I constantly have people coming over to play 4P Goldeneye. The nostalgia is amazing. Perfect Dark is a great game, all though NO where near as grate as GE. Don't even think about MP PD, the frame rate will make your cry.
And, I love Elvis, from PD! Coolest game character, ever, exception of Oddjob.

Thanks! I picked Goldeneye to review because I'm in a James Bond hype filled world right now. The 007 dvds are being rereleased and TNN will be doing a Bond movie week starting the 19th. And of course Die Another Die hits theaters the 22nd and Nightfire is in development. I've got high hopes that Nightfire can build on everything GE did right. And I've been playing a lot of TimeSplitters2 and thought it was fitting.Quote:

I think there's a large dichotomy between opinions of "real" FPS fans who are also more likely to be PC gamers, and people like me who really see nothing good about Doom III and UT2003 coming out other than pretty graphics and who prefer the majority of their gaming on consoles. I've never been much for the Quakes/Dooms/Unreals of the gaming world. I liked Medal of Honor on PSX, but haven't yet touched one of it sequels. And I liked Red Faction a lot, but won't be playing Red Faction 2. I don't have an Xbox, so I obviously haven't played Halo, but I think I'd probably like it.
As for Goldeneye being way overrated, to each his own, but I think it had a huge effect on the direction of most FPS's to come out afterwards. Sure, the A.I. was weak and there were small bugs to exploit, but for my money though, GE's strengths and innovations far outweighed its weaknesses.
The other impetus for writing the review was to see if I could get away with writing a really looooooong review without complaints from people. Hopefully I succeeded in not boring anyone to death.:)

There's much more then pretty graphics for why so many consider PC FPS' the only way to go, but the improved graphics will help your abilities as well.
Doom III... let's not get started on the spooging effect that game has on me. Let's put it this way: I was playing it at 4 fps, and it still managed to freak me out. I can now see why people compare it to RE, only this is actually an incredible game, whereas RE is hampered by control, cameras, menus, stupid fetch-quests, and so on.
Right, and I understand pc players reasonings for it. But for me the gameplay stinks no matter how fluid it runs, how pretty it is, how many players you can have online at the same time, or how well it controls with a mouse and keyboard. It's boring as hell to me. No depth as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a kill first ask questions later kind of player. I enjoy the sneaking MORE than the firing.Quote:

Out of curiousity, have you ever played team-based objective PC FPS', like Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, or the newly released Natural Selection? These, while based upon the high-impact death of usual, offer a far different feel.
Very silly statement for you to make. There are many first person shooters on the PC which are in fact more about "sneaking" than even your precious Goldeneye. For example in NOLF you can't even destroy the cameras because that would alert the guards (doesnt that make sense? If cameras start being destroyed wouldn't that arouse suspicion). Besides Goldeneye is not really THAT stealth-focused. I remember when I played it I went in guns blazing many a time. I always thought the stealth thing was very exaggerated in reviews compared to the actual game.Quote:

You remind me of a person I know who says that FPS games haven't evolved significantly since Quake, while he hasn't touched a single one since 1997. The reality of the situation is that FPS games have evolved A GREAT DEAL since Goldeneye and the new ones offer a LOT more than Goldeneye ever did. They offer a lot more than Half-Life (a 1998 release) does too. In fact, Goldeneye is so crude compared to the new ones it might as well be Doom. You're doing the creators of the games and the games themselves an injustice by writing them off because they're not Goldeneye.
Did someone say PC FPS games lack depth?
That is about the most ironically ignorant thing anyone could say about the genre.

1) I totally agree that Goldeneye has aged and been outdone in some areas. And I understand that there are plenty of games on pc that involve the same characteristic gameplay elements. BUT: a) Goldeneye was the torch bearer for that kind of gameplay in FPS's, and b) I don't much care for pc gaming. Period. Just a preference on my part and a choice I feel free to make.
2) I am not a FPS fan. Not really. I admit that freely. Never liked 'em much. I guess you could say that I never considered GE a true FPS because of all the adventure elements. Even though it takes place in FPS POV and involves plenty of shooting. But that's semantics, and it *is* an FPS, which I just haven't found a good follow up to on a console.
3) Nothing I've PLAYED has outdone GE. Heavy on the word PLAYED. And not being a pc gamer, I doubt that I will find the thrill anytime soon. But to be perfectly fair, I saw NOLF at EB for $13.99 and am considering picking it up to play at my girlfriend's place, just to see if I can overcome my dislike of sitting at a computer to play a game. We'll see.
4) The reason I referenced mostly games that were old was to try to keep GE in context of its time period. Not to do a disservice to the makers of today's FPS's. There are vast areas for opportunities of improvement in GE, but only in retrospect. Hindsight is 20/20. Just because games are coming out now that you feel kick GE's ass, it's a bit of an unfair comparison. I could say that Virtua Fighter 4 is totally better than Street Fighter 2. Would that be fair?
I could even say you are doing a disservice to Rare for what they were able to do on somewhat weak hardware compared to the average gaming pc rig. The reason I can say GE is to me still the Gold Standard for console first person shooters is because it was the innovator that so many have been copying since. And in my review, I really was talking about Console FPS's even when mentioning HL.
To answer the question about tactical team-based FPS's on pc's, no, I have not played them. I think I could see getting quite a kick out of them though. The strategies involved and such. But I'm not into online gaming and, as mentioned pc gaming. I live in a rural area that does not offer good on-line options for me and as stated, I have a crappy pc. However, I've never been intrigued enough by online gaming to take the necessary steps to make it happen for me either. It just doesn't really interest me. I can't really explain why.
Oh, and that remark about depth was targeted at Doom III and Unreal2003. Not pc FPS's on the whole. I said that those titles don't excite me in the least because all I see when I read about them is prettier graphics. I'm sorry if that offends you guys, but it's true. I don't see a game with depth when I think of those titles, sorry.
But please, by all means keep the personal remarks about me coming. I'm just stupid ya know. Duhuhhhhhhhhh...:rolleyes:

The review is good but I would change the parts where it mentions MGS and Zelda since they weren't out at the time. Maybe put Final Fantasy VII in their place.
