Sony's War of the Monsters

As if R.A.D. isn't enough when it comes to oversized behemoths beating the stuffin' out of each other in major metropolitan areas, Sony's Incog is working on this little gem. I haven't heard much about this game (it's not due til January), but it looks great... more like a modern King of the Monsters than anything. Here's some shots...

The character designs are really appealing to me; I like that exaggerated look they have. Anyone know anything more about the game?

Looks really cool, need to buy R.A.D first but this looks just as good. The design of the mech I don't like TOO much but it'll grow on me, looks kind of like the old japanese mech design. Monsters look real cool though.

I read in GI it definitely has a "retro" feel in the cinemas and such. Yeah, the robot reminds me of Gigantor or something..

it's done by incog so i will definetly give it a look...but i'm sure my impressions won't stand up to my initial reaction of playing king of monsters for the neo back it the day...made me want to get a job...then i relized i would have to deliever papers for a month just to buy the game, and then another 3 months for the system...
i did end up getting a paper route...and blew my first months pay on a sega cd however...FMV how i lothed tee...

Makes me think of what a 3D King of the Monsters would look like.

Why isn't anyone talking about this game?

There's a playable demo and full review in this month's OPM. This game looks un-freaking-believable! It's developed by the same people who did Twisted Metal: Black. The presentation is superb, the framerate is 60 fps, there's tons of destructible stuff to pick up and throw your opponent into, and a bunch of cool monsters to use. It's a little hard to get a hang of the camera, but so far this game looks like a must-buy. The game received five stars (or discs?) in the review.

When does this one come out? I can't wait. This game is the second coming of Rampage.

I used to love King of the Monsters. One of my absolute favorite games. I love wrestling games and KotM is one of the very best, IMO.

The game is currently due to be released on 1/16/02. I can't wait to pick it up.

Green, I'll get RAD, anything to avoid the awesome eye powers of Frylock.

I think Frylock would much rather prefer giant praying manti(?), ape, dinosaur, and lava monster over the robots. Anyway, I just got the mag and tried out the demo. The whole cover story is about it. It has a totally 50's feel(option screens are on drive-in screens).

The combat is good with two attacks and a grab/grapple button. Each character has their own longrange projectile(which uses up an energy bar) and two special attacks. I think the normal game has 4 monsters going at it at one time but the version I had only had 2. One of the things I really liked were that the environments were totally destructible, although they can really take a beating. You can even grab a person and pummel them or chuck them at a skyscraper. And nothing beats trashing your opponent with a radio tower and as he runs away skewering him with it. I really can't wait for this game to come out.

Oh, Giant disembodied telekinetic eyeballs rule!!!

I just got the OPM demo. War of the Monsters is quite good. I love throwing cars at my opponent. The 1950's atmosphere reminds me of Invasion From Beyond on PS1 but WOTM is a much better game.

And off-topic but on the same demo disc, my first impression of Rygar is major disappointment. The camera angles blow and the combat is merely okay. The demo is way too short to give a full judgement though.

That game looks like CRAP!!!

Godzilla on the Cube looks to be better (havent played it yet).

I played the OPM demo too and it really rules, this Gozilla on Cube, and RAD will be the funnest monster brawlers in a long time.

Also not to mention the 2 player madness that can come from WOTM.

Incognito r0x0rs my s0x0rs. Twisted Metal Black was a really stunning car combat game that people wrote off for some weird reason, it delivered and then some after lousy efforts from Sony and other wannabes (didnt 3DO release something like that?). I figured even hardcore gamer types would like it because it was blasted hard, but still it was written off. Hopefully they will get the respect they deserve with War of the Monsters.

Just picked up OPM magazine and was checking out the demo disk and I stumbled on this game. Its made by Incog(TW:B) and is alot of fun. Kinda like Godzilla, except, its actually fun. Kinda reminds me of Powerstone in a way. Did anyone else try this game out yet?

