Ey Bern-D, how do you fight the 1-4 boss with Valpiro? Specifically, the 1st form... I usually fire a charged shot with Marion or Alucard after dodging those three "curved line" shots by the boss. I can't really do it with Valpiro.
I started using him and it's both easier and harder than using Marion...

I punch the three turrets on the left and carry that punch
over to the fourth. If any turrets remain, I just shoot
them. Then I just dodge until the first form
self-destructs.
Remember, my primary goal is to survive. I just leave those
side turrets alone, so I don't add needless bullets
on-screen. I don't know how to deal with them any other
way.
I don't have a good plan for the Robo form, either. Once it
spreads its wings, I punch at the legs. For the next two
attacks, I just dodge and shoot suitably. Then I bomb the
two winder attacks because Valpiro's too slow to dodge them
easily. After that, I punch the boss twice and it's over.
I plan to leave the boss's legs on so that it fires its
"easier" winder attack, but I don't know how to do that
yet.
599,100 - Bern-D / Valpiro 1-6
Finally died to the Stage 1-6 midboss, first attack. How
embarassing.
Oh, and Mode, I think Valpiro has enough time to punch
those two statues before they can attack. It almost worked
fine, but I hesitated for a moment dealing with the
lower-right statue. But I dodged its easy attack anyway.
I'm still working on that Stage 1-4 bird form. I could
dodge the legged winder all right, but I still have to
deal with the two legless winders. Maybe I need to punch
it again to force it to change form sooner.
Umm, here's my 18 Chain... (and, uh, Mode7, I think the Chain chart might be 'neater' if the number was first, followed by the name... not unlike the score chart... :sweat: )

Just stopping by the undergraduate's library to post my
score. I need to relax after this exhilirating run, anyway.
I thought I had memorized the motions needed to dodge
the 1-6 boss's laser attacks, but the boss moves so
quickly. Of course, I wasted my last life on that.
Correction on the statues part in 1-6. The timing is too
tight to destroy the two statues with the Valpiro Punch.
Better to learn the attacks and dodge them.
Any tips on going through the first attack of the second
form of the 1-6 boss? I understand I have to find a crevice
in front of the boss, but the pattern keeps shoving me to
the bottom of the screen. How do I prevent this?
Also, how do I dodge the 1-6 mid-boss's almond-bullet
pattern? I tried to perform the same moves that Tavia did
in that expert play, but Valpiro's too slow to mimic
that...
Not to steal any of Bern-D's thunder, but I finally (finally!) beat that 1-5 boss! Once I figured out how to dodge those 2-3-4s, it really wasn't that bad. I didn't realize just how small those dodges have to be! :eek: Of course, I didn't even get past the initial wave of enemies... :bs:

Yeah, thanks Bern-D for the link. I started my download about 3 hours ago, watched the 20 or so minutes, and walked around the house in circles for about 5 minutes. Sick sick sick. I love how that guy plays... so precise! I cannot believe how high that coin chain went! And above all the player used Tavia (!) and demonstrated the latent abilities of her vicinity attack. It seems Tavia is really the only choice for those with supreme god-like skill and reflexes. Man... Tavia rules.

In Stage 1-6, aphrodite expects me to earn the extend after
destroying the first form of the boss; I can get the extend
just after the jars scene. But the midboss wastes my final
life. For the moment, I'm coin chaining throughout the game
so I can earn that extend earlier and have a better chance
of getting through that midboss. Arr...

I would like to point out this: either it's my imagination
or 1-4 boss's legless winder and loose bullet spray is more
manageable if I power down once at the end of the stage trip.
Also, does coin chaining increase rank? I powered down
twice at the beginning of 1-6, but those small spinning
drones still fired 5-2 bullet formations instead of a
simple 5-way one.
Finally, a score worthy of 1-6! (er, sorry Bern-D)

I couldn't believe it at first, but once I thought about
it, it was my overuse of bombs that helped me earn the
privilege to play 1-7. I think I used 6 bombs in 1-5 and
7 bombs in 1-6. I was that scared to die. And with some
frighteningly fast reflexes through 1-7, I made it to
the midboss.
With some more experience and fewer unneeded uses of the
bomb, I can see myself clearing the first round now.
Damn Bern-D, congratulations.

