Holy Shit! This Movie was fucking amazing. I had no idea it would be this good. To be honest this Movie scared me, hell
even the video of Anna combing her hair was freaky. The thing that got me was Anna putting the bag over her daughters head, and shoving her into the well. Huh this is PG-13? Who came out of the well and thru the TV? Was it Anna or the daughter? And the Ring was the Well? wasn't it? The Dad also slaughtred the horses too. The friend who went insane also saw the Ring but didn't die? Oh and Naomi Watts is beautiful. I'd go and say this Movie is better than M Night's flicks.

Not to take anything away from Deus13 great thread but I thought this deserved a Spoiler thread as there were so many things to discuss.

Heh the false endings kinda fooled me.

Um who the hell recorded the tape?

Did the cabin owner know about the covered well?

Truly disturbing and unsettling.

What false endings were you talking about? I don't think the cabin guy knew about the well, much less the fact that Samara was in it. I dont think it was actually recorded by anybody, remember in the psych ward, Samara said that she thinks it, and it appears.

I've got a few questions, and I discussed a lot with my friend on the way home from the theatre... the main one that sticks out in our mind...
Why was it wrong for Rachel to help Samara out?

Samara came through the TV.

The titular ring was the light that she saw as the top of the well closed.

I think the horses went insane from the visions that Samara put in their heads. The same thing happened to the horse on the boat when Rachel touched it.

The friend that went insane went insane from seeing what happened to Katie, not from seeing the video (I think).

Naomi Watts IS beautiful.

Better than Nights flicks? Debateable.

This is basically a shot for shot reconstruction of the Japanese original, with very few differences. I'm quite impressed by that, the only problem was that I knew what was gonna happen the whole time. The ending of the Japanese one has a freakier effect IMO though.

Chux, I'm not sure why it was bad for them to let her out of the well, but in Japan there are a few sequels, plus a Manga, plus a few television series, plus a few novels, and there's that horrendous Dreamcast game, so perhaps that's a setup.

Yeah the part about why not helping Samara was good was confusing. Samara was a angry child right? about wanting to hurt people? I wasn't sure if she was meant to be a good or evil child.

Even if Rachel didn't go into the well, she was the only one that had somebody WILLINGLY watch the tape, Noah. Near the end, Rachel said that Samara wanted to be heard, by letting Noah see the tape I wonder if it saved her, but damned him.

What's the deal with the copy? She made a copy, and she was safe also, and if you remember, she was guiding Aidan's hand in order for him to be able to make a copy, what's up with that?

It doesn't matter if you hear it. It gets sent out one way or the other. Remember, Noah didn't hear it either, the answering machine picked it up, and Rachel erased the message before anyone heard it.

When you originally see the SM0012 (or whatever) tape, she is painted in a smypathetic light, as it looks as if her "evil" dad was bringing this all on her. However, when you see the tape the second time, with the closeup, the tape takes on a much more sinister light.

Is she good or evil? My take is most evil, but due to my lack of supporting evidence, I'll take a neutral stance.

Rachel was saved the minute that she made a copy, and showed it to someone else, willingly or not. Going into the well had nothing to do with her salvation.

Now Aidan has to show his copy to someone else, so he can "spread his tragedy like a disease". Then he will be saved.

I did not care for this it all. It left to many unanswered questions. My friends were raving about this movie and I must say I was dissapointed.

I loved the movie (saw it twice this weekend)

The only thing that really disappointed me was the last shot of Samaras eye after she came out of the TV. Looked a little to man-ish, kinda corny. The japanese one looked more freaky, to me at least.

And yeah, I did kinda ruin it for myself by seeing the original first. Though it did help keep the story from getting to confusing.(I heard a lot of people saying they were confused by it)

I also liked the effect at the end of the Japanese version more.

But the I liked almost everything else better in the US one.

I think I will agree to that....for the most part. :)

I just saw the movie in the theatre for the third time last night, and Chux is working on getting me a VCD of it.

This is probably going to take my "Movie of the Year" award. As long as Death to Smoochy doesn't get it first. Also, did Donnie Darko come out this year? 'Cause if so, that'd be a contender also.

Freakiest thing was when they showed the dead girl during the wake part. I liked the movie, but I think I would like the Japanese version more.

I like the US one better, except the ending. The Japanese one doesn't cut to the reporter girl screeching through the streets during the final encounter.

Donnie Darko was 2001, I think.

As for the Ring, I like the japanese version better.