Havn't played it yet, but previews i've read have made me interested in the game. It will probably be a game I buy when the price comes down a little bit.

I thought it was pretty cool. I expected it to be better though.

Nigel if you read the feature on OPM of WOTM it tells about more stuff like the complex combos and such. It's a hella neat game you have to play alot of times to really get into it. Plus it's only a demo so the full game likely kicks more ass.

I am certainly looking forward to the release of this game!

R.A.D. = Robot Alchemic Drive, a mech game from Enix.

diffusionx: I think TM: Black sold really well. I remember it was one of the first truly great PS2 games. Or at least that's what the reviews told me, since I didn't have a PS2 at the time and haven't played the game myself.

TM: B was also a greatest hits game, and later went on to be an online game, so I'm sure it did just fine. Speaking of which though, I STILL havent' got my free TM:B Online disc!!

Yeah, I was surprised I saw no threads for this game on TNL... I will pick this game up when it hits the 30 dollar mark (which it will).

Was just checking out some info on War of the Monsters today, and, after playing the demo, I'm very impressed with it and may make a purchase. An online mode would have put the game over-the-top, in my opinion, but it still delivers some nice 3D carnage -- in other words, fun. :)

How about you guys?

I'll get it when I see it for $35 in the next month, or for $20 in the next six months.

I was very impressed with the demo, but with orta coming out on the same day, I'll be waiting a while on this one.

For my fellow Canadians: FutureShop is selling the game for $59.99 (equivalent to a $39.99 game in the US). Great to see that the majority, if not all, first-party Sony games are keeping at a lower price-point.

Personally, I think this game looks very interesting. I will be writing a review for this very website.

I'm excited for it but between this, Panzer, Devil 2, DOAXBV, Xenosaga next month, and GBASP w/ Pokemon in March, I have a feeling I won't be getting around to WotM for a while.

War of the Monsters = PS2 Smash Bros. It's more of a party game than a serious brawler.

It definitely is a latter day King of the Monsters, although I'd have to say it plays better. Sending your opponent flying 100 yards is pretty cool, and the atmosphere is well done. Still, I don't even have Shinobi yet, so there are other things on my plate ahead of this puppy.

I look forward to seeing that review, Sleeveboy. I've yet to read a good review for the game.

All Sony games are $39.99 when they come out, it was announced months ago. The only game that didn't have that price-tag was SOCOMM, but that was because it came with the headset. I will get this game at full price, since $40 is well worth it for good party game action.

First of all, I'd recommend avoiding RAD at all costs. At the very least waiting until the price drops significantly. I bought that game for full price and it was one of the worst, most annoying, and most frustrating games I have bought in years. I posted a thread in the Reader Reviews section here at TNL for more info. :(

Anyway, as for WotM... I played the OPM demo and read the article. The graphics are nice. The concept is interesting. The gameplay was decent. I like the level of interaction with the levels.... but I don't think I'll be buying it. It just didn't grab me that much. I may reconsider in the distant future when the price drops to budget level though. ;)

I played RAD at a GameStop and wanted to shoot my self. Took forever just to get into a battle, and then the battle it self was such poor control and perspective I just wanted to set the store on fire.

The battles are not so bad once you get used to them. In fact, if you have a good vantage point and everything is just right they can be really great because of the great control scheme you have for controlling the mech. It's the best use I've ever seen for the Dual Shock controller..... But yeh, it takes forever and ever and ever just to get into the battles.. and half of the time you need to run to random dots on the map and listen to (or try to skip though as fast as you can) horrible cut scenes. Sucks the fun right out of the game. I returned my copy to EB. :(

Some guy at cgtalk did the models for the King Kong-like monster I think. Either that or he ripped it or it's a coincedence. I saw a commercial for this game and it looks really really fun.

I'm definitely renting it.

Went to a tournament at EB yesterady. NEVER played the game before and came in 2nd place. Needless to say, it doesnt take a long time to figure out.
