MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) -- Nokia unveiled seven new mobile devices on Monday, including one that doubles as a game console, as it takes aim at the traditional games industry.

The phone models unveiled, most with color screen displays, cater to various consumer segments including the fashion conscious and work on the popular GSM mobile system, which predominates in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Nokia announced at a mobile Internet conference in Munich the Nokia N-Gage -- its first mobile phone that also acts as a console for consumers to play quality games, which are stored and distributed on memory cards, on a color screen.

The device can be seen as a direct challenge to handheld game consoles from the likes of Nintendo and the games market hotly contested by Sony, Microsoft and others. It will be introduced in February 2003.

"Nokia will bring mobility to the games industry by offering console-quality games for a new mobile game deck product category," the Finnish company said in a statement.

Nokia is dominant player
Nokia mobile phone launches are closely watched because of the company's dominant position in the wireless industry, supplying over a third of all phones sold to consumers worldwide.

Shares in Nokia were largely unmoved by the announcement as investors had already traded up the stock on anticipation the world's largest mobile phone maker would announce several new models. At 1225 GMT Nokia was up 5.4 percent at 17.41 euros, roughly in line with European peers.

The company unveiled the 6800 model, which comes with a color display, supports so-called multimedia messaging service (MMS) and Java technology and has a cover that opens up into a full keyboard. It will be shipped to the European, African and Asian markets in the first quarter of next year.

The 7250 color screen fashion phone with a built-in digital camera will also be shipped in the first quarter as will the 5100, the 8910i and the 2100, Nokia said at its annual mobile Internet conference, this time held in Munich.

Nokia will start shipping the 6100 model, also with a color display, by year-end 2002.

Well if it has decent support (Sega-Mobile *ahem*) and is at least as powerful or moreso than GBA, I'm definitely picking one up, though I'm a sucker for new systems. I wouldn't be surprised if MS or Sony announce alignment with this thing either...

the 7250 looks lovely..comes out december stateside..i dont know if i want to fork over $250-$300+ for the phone

Definitely interesting, but I may have to wait and see if the system gets decent software support before I get excited.

everyone wants one, but i doubt anyone would want to fork over $300+ for it..dont forget, not only is it a supposed "handheld" but its a cell phone too

Also, it looks like it could be about the size of that crazy Qualcomm "shoe-phone" -- a Palm PDA phone that was larger than some of the earlier Palm PDAs themselves. No one liked it and it faded away into the realm of IT Dept. Gadget Closet Obscurity.

If it's no larger than the GBA and priced right (no more than $150) with lots of titles, it ought to be popular.

did they mention the third party support being about the same as that for the game.com?

like i said above..its also a cellphone..a color display cellphone alone..such as the sony ericsson t68i costs $250+ so imagine a phone and a handheld system put together..it wont cost $150. a color screen palm itself costs $200+

If you mean how you would dial, just look at the righthand side of the system, it has a full numeric keypad.

If you meant where are the mic and speaker, it looks like it has a minijack for a handsfree set, which I hope it does, because I can just imagine how you would look holding that thing to your face while talking. You'd get pants'd for sure.

Something like this would be perfect for me. I don't carry my GBA with my everywhere. (I don't actually carry it with me anywhere.) But I do carry around my cell phone.

This would be perfect for the down time.

I wonder if you could program the speed dial to accept Street Fighter motions, like fireball to call your buddy, or dp your girlfriend. (not THAT dp!)

While the company has certainly released cell-phones that play games, Nokia has revealed its latest wireless phone creation that focuses on the games market...potentially pushing the phone maker into Nintendo's GBA territory.

The phone is called the N-Gage. Nokia unveiled this new unit at the company's annual mobile Internet conference in Munich, Germany. The N-Gage is the company's first cell-phone that, so Nokia says, will allow owners to play "quality" games, with the ability to have multiplayer competitions via both Bluetooth and wide-area mobile phone networks.

The games for the N-Gage system will be distributed on memory cards...and Nokia said during this conference that it intends to become a games publisher. According to Nokia, Sega is already on board making games for the system, though it wasn't clear if the games would simply be the same cell-phone software already available, like Super Monkey Ball.

No details were revealed on the hardware capabilities of the N-Gage system, but Nokia did show off the system itself. It looks like it was definitely patterned after the Game Boy Advance's design, with the LCD screen sitting between the D-pad and action buttons. The buttons double as the controls for the phone's dialing interface.

There's just something about being able to make calls with my handheld thats offseting and that a phone company is making a gaming system. I do hope though that this pushes other gaming companies to make good handhelds or push nintendo to make better handhelds.

also, instead of people complaining about getting 2 face buttons, now we got 11+

Nintendo should have cracked into the GBA-phone market months ago... looks like they have competition now.

I think it looks silly, but then again I hate cellphones :p