All I can say is this: when the Medicine God was about to
parish, I had no bombs when I'm supposed to have one and my
gauge was barely filled. So I shot with all my might and
when those frogs came out, I punched one more time. And I
won the draw. Nearly heart-stopping...
I don't know where to go from here. I'm not sure if I want
to take Valpiro all the way to the end or to switch to
Tavia or what...

Probably some coin-chaining. I usually get about 80% 2000s + bonuses from the coins. Morrigan's speed really helps, like on the desert stage, where there's a lot of coins in a relatively small area. That score was also at the very end of 6, so that helped (need practice on that boss...).

Watch the bottom row of bullets as it makes its descent. If you watch closely, a hole will emerge midway. It seems if you wait too long, the bullets intertwine too intricately to slip through. The few times I've actually tried to get through this one, I've moved in a semi-circular pattern (diagonally in, diagonally out). If there's an easy way, I haven't found it.Quote:

OK, I'm a retard. After a more bomb-free examination of the 6 boss form 1, it seems the best tactic is to park your character midscreen, below the cannon, and recede into a diamond-shaped safety zone near the bottom of the screen. There are a few scattered bullets to dodge after that, but this works rather well.

Thanks Rob, I'll definitely give that a shot. Once I can get to that boss with a couple of lives and bombs I think I'll be set. I've been picking up quite a few points from the coins alone right before the boss.

For the record, it didn't even have much of an impact on my score. I only had maybe 20-30 thousand more than usual.

1-6 is giving me all sorts of trouble. Those first enemies are now doing those "suicide shots," and I still feel I have to bomb when I'm bombarded by those screen-filling dots. That "diamond hole" by the first form of the boss still forces me to eke out one more bomb, and although I can dodge the first wave of bullets by the 2nd form of the boss easy enough (thanks to Mode7), without any more bombs I was so dead right after...

It sounds like they want you to be on the right side of the screen and move within a pocket of the pattern, but I'm not quite sure.

The steps listed describe four different attacks. I assume
you're about to destroy the left bit, because it would make
attack #5 easier.
#4. Single net. You should be at the bottom edge of the
screen aligned vertically with the left bit. Stand still
and wait until the boss fires the entire pattern. Then
move two Tavias to the left, using the charge meter as a
guide. The pattern should pass through you.
#5. Loosely-packed needles from the core and rotating
bullets from the right bit. As you look for openings, move
to the right. If you've destroyed the left bit just as this
attack begins, you will not have to deal with those
needles.
If it takes too long to destroy the left bit, you'll have
to deal with rotating bullets from both sides, which is
more difficult to dodge.
#6. Double nets. Watch the space two Tavias to the left of
you. Stand still and wait for the boss to fire the entire
pattern. Then once you see an opening, move to the left
side of it (or move two Tavia's over, however you want to
see it). Stand still again. The rest of the first net and
the lower half of the second net should pass through you.
The rest of the bullets will still threaten you, so dodge
suitably.
#7. Rotating white bullets from the right bit. Dodge
suitably. This attack's relatively easy to dodge.

If progress continues to be too slow, I suggest you switch
to someone with a stronger melee attack--Valpiro, Alucard,

I was using Valpiro for a while but I didn't stick with him long enough, methinks. Perhaps when I go back to the game [DDP is the game of choice right now] I'm try more experimenting with Valprio.

My first death arrived in the 1-3 U.S. stage. Died at a
dumb place, too--the shop with six turrets on its roof. So
I lost 5 bombs. Basically, I salvaged my game through more
selective bombing. Wipe out the most difficult attacks with
the bomb, and dodge the patterns I've practiced at home.
That paid off well...
Did anyone happen to keep GAL's second-loop videos? I need
ones from Stage 2-4 (gb2-4.mpg), 2-America (gb2-a.mpg), and
2-England (gb2-e.mpg).

