DVD players: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Any of you have personal favorite brands/features/ect. on DVD players? So far the Samsung seems great except it's running through the VCR part to my tv (My tv doesn't have av inputs let alone component input) so sometimes a color will pixelate for a second after a quickcut. Once I get a nice flatscreen tv with component input it should look beautiful, I'm very happy with it so far. It doesn't have progressive scan, but HDTV's are so expensive and to really get the most out of progressive scan you need a big HDTV. For a 27 inch or so tv you can't really beat flatscreen wega component video, so this DVD player is fine for me. If anyone has had good or bad experiences with Samsung players post your thoughts, or anything else related to dvds/players post your thoughts. Let's get this thread so damn big that a DVD forum is created!

I want to get my Panasonic RP-62 region modded, anyone know a place? I've looked at JVB digital and thats it.

The Samsung is a good player, don't worry.

Green: Wouldn't it be cheaper and more reliable to just import a japanese region DVD player? Or do you want more than just Region 2?

BTW Unforgiven 10 year anniversary edition is coming I hear, much better transfer quality than the original DVD and TONS of special features! Also special editions of Xmen and Black Hawk Down coming so hold off on buying those if you're considering it as I was.

Want region 3 as well.

Just get Region Free JVC, Malaata or Javon. I heard only good things about these players, they are Region Free, Provide Perfect Pal conversion, Progressive Scan and lots of other options.

Also for cheap solution, Get Daewoo 5700/5800 that has not bad quality, becomes region free few button presses on remote, and only about $80-90. I have one, and its a very nice cheap solution. But if you want more high end, then go with the brands I mentioned before.

I have Toshiba Nuon on my main tv, but its not Region Free :( nor it Progressive Scan :(, since I bought it 2 years ago.

Samsung you got should be a normal player, so dont worry.

another thing, do those remote control region hacks really work?

Yeah, They do work on some of the models. On others you need to update firmware with cd.

Panasonic makes the best DVD players in the comsumer price range (limit 300 bucks). The Rp-62 and RP-82 (both progressive scan plays) have great de-interlacing chipsets from Sage/Fadorja (essential if you buy interlaced DVDs like anime and TV titles).
