his ass kicked in a mall fight. The little punk then told ME off because my class was "a sweaty load of useless shit". Whatever. :confused:

For martial arts training to be useful in the street, you need to train A LOT. You must also train for a real attack and learn how to make full contact with your target and also how to take a hit.

Its a shame to see so many people who take even a few years of martial arts classes simply assume that they are great fighters who will one day teach a street punk his lesson. They then go and get into a fight with their false sense of security and get really hurt. :(

Whew! I guess I am gonna have to stay late at work after taking the time to type all that :)

He'd be regretting it, if he lived to tell about it. Kicked up a notch, some of those UFC moves could really hurt considering that UFC fighting is done for the KO or submission rather than points (though that's also possible).

boxing is a good contact sport. But I'd say if you do any training while working with the basics, you should also learn to center your striking methods around a more aggressive style so that you're able to handle any unwanted assualt and still be capable of putting someone in his place.

One of my friends isn't aware that Tae Kwon Do isn't very useful in real life (at least at his level). He's fucking strong as, and plays Football for state, so he could kick the shit out of most people, but he some times tries to apply his Tae kwon do stuff into fighting, and it doesn't really work.