I would just like to say that both "Original 1" and "Original 2" are not only horrible to watch, they also play differently! Well, I'm sure Original 2 is ok, but Original 1 actually limits your movement! No wonder gemheads and dodging the first wave of shots from the 1-5 boss was near impossible...
Also, is it actually possible to dodge the first wave of shots (and the double shot that follows) from the 2nd form of the 1-6 boss by staying in the middle? I mean, I can lure it to the side and then carefully dodge by going back to the middle (which is really not that hard), but then I'm afraid I won't be able to dodge the next wave. It seemed surprisingly easy in that Galford video, but Tavia dodges that double shot by staying in the middle. I mean, did she have to use her Beam Saber to destroy those shots first? :confused:

I start in the center and move slowly to the left - I can't really explain it (the pattern is kind of instinctual), but I end up sliding right up against the left side of the screen when I'm popping out of the other side. sidestep the lasers. In the center, there is a safe spot
among the first rings of bullets. From the bottom of the
screen, it's a little over one of Alucard's height. The
last ring of bullets will hit you, though, so when those
bullets tap your head, move quickly to the bottom edge, and
they will pass through you there.

I think the player in that video wanted more time to dive
into that crevice. But that's unnecessary if you can find
the safe spot. I think it's better to find it anyway, since
you don't need to do so much joystick tapping to stay
inside the crevice.
For the attack that follows, all you need is a few taps of
the joystick, but I've yet to figure out what landmarks you
should watch to time your dodges.
I'll work on these attacks on Wednesday night, and I'll
give you details if you still need them. I have to figure
these out, too. :)
Oh yeah, and do you guys plan on tackling the second loop?
No way, it's all bonus to me. I'll be moving on to other Psikyo shooters, finishing up Zero Gunner 2 and probably Strikers 1999 after that. I also have Ikaruga and Mars Matrix, which I'd like to put more time into.Quote:

Thanks for the tips guys... and no, given my lack of skill, I think I'll be happy with just clearing the first round. Perhaps I'll work on a zero-bomb game; I know I still go a little bomb-crazy when facing that America stage boss in 1-3! :sweat:

I'm not totally thrilled about this, since I died at two very stupid parts, the first being at the 1-6 gemhead :o , and the 2nd at the first wave of shots from the 2nd form of the 1-6 boss. I also bombed when I actually did dodge that diamond pattern, which kinda really sucked. And what's weird is that I beat that boss with a bomb! :eek: My Gunbird 2-playing friend was right there with me, so that was nice. :)
My experience in 1-7 was of course short lived. Still, I believe I did beat danhaigh (which happened to be my long-term goal), so uh, you know, ha ha :p ha ha lololol :p lol.

Now to describe how to dodge the almond-and-white-bullets
attack from the 1-6 boss's 2nd form.
When the lasers dissipate from the previous attack, stay at
the bottom edge of the screen and align yourself vertically
with the boss's left shoulder (or the very end of the
one-player-side's charge meter). Now focus only on the
white bullets. Watch for the opening one character to the
left of you. When you see this opening, move to it--you
should be on the right side of this opening. Nudge your
character to the left every half-second to a second, making
sure you stay within the lane formed by the white bullets.
Eventually, the pattern will end.
EDIT: Try to nudge yourself over only twice, preferably
after the fourth and eighth waves. Any more nudges and you
might run into the white bullets.
Why does this work? The pattern formed by the white bullets
is fixed while the center bullets of each almond-bullet
wave are aimed directly at you. You want to make sure that
these aimed bullets never obstruct the lane. One way to do
this is to keep these aimed bullets to the right of you.
But the lane never shifts. This means that as the aimed
bullets shove you to the left, the openings narrow. If
you're not careful, these bullets will clog the opening
and you will die. You must begin by maximizing the width
of the opening so that in the end, you still have enough
room to dodge the final bullets. That's why I mention you
should be at the right side of the opening when you enter
this pattern. Because you can just tap the joystick to the
left to evade the almond bullets, you can ignore them and
focus on staying within your lane.
Dodging this pattern still requires precise maneuvers. I
suggest you dodge only if you have no bombs or plan to
avoid using bombs. Wipe it out with a bomb, otherwise.

