Computer Problem....

Alright, I'm having a problem sending and recieving files from people over AOL Instant Messenger on Windows XP, I keep getting the following error:

Connection problem with RandomUser; the file will not be sent. (Your 'Internet Connection Firewall' may be on. If you and your buddy are each behind a different firewall, then the connection will not work.).

It's not even with all users either, I can do it fine with one user then it won't work with another. I've tried lowering security on my Internet Preferences but no luck. Any help?

Tell your firewall/router to let the AOL port through. Look for a section on the firewall's configuration screens about port forwarding or port triggering.

On my Linksys, I'm using port triggering. This detects when your computer wants to send or someone's sending in something on a particular port or port range. It opens up the requested port for use by that program. The port range I use for AOL is 5190-5200.

AIM = Security Nightmare.

It's funny, I could transfer files fine with AIM, but not so with Trillian.

Rick, make sure you have your settings right in your AIM preferences. Are you on high speed, and do you have a firewall installed?

If it's only with certain people, the problem may be on the other person's side. Do those people have problems connecting with people other than you?

If the other person is using AOL and not AIM the file transfer won't work.

OK here's my computer problem:

I just got my Uncle's old PC. It's a P3/500 Gateway pos. There's 64M in the first of 3 SIMM slots and he gives me a 256 chip and tells me to put it in. No problem, I thought.

So I do the necesseary precautions and get it in, only finally figuring out after calling Gateway tech that the higher-meg chip has to be in the 0-bank slot (since the PC did eventually recognize the 256M chip but wouldn't load past the BIOS screen). So I said no problem, turned everything off and swtiched the memory chips, etc.

Well now I get no video/monitor signal out of the thing. At all. Taking the machine to two places as well as sitting on Gateway tech phones for an hour and a half hasn't helped anything.... soooooo if anyone here has an idea I'd love to hear it.

Are you and your friend both in a college campus with a school firewall? That might complicate things...

What speed is the RAM (i.e. PC100? PC133?)? Sometimes faster RAM will clock down, but sometimes the motherboard can't work with it. Also, what brand of RAM is it?

It is infact ALR/Gateway RAM. It's 133Mhz, too. The old 64 chip is 100hz.... but, like I said, the system did recognize the memory before stopping the boot process so I don't think it's incompatible.

I think this is just something I'll let the tech shitheads worry about.

Linksys is nice... I should get one if only for Port Triggering. D-Link is crap, I got it because it was cheap :/ I just open a DMZ through the default range (as you showed above).

Well... recognizing it and not crashing because of it are two different things... If your motherboard is 100 Mhz, then you should probably stick to 100 Mhz RAM. If that's the case, see if you can return the 133 Mhz RAM and find some 100 Mhz.

Yeah, that model router (41) is an extremely good value. Linksys is still adding features to the firmware, if you can believe that -- and the model is over a year old. Everyone should have one.

I SHALL have one then.... as soon as I get my Internet connection back (hurry your ass up Time Warner!). I need a new computer on top of that. Once I find a game that just won't run right or at all on my hardware (UT2K3) it's time to get a new one. I suppose that can get done this Sat.

ID-10t errors all over the place...

PC133 is thought by a lot of people to always be backwards compatible. It's not always compatible. :)

dog$, if you took the memory out, and you're still having videocard/monitor problems....you may try resetting the video card into the motherboard, perhaps you knocked it out accidentally.

I had a friend fry his motherboard the other day by putting in incompatible RAM, it freaking burned a hole in the memory. Hopefully it didn't fry your board.