After I saw it I was confused too but the more I thought about it the more I "got" what happened. Is it just me or did it seem like the part where the father got into the bathtub after puting on his funky "headphones" was a tad edited looking? Needless to say I can't wait to see the Japanese version.
on a side note...This was one of the the best flicks for a projectionist, the radio station that put ont he screening wanted me to do all this weird stuff with the lights and sound to get the atmosphere right. It was fun giveing the audience a "hiroshima style" white blast from the lamp and sound rack right after I dimed the lights...the only weird thing was after one of the ushers cleaned out the theater he found a videotape...I wanted to know what was on it but I don't think anybody had the balls enough to watch it

This is my pick for the best movie of the year. It kinda sucks to be the real relatives of the Morgan's though. But the story being partly true, makes it all the more freaky.

I'm interested enough in this movie to the point where I'd definitely want to see the Jap version, especially if the ending is that much better than the American one. I just can't get over how cool this movie was though. It was just so freaky! Days after I saw it I was still thinking about it and what it all meant, but most of my questions were answered in this thread. And yep, Naomi Watts is hella beautiful.

Once I get my VCD back from my friend, I can put it on my ftp, and you can leech it from me as long as you're NOT on 56k.

Who...or what...was Samara anyways? I don't think she was human, myself. I don't recall any mention of her origins, other than her parents went away, and when they came back, they had Samara with them. Mr. Morgan kept saying "My wife was not supposed to have children", which could be interpreted in a couple different ways. Leaving her origins and intentions unexplained is, in my opinion, a major cop-out. It leaves you with nothing except "It's weird because it's weird." Boo.

And why could Aiden talk to her, and why would Samara talk to him anyway. Just because "she wanted to be heard"? Because Aiden was a child? How did Aiden know that "she never sleeps"?

Say Samara is a devil of some kind. What does the devil gain by the spreading of the tape (which I think is a virus created by Samara)? It kills if you don't spread it, which makes sense, I suppose, but why would she want to be heard? I can't help but think it's strongly metaphorical, as far as technology is concerned.

The horses died because they could sense Samara's "virus" without the benefit of telecommunication (as mentioned in the film), and the horses could also not "spread" the virus like Naomi Watts did. This was how & why the horse on the ferry died after Naomi Watts touched it, I think.

I think the US version was hella edited in order to get the PG-13 ranking.

The story was full of anti-technology vibes so prevalent in lots of Japanese anime, which was cool. The Blair Witch "unexplained" bits I didn't care for - it seemed clumsy and unfinished. I'd like to see the Japanese original at some point.

Still, not only was The Ring released by a US studio, it actually made decent money. Shows what happens when filmmakers come up with some original content (I groaned at the previews I saw for Darkness Falls and They - lord, do THOSE look like the same old crap).

I don't think its that Samara is a kind of devil.

The tape is, more or less, her revenge. For being mistreated and for being killed.

She was kept in the barn by her "father", because she was driving her mother insane. Thats when the horses started killing themselves. They kept her awake at night, so she dealt with them. The reason the horse on the boat went nuts, is because it could sense the energy of Samara permiating Rachel.

Some suspension of disbelief is required.

She never talked to him. She "showed him things". Just like she showed everyone else who was infected. The things he told Rachel were from the visions of her that he had in his head.

And, she doesn't gain anything. Why does a bad guy ever do bad stuff? I mean, take Freddy Krueger (in his human form), he killed all those children in Springfield, mostly because he had a fucked up childhood. For one, he was the "Son of a a hundred Maniacs", and two, his father (PLayed in Freddys Dead by Alice Cooper) beat him. Samara had a FUCKED up childhood, which resulted in her premature death, and now she's one pissed off ghost. Metaphorical? Yeah, probably.

Korly, I like your taste in films. Another great film I saw this year is The Salton Sea. If you haven't seen it check it out.

I think their faces were distorted because they had Samara's "virus," which was directly linked to electromagnetic telecommunication, and probably housed in the brain. That aspect reminded me a lot of Lain. Pretty cool effect, regardless.

Korly - OK, so who was this "specialist overseas?" I think that whole report raises more questions than it answers: "insensitive to pain", "abnormality in temporal lobe", etc. It still doesn't completely explain her origin. And it seems Samara "showed" Aiden lots more than she showed everyone else. I'm not trying to blow holes in the plot, I'm just wondering.

Hmmm...I never thought Samara was a ghost. Weird stuff was happening even before she died.