The black borders come in handy when I need to comment on
stuff, so I don't clutter the picture. If I wanted to
crop the picture, I can do that myself, too. But Triple
Lei, I think others will find your edited videos useful
if they don't want to download one huge video.

Just a testament of my improving consistency. No miss until
the 1-6 boss. Then my game turned sour as I messed around
with my bomb distribution.
Also, as for the 1-6 boss's scattering almond bullets with
lasers, rank affects the speed of the bullets. When I
pushed down when I needed to, I hit the bullets at the
bottom because they were too slow to leave the screen. I
guess the objective is to stay in the crevice--it's not as
easy as pushing down and forgetting about the bullets.
Another miniscule update that will vault me a few positions up the chart.

My Tate setup is busted for now, so I've been playing Original 1 all weekend and it's almost like I'm playing a whole new game.

Man!!! I mean, wow! I still didn't beat the game, but it was a wonderful experience. After dying for the first time on the 1-5 boss (still a bit too early IMO), I found that 1-6 was a LOT easier! Namely, those spinny, spread-shot firing enemies. So I guess this means that, for me at least, losing a life on 1-5 is a good thing! Now that means that I could do those fancy dodging techniques in that vid I posted. If I die, that's ok since I only need two bombs to beat that boss. If I dodge... I dodge and I look good! Either way, it means glory... the only thing that keeps me playing arcade games. :evil:
Ah, now about that 1-6 boss! It was slower than was shown on that other vid I posted, but I dodged it in the same way I had imagined, finding that right hole between a certain pair of bullets. But I dodged it! This means a that you do not have to find that "safe spot" so you stay within the double lasers to ultimately dodge the 2nd wave (i.e., so the boss is still in the middle)! It was still moving toward the center as it was firing the 2nd wave, but I was able to compensate for that and dodge it. Of course I did die again on that snake pattern, but meh...
I had a relatively lengthy 1-7 time too. I made it all the way to the mid-boss, where my game finally ended after that cross pattern. I guess I have to study Mode-7's vid some more, since I wasn't prepared for that other attack. And I'm not Tavia, so I have to dodge that stuff... ugh.
Best of all, at least two other guys (who were fairly good GB2 players themselves, getting up to 1-4), were there to witness my glory! Which means that 1) I'm unquestionably the best player at my arcade (finally at better than the crazy Tavia guy with the even crazier dodging skills), and 2) people can now match the face with "3XL!" :sneak: :lol: Good thing too, since it's finals week, and I won't get to play at the arcade for a good couple of days...

I have finals this week and next, too. But today, I played
six games, all of them dismal performances. Never seen the
1-6 boss in any of them. I doubt I'll want to return to the
arcade for the remainder of the semester, and the arcade
closes during the winter break, so I'll have to wait until
late January to crack some new highs. I hope to be in good
shape by then.
All right, danhaigh wanted to know how I perform these
cutbacks, so here goes.
For the first scene, I would start from the left and move
slowly to the right. When the fourth enemy arrives, I'm
already at the right side. There are three bullets that
determine my fate:
Bullet #4 signals me to cut to the left. I want to moveCode:Enemy number. Part of formation. Bullet position.
#4 (img) 1-way ...
#5 (img) 2-way Left one
#6 (img) 5-way Second from the left
so I can dodge bullet #5, and stop befure I run into bullet
#6. Then I resume tapping the joystick to the left. This is
the basic idea of cutting back to the opposite side. It's
difficult here because enemies alternate sides when they
appear, so bullets come at you from wide angles--those are
tough to see.
Now I have to cut back to the right. I can be less
attenative here, because the enemies are loosely grouped.
Their bullets won't clutter up the screen as much, so I
can dodge them easily.
The second scene is more about positioning yourself
properly. When I see a group of three green-headed enemies,
I should lead their bullets to the left side as best as I
can. This way, I minimize the number of bullets on the
right side, which I will use to dodge the blue enemies'
bullets.
The stray bullets still pose a threat. I just make sure I
don't run into the fourth large bullet in each five-way
shot. Cutting back to the left is done as described
earlier. If this all goes wrong, I would use a bomb.

