Battle Royale
Hey:
Finally, after a year of saying "I'll buy it sooner or later", I finally saw Battle Royale last night. For those who don't know, Battle Royale is about a group of ill-mannered middle school students who are taken to a remote island to compete in a huge death match against each other until one is left standing. My thoughts:
I really liked this movie. But to compare it to another Japanese horror film I saw for the first time recently, Ring, Battle Royale is little more than a splatter film with an interesting plot. However, judge it on its own merits and it becomes a decent flick with a lot of suspense and some twisted humor. It is fantasically violent--probably the bloodiest thing I've ever seen outside of Dead Alive. There are plenty of disturbing scenes, but it seems as if the director, Kinji Fukasaku, tried to limit it to jaw-dropping killings, there are no rape scenes or anything. But I guarantee one thing: when you see the jogger girl stab a boy to death, starting with his crotch, you will wince at the sight. And there's plenty more where that came from. I've read that this film is supposed to be a satire on modern media violence, but I personally think Robocop is more suited to that role. All in all, a solid movie and I reccomend.
Anyone else seen it? What did you think?

Have you ever seen Story of Ricky?
Thats probably the nastiest film I've watched.

I've seen it and I liked how it refered to the students as numbers when they were killed. Made it seem like a system - more methodical. I do think that it had elements that made it seem like some kind of dumb film but one thing stuck me - I hope no one sat at the edge of thier seat and proclaimed "AWESOME" when someone got killed in whichever terrible fashion that they did.
I liked the hacker kid - I figured that'd be me if I found myself in such a situation... funny how one conjures such hypothetical circumstances in ones head no matter how undesireable. I though that the 2 exchange students looked too much like KOF characters to be taken seriously though.

I enjoyed the film alot. Interesting story. Horrible situation, where kids forced to kill each other in order to survive. The film is very violent, but I agree that its not the kind of violence, that makes you say, WOW that was Cool. Although, I was happy when psycho bitch, and transfer student got what they deserved.
Was good to see Takeshi Kitano, and his character was pretty weird. Loved the part at the end, with cell phone :)
There is Director Cut version available, both in UK Tartan 2 disk release, and Korean SP Edition. It have more blood, some extended scenes.
Also, There are rumors, that part 2 will be coming next year. I will post more info, as I find out.

Bloodiest thing you've seen outside of Dead Alive? I love this movie, it's one of my all-time favorites now, but give me a break, there was very little violence compared to most films. A little splash of blood there, splash of blood here, that's it.

I just bought what was being called a "Special Edition" of the movie and half the subs are missing :( Any links you can provide me to get a version with with all the subs would be greatly apreciated.