I suppose your right, it just didn't swing with me. It was weird but I just couldn't grasp why. As for Salton Sea it's one of my favorite movies this year, bought the day after I rented it. It's about time Val got some good scripts again. He really doesn't get the attention he deserves. Sometimes I wish he would be more like Depp and pick the oddball films.

Bio, I like your explanation for the distortion.

As far as Samras/Sadakos origin, there is a whole movie (in Japan) that deal with that called Ringu 0. I own the VCD, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. Whether or not they adhere to that in the US is anyones guess, but Naomi Watts is contractually obligated to star in a sequel if they decide to make one.

Yeah, weird stuff was happening before she died, certainly, but everyone involved with this project has always decribed it as a "ghost story" and I agree with them. Of course, the only reason her ghost has such power is because she had some sort of "power" when she was alive. Why she had that power, who the specialist was, etc. Those are questions to be answered in the sequel. This movie was the story of Rachel and Aidan, more so than it was the story of Samara and the Morgans. I sure hope they show us Samaras story in the future though.

As far as her showing more to Aidan, I don't know that there was too much evidence to support that, as it seems Katie (his cousin) was shown things also, as evidenced by her sketchbook, but if he did indeed see more, perhaps it was because he has a lot more, should I say, "leisure time". As soon as Rachel found out was going on, she went right to trying to fix it, and didn't just chill out at all. She was always somewhere researching or something.

I will see the Japanese version first, then see the American version.

Nemesis, I made that mistake. You should see the US version first. Unless you have access to a high quality DVD version of the Japanese one, I think the experience will be watered down for you. My biggest dissapointment going into the US version was that I already knew what was gonna happen, since the plot is almost exactly the same. The ending would have had much greater impact on me if I didn't already know it was coming. Plus, I think the US version is superior in every way except for the jarring way that they cut out of the action during the ending.

Now back to the movie.

We finally saw US version today, and liked it. I didnt find it to be very scary though. Creepy - Yes, but not scary. I havent watched the original Japanese version yet, so I cant comment on that one.

Films ideas were interesting ones, and I agree that Samara had a certain powers since birth, and those powers were affecting people living on the island, as mentioned by the island doctor. They also had a very bad effect on Samara's surroundings(Anna going crazy, Horses killing themselves), and at the end caused Anna to murder her.

Phone ring was an early message that would notify of your upcoming demise, but even if you wouldnt answer it, you would still die(case with Noah). I think Samaras father was still affected by visions, after her death, anf tried to cover up the fact, hoping that it would cause nightmares to go away, but it didnt stop Samara from creating Ghostly tape.

But were there other deaths prior to the hight school kids, who watched the tape? Was it the First appearence of the tape, or other people died before, after watching it? Since there were quite some time passed since Samara's death(I assume about 15-20 years), why would she waited that long to start killings now? Or she did it before, but there are no documented evidence of it?

As for only way to survive the curse is to make the copy of the tape, and pass it one to someone else to watch. That brings the question - What if the person who gets the tape from, for example Aidan, will make a copy in 7 days she/he have and passes it to the next receipient, and next person does the same? Repeat the process needed number of times, would that mean that they all would survive the curse, and Samara wont kill any of them? Granted, until the last person who will see it.

Also, Every time Samara came out from the tv, it was a big, or medium sized screen. What if the person only had a small 20 inch or less screen. Does that mean she would be able to squeze through, or get stuck, or become smaller?

This thread illustrates the one aspect of the movie I didn't like: the loose plot points. Everyone here has all these questions because the film makers were too fucking lazy to tie up the plot at the end. It's like MGS2:The Movie. Other than that, though, I liked it. Oh yeah:the ending was a little bit weak. All you have to do is make a copy of the tape and you don't get killed? That's fucking retarded. It really doesn't bring the story to any kind of conclusion...the girl is still going out and killing the people that watch the tape. I wish they had reached some conclusion with Samora. Here's my main question: why was it so bad to help Samora?

Well, They really didnt explained why it was bad, to find Samara's body. Based on the facts, we can assume, that it will somehow give her ghost more freedom, since she wont be trapped in the well anymore. Other than that, she would continue killing people who watched the tape, so the burrial of the body, wont change the outcome.

I believe they mentioned in the movie that the tape was like her nightmares or something. I just think it would be really crazy to film a nightmare and watch it, with all those fucked up images and whatnot. Although I heard somewhere that dreams and nightmares really only last like 3 seconds, it just seems like longer in your brain, so maybe that wouldn't work, but it's still a pretty damn cool idea.