Thanks for the explanations! I had previously experimented with direction tapping method, but I didn't know where to begin, or how far my taps should go. My method is a bit different (the main difference being the longer left / right movements and less tapping), so I just made my own video, going all the way up to the four statues:

wmv format for crap quality but small file sizes! 1.73 MB for 57 seconds. I decided to lower picture quality in favor of smoother motion, which is why it looks pretty blurry. Still very watchable, however. IMO. I do have a "good" DivX version, but it's 12 MB, and I don't think Bern-D is open to hosting requests. :rolleyes:

statues and weaken the mid-boss.
Edit: Okay, I learned how to dodge its patterns. Most
likely, you'll have no time to be at a particular part of
the screen, so I can't give you move-and-forget tactics.
For the first wave, just move left. For the second wave,
you can find openings created by the third and fourth
rings. Move to the left to enter the larger opening. For
the third wave, tap the joystick to the left twice to
dodge that two-bullet clump. For the fourth wave, wait
until the bullet from the third wave leaves, then tap
once to the left. You'll enter a lane which you can move
up and finish off the blue statue before it leaves.
I recommend you do this only if you're way out of
position to destroy it with your yo-yo or if your charge
meter isn't up to Lv. 2. Otherwise, it's safer to smash
it.

This was a pretty good game overall. Though I didn't beat it (I got up to the red form of the mid-boss), I chained well enough to earn the extend at those left-to-right orange guys in 1-5, and I learned how to dodge that second screen-filling burst by the 1-5 boss. (my friend totally freaked out when he saw me dodge it :cool: ) And although I am sure I will probably die at least once at the 1-6 boss, I no longer fear it (too much). I still have to work on being able to dodge and stop in time, while destroying the left... uh, thing.

I think I've got my bomb distribution and stuff all figured out:

Kinda wasteful, but I still lose at least one life in 1-6, so I'm not taking any chances. I also power down right as I deliver the finishing blow.[*]1-6 statues: Even though the lower-left (green) statue's pattern is easy enough to dodge, I'm still going to use the yo-yo if and only if it is the first statue. I realized I'm not going to be able to reach the top statues otherwise.[*]1-6 boss (first form): I'm not going to copy the videos exactly (!!!) - when the right blue spinny thing fires that spiral wave, I'm just going to attack the boss directly, since I always, always get hit by those stray bullets at the end.[*]1-6 boss (second form): I absolutely need to have at least 1 bomb for the 2nd form (dying at the first form would be okay I guess). You can widen the gap between these waves by moving to the

Most definitely! Almost everyday, I make it a habit of playing two games, just in case I make some stupid mistake (though if I do well enough on my first try, I come back at lunch and wait for the crowds to form :evil: ). Luckily, my marathon gaming sessions at home have eliminated virtually all of them (you wouldn't believe how long I had to bomb at that last part of the battle ship boss in 1-3!), and I can only play better at the arcade, so that's good.
The arcade actually has a lot of shooters, some of which I don't remember:
DoDonPachi (25 cents)
Zero Gunner (25 cents)
Zero Gunner 2 (75 cents!!! :mad: )
and some Raiden and Strikers games, and at least two I've never even heard of. However, it's always Marvel VS Capcom 2 and that new Initial D game that draw the crowds, but Gunbird 2 is by far the most played, so I'm just going to stick to that (plus I got totally rocked when I tried DoDonPachi). It's too bad the 2nd player stick is unusable - you can't even move down! I also had to envision breaking wooden boards with a Karate chop to be able to bomb for a while... :sweat:

