"Hero" is currently having its one-week Oscar qualification run in ONE 100-seater theatre in Shenzhen, China. It has been showing twice per day, with EXTREMELY TIGHT security for anti-piracy purpose (reportedly it's tighter than going through safety check at airports. No bags are allowed. No cell phones. No watches. Even eye glasses are checked for micro-camcoders. The ratio of security guards to audience is 1:3 inside the theatre.) A couple of reviews have been seen on Chinese news. So far the words have been very good on the film. It is described as a banquet for eyes and it is very emotional.
The only criticism on the film I saw is about the music. Some said the music was overused and some moments would be much better without it. Tan Dun's music, the violin solo and the drum beats made it sound like a CTHD 2.
The official release date of "Hero" is Dec 19 in China and Hong Kong.
Edit: Damn I wish it was translated :p
Hopefully this film will come to US next year, and will be available on HK dvd next spring.
