Terranigma

I swear, someone, somewhere up high hates me. I've been trying desperately to get a Euro Terranigma and a Pro Action Replay 2 (so I can play it), for the longest time, since I've heard so much good about the game and I desperately want to play it (no, I will not emulate). Well I've finally suceeded on both quests and come home prepared to begin a marathon. I plug Terranigma into the Action Replay... then plug the Action replay into my SNES. I then go to turn the power on... and I find I can't. :( It turns out that on the front of the Pro Action Replay 2 that the piece of plastic slides is to small for a SNES Model 1 at least. Well no problem I figure... fortunately for me we have a converter add on, for people with a non modded system at the store. I then run to the store, pick it up, and come back ready to go. So I put everything back together, plug it all into the SNES (it's now beginning to resemble a tower) and turn it on and... nothing. Nothing at all. So I decide to plug in a game that I know works into the converter. I grab tetris attack, plug it in and... nothing. The freaking converter is defective. So now I'm sitting here completely screwed. I guess I'm going to have to ask the boss to bring his Dremel into work on Monday so we can drill the PAR so that it will fit into the SNES. Dammit all... no Terranigma for me untill Monday know... I hate the world. :(

Damn! That sucks. If there was ever a game(besides Rockman and Forte) for the SNES that needs to be converted to the GBA this is it. What are they waiting for?

Come on, man.. That's only three days! I have to wait at least two more weeks for more supergun and MS3 and Zupapa! are staring me in the face.

As far as I know only action replay version 2 and 3 works around the territory lock, but version 2 won't allow you to save... from what Ragnarok told me since he actually used it. I know you can also modify the SNES with clipping some connections and running bypasses but this is a very tricky thing I would never attempt myself :(

You can join my club, the Terranigma has but can't play club :( ... someday it will be played though ;)

What what what?!?!?!?!?!?!?! I wouldn't be able to save? Well that would be a pretty damned serious problem. And I have no idea where to ever find a PAR version 3. Allright where's Ragnarok at then? I need his assistance I guess... I may be ready and willing to perform some operations on the spare SNES I have, if it's not too complex.

Here is all the info I can find on the mods, one if for a 50/60 mhz which isn't required for the lockout chip and the other is disabling the lockout chip which is required.

Funny thing is I have 3 PAL SNES games, both Mystic Quest and Secret of Evermore work fine and have no such lockout chip... but the one that was never released out here Terranigma does, WHY! :(

Yes, bbobb, unfortunately I am the foremost expert on this subject. It started in spring of 1999 when I visited England with my parents and picked up a brand-new copy of Terranigma for the US-equivalent of about $15. Great deal. So I immediately set about finding a converter that would work it.

First I tried a regular converter and a Magic Key. No luck with either, of course. Then I bought and tried the 1st version of Pro Action Replay. Again, no luck.

So I sold that and took the next step, Pro Action Replay 2, what you have, and, success!...or so I thought. Yes, it would play the game, no problem, but unfortunately, would not allow me to save. I tried to time and again, at first thinking I had a defective cartridge, but I doubted that was the case seeing as how I'd bought it brand-new, and I had NEVER before bought a brand-new SNES or SFAM cartridge that was defective out of the box. Happy I finally actually got to play the game but infuriated I couldn't get it to save, I continued my quest...when one day.

On eBay I found a guy auctioning off a copy of Terranigma with Pro Action Replay 3. He positively GUARANTEED me that the converter WOULD play the game on my US system AND allow me to save. I was determined to win that auction...determined enough that it cost me about $230 in the end. It wasn't a biggie, though, because I later sold that extra Terranigma I had for $200, so the converter ultimately only ended up costing me about $30.

And, ABSOLUTE SUCCESS!! The converter, indeed, ran the game, and would also allow me to save. So, after much trial and error, going through about 5 other different converters before I found the one that DID work. But after all the time...effort...and money, was it worth it?

To that I have to say an unqualified YES! There is NOTHING like playing an Enix Action/RPG in English on your Super Nintendo. :) The quest was long, hard, and fraught with peril, but in the end, it was worth it, I thought.

So there's your answer bbobb, get thee a PAR3, as fast as can be!

Werewolf, no luck in ever finding one man? :( I thought you got one earlier this year just before or after we met at E3?

Where can I get a Pro action Replay 3 for the SNES?

I want Terranigma and I still have a PAL R-Type 3 I haven't been able to play.

The mods mentioned in Werewolf's post do work with Terranigma. I've modded a few SNES systems for Terranigma owners, and it's worked every time.

All PAL SNES carts have a lockout chip, which prevents them from being played in US SNES systems. It's really easy to disable the SNES' own lockout, though, enabling those carts to play.

However, some games (including Terranigma) will detect whether the system is running at 60hz or 50hz, and will refuse to boot if the system's in the wrong video mode. The second mod lets you switch between PAL and NTSC video - you can boot the game in PAL mode, and switch to NTSC after it's started. All PAL games should work with this method. Some NTSC games have the same lockout code - they won't run if you system is set to 50hz.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, I'd really recommend it, since it's a lot nicer than messing with the PAR. If anybody needs the mod done, BTW, I can do it.

Well I got my Action Replay 3 and it works, I can now play Terranigma finally considering I bought it in October 1999 and haven't been able to play it since then... redemption :D

The only way I can get the Action Replay to work is through another converter, I am using a Super 8 / TriStar and it works but it won't when I plug it directly into the SNES... any idea there Ragnarok? :)
