Few questions answered... More questioned posed.
What will SNK Neo Geo USA's real purpose be? A simple arcade distributer? A publisher?
Perhaps the most interesting thing on the entire site is the Zupapa! page, where a quick and dirty Zupapa! AES cart cover art picture is shown... What does this mean? Are they putting together an AES release of the game? But.. who? SNK USA? Playmore?
This is muy confusing.
And it looks like the SNK Engrish is still in full force.

This branch of Playmore has been around for a bit over a year. From browsing the neo-geo.com forums, it seems they're only distributing MVS kits at the moment. I do recall running across a blurb -- though I have no idea where I could find it now -- that said they were looking into the whole NGF thing.
It seems that they're sticking to SNK's roots -- the site is closed right now, but the main graphic says "For updating temporally close"... That's got to be a SNKglish reference... ^_^

Does this mean that it will be updating soon? Temporally close literally means soon, although It's likely they meant something else.
At the very least, we can look forward to a more direct distribution channel for MVS stuff, which will hopefully translate into lower prices.

Playmore does indeed have games coming out in the future for the PS2 and GBA, too. Well, yea.... one Metal Slug game for the GBA and some ports for the PS2. But I guess it's a start.
Well, they've not announced their new business model. Yeah, they're continuing the distribution of MVS titles, but that's a no-brainer. I think they'll probably branch out into other areas (like home console publishing), but here are some ways they could keep alive with just the arcade business:
- Cut prices and discourage retailers from selling at collector-rip-off prices. This may allow more arcades to make use of those old NG units by buying new titles.
- Possibly republish some older games. Yes, it will piss off the collectors.
- Switch new development to the Crystal System or similar hardware. The NG is good, but it's still old hardware that should probably be phased out.
- Start making and distributing classic NG hardware and re-brand it as such at a lower price. Market to smaller places like grocery/convenience stores, restraunts, etc. to "re-plant" the idea that games are good for revenue, especially when brand new cabinets with modern games are cheaper than they were when arcade games were big.
- Release NG development kits to the community, free of charge. Start a program to publish homebrew games, with Playmore retaining a royalty fee from the profits.

The idea of republishing old games has been mentioned before, but Playmore has no intentions of ever doing so. It really would be nice, though. $2,000+ MS carts make me sick.
The Crystal System is beyond dead. It has two games and there are no others in production. It's a waste, pretty much.
That's for sure. If SNK wants to try to go mainstream on us, they should choose between System 246, TriForce, and Chichiro (sp?). They'll be amazed how publishing on CD/DVD reduces manufacturing costs.Quote:

Under $150? Which auction were you looking at? Anyway, yea... The original Metal Slug home cart usually goes for over $2,000. Friggin collectors. It's rare, yea... but collectors are mentally ill, in addition. MS2 and X aren't too cheap, either. They're in the 4-500 range, I think. The MVS carts are another story, of course. They're only a fraction of the price... Loose MS, MS2, and MS2 MVS carts are all under $100 each.
Yea, there is hardly any info about the Crystal System anywhere. Perhaps because no one gives a damn about it. I don't even know the whole story behind the thing, other than it's beyond dead.

I wasn't thinking with my last post. I meant to say that they might want to go with an enhanced-CD system if they wanted to market a low-cost arcade setup (the "classic" line I was talking about). Better yet, they could just offer it directly to gamers over their website. Publicize it in various places (banner ads on Gamespot, ads in magazines, etc.) and they ought to get a decent amount of buyers. Their big problem with such things has been capital -- they did this with the Pocket and managed to get it into stores, but once they ran out of money it all imploded. If they had been able to stay in the market longer, they might have seen some decent profits.Quote:

Sorry, I was thinking of loose MVS carts but didn't specify it in the post. That's why I mentioned putting price caps on retailers -- yeah, that won't stop collectors, but if they keep a steady stream of merchandise to the retailers, the collectors won't have much of a chance to mark up. That again goes back to getting the systems out there -- and quite frankly, if they were able to get their unit production high enough to lower overall costs, they could sell new high-memory carts for $80 -- people were paying close to that for high-memory SNES, Genesis and N64 carts at various points...Quote:

It's all just a pipe dream, but this really kind of illustrates some of the business opporuntities SNK just plain screwed up on...
For updating temporally close
A good idea for SNK would be a system I'll call the "Neo-HDD". Basically it would be their counterpart to the Ultracade but with Neo-Geo games only, and using the real Neo hardware.
The games could come on CDs, and this special Neo board could be interfaced with a good size high speed HDD (probably 40 GB) and enough RAM to hold the highest Meg game. High score saves could probably be done via Flash Ram or a second smaller HDD.
Installing a game would be almost as much of a snap as changing an MVS cart. Instead of the 6 game maximum you see on the MVS, an operator could run a cab with a virtually unlimited selection.
SNK could turn a hell of a profit on this, since CDs are cheaper to make- and they could price the games lower to draw interest from the operators. Operators who flinch at the thought of a new MVS cart costing $1,200+ may probably bite if they can get a CD version for $600 or less. The older games could be released on multi-game packs like Ultracade.
I'm going to pull a Master and tell you that in regards to SNK in the U.S. I'm aware of some changes that will be happening in about 17 months that will probably shock a few people.

All nintendo need to do is release a special sound chip onboard the carts (like the snes FX chip developed by argonaut, only this will be dedicated for sound and music for heaps of channels to match the neo instead of for graphics) and I will be in portable neogeo gaming heaven.
Games like gekido are already looking pants wetting and make me long for some neo games on the little system.