Your commentary about Alucard irked me, though. The Bat
Drill's shortcomings can be overcome easily, because the
large enemies take too long to do anything threatening.
Many of the large enemies refuse to fire for a long time,
and bosses usually have safe spots close to them or leave
their most threatening attacks until the end of their
pattern cycle. Once this is realized, the Bat Drill's
short range and long recovery time no longer become a
problem, because it's still powerful enough to eliminate
these threats. Once they're eliminated, there's still
plenty of space and time for Alucard to move away to
safety. And in the second loop, Alucard's speed can whisk
me away to safety very quickly, before the nearby little
guys and their random messes of bullets get to me.
As for Valpiro, I find that the Atomic Punch doesn't make
up for his slow speed--I rarely use it because his shot is
wide and powerful enough to destroy the lesser enemies
anyway. But is Valpiro Punch does make it up for the same
reasoning I gave for the Bat Drill--it eliminates threats
before they become problems. He's good for the first loop
because of this.
But I'll agree with you on this: he's best left for the
maniacs who want to clear the second loop. Unlike Alucard,
he's too slow to evade the random bullet mess from nearby
smaller enemies.
I'm probably underestimating Marion's strengths, so Triple
Lei, I hope your capture guide can expose this for me.
So-so scoring game, but I still beat it. Yay.

Well, I'll probably end up re-typing this on my page, but Alucard's weak strength in general (IMO!) is just a huge setback. With Marion, if I attack closer to the enemy, I can fire the sub shots much faster, destryoing the enemy faster - just like almost every other shooter I've played. I don't experience this phenomenon with Alucard or anyone else, and if I have to eke out one more close attack to destroy an enemy I would have otherwise destroyed with close regular shooting... well, yuck. :o I think I do use the yo-yo pretty often, so I'm just going to stick to this... :confused:Quote:

I learned to play Gunbird 2 by eliminating threats right

The confidence boost of beating it once really helps.

I can collect from that gemhead with pretty consistent results, by virtue of the fact that I don't use the safe spot for dodging the subsequent attacks. I know I should, but I had developed a very different dodge before I ever learned about the safe spot, and old habits are hard to break. In any case, I do back-and-forth sweeps of most of the screen width, with a slight pause near the middle, about a quarter of the way up the screen. Not an elegant dodge, but easy enough to execute, and it means I can be out of position from gem collection when the waves of enemies start firing.Quote:

You can take advantage of the first two turrets' poor aim.
Stay near the bottom of the screen and when those turrets
arrive, move up. Their first volley of bullets should pass
under you. Now you have more space to grab a few more gems
without allowing those turrets to re-aim. Dodge the next
set of bullets and move to the safe spot.
There is a way to deal with those sentry heads that follow
the turrets. Smash the middle head with your yo-yo, and
again on the left one. Move down to avoid the bullets from
the right head.

walker? And how often can you get it before the walker
arrives? I would destroy the first two walkers with two
yo-yos, but sometimes, I lack enough charge to destroy the
third with the yo-yo. And Marion barely has enough range

100% Mode7 tactics for the 1-4 boss of course (is there any other way? :cool: ), making sure to Power Down only once. Power Down twice and you're not totally screwed, but it's just a lot harder since you'll have to shoot that red weapon carrier for the Power Up without Powering Down again, and before it shoots at you!
I think I got the new gem collect path down, even though died in the video... :mad:
On another note, I finally found the ideal settings for my DivX videos! I just went to this FAQ which I found in this thread. The new video I made is about 5 megs @ 1 min & 13 secs, while the old one was about 5 megs @ 23 secs! (and yeah I rotated the video this time around :lol: )

Well, I'd be lying if I said I can pull it off 100%, but it's still easier than dodging. It's sort of instinctual, but you can see how low the wing goes once while you go up there, so keep your eye on that spot. Also, the hiding spot is not that small; although I've never tried it, I'm sure you can just tap down as you need to and still avoid it... :confused:Quote:

Not a whole lot to say other than I'm still getting schooled by this game and can't seem to pass 1-4 without going bomb crazy. I just can't dodge that Bird boss and his crazy bullet patterns when I use anyone but Aine. However, when I'm using Aine I can't get close enough to do a sword attack and his arrows are very hard to aim when your busy dodging a hailstorm of bullets.
So, I'm thinking about switching over to Morrigan because of her homing lasers, small size, fast speed and solid close range attack.
