Anyone ever heard of the Cosmic Fantasy series? Part 2 came out for the Duo and was localized by Working Designs, I ordered a copy from them not to long ago. This series never gets much mention but from what I've read it's a solid RPG series. Anyone play the Japan only Cosmic Fantasy games?
Any fans?
I loved Cosmic Fatasy on my Turbo CD. I remember being amazed by all the cutscenes, music, and audio back in the day. Its also the first RPG where I actually liked all the characters. Especially since all the main characters seemed to carry over to the next game. Unfortunately, compaired to today's RPG standards the gameplay is extremely basic and battles have no animation other than flashes of light.
Its a shame that none of the other Cosmic Fantasies made it to america. I really would like to see all the storylines unfold.
Yeah, I ordered CF2 from WD last year and it is indeed very basic. Probably not worth the $30, except for collection purposes.
I remember seeing pictures of it in gamepro back in 92 or 93 and I wanted to play it BAD! I pretty much had a feeling it wouldn't age very well, and the comments here are starting to make me think I was right.
Playing through CF2 now is quite tedious, but then again, i find that to be the case with 90% of RPGS. Its still worth checking out too see the amazing stuff they did back when it was made. But if you ask me, Ys books 1&2 and Lord of Thunder are better showcases for the duo.
I truly loved CF2. In the game, it said CF3 is coming soon, but it never was localized :(. If I buy me another Duo, it will largely be for CF2 and Dragon Slayer. I truly wish that the CF series would be revamped and made into a collection on the next-gen systems.
The RPG genre is an evolutionary one so when a game in this category was produced is something to think about when talking about older titles. At the time, Cosmic Fantasy 2 showed me how a game can be used as a medium for telling a story and seeing tragedy in a game for the first time was very surprising.
There is a legend that WD had Cosmic Fantasy 3 translated and ready to produce but either them or TTi pulled the plug at the last minute.
I'm a big fan of the series and have played through most of them on the PC Engine. Too bad about CF3 never getting a US release because it's (IMO) the best in the series. Who knows, maybe it'll still see a translation yet. :sneak:
I believe Victor Ireland said it's around 90% complete. A few years back, he said that if there was enough interest, WD would release CF3, World Heroes and King of the Monsters 2 for the Duo. Maybe someone should start a petition? :pQuote:

I'd kill for an english version of CF3... Kill I say! Just point me toward someone to kill...
I will buy a Duo, CF2 and CF3 if Vic will release CF3.
Man, I stated playing this two whole years ago, and still haven't really bothered with getting anywhere. I just level up a few times every few months, and turn it off. I haven't even made it to a boss yet. I'm just not into playing RPGs.

I saw the Cosmic Fantasy Anime at MAGfest.
It blew.
I enjoyed this alot until my save file was corrupted and I'm not sure if I want to restart and level back up.
Great Anime scenes and Voice acting and some amazing character designs.
Don't have this one yet. I'll add it (and Dragon Slayer) to my want list at VGT. Right now, I'm more interested in getting action/adventure and shooting games for my Duo than RPGs.
I remember seeing brief footage of this game on the "Making of Lunar" PS1 disc (the first game). They were saying how they had to edit dude's hand in this cutscene 'cause he was giving the finger in the original Japanese version. Heh.
Dragon Slayer is a pretty cool little RPG, taking into account when it came out. I played it about 2 years ago, it had some good ideas in it that haven't been reused, like random battles becoming non-random halfway through and such. Don't remember what else it's got, but there were a few other things of note in it, although I can't remember a bit of the story.
Cosmic Fantasy 2, on the other hand, I didn't get very far into. I need to rewire my TurboDuo back up and give it another go. Yes, it's old and very basic by today's standards (first boss is impossible without leveling, and then is a cakewalk, etc.) but I'd still like to see it.
Ys 1+2, on the other hand, mystify me. Why on earth is this series so popular? I just don't get it.

Cosmic Fantasy 2 was great, one of the best Duo RPGs, and probably the first that really got me into the CD RPGs (It wasn't till Lunar came out a year later that I got pulled in for good). I really, greatly enjoyed it, and was immensely disappointed WD pulled the plug on 3 when it was all but finished, only because the Duo was...err...all but finished here in the States. :(
You're not alone in these opinions of Ys. I was very disappointed by 1 & 2 when I first played them last year, after seeing lots of people rave about them on this board (and elsewhere). I'm sure you've heard that Ys IV and V are much better than the first few installments, but it's unfortunate that they're not available in English.Quote:

I personally think Ys III is more fun than the first two, but the graphics are wicked ugly on the Turbo CD version, and although the visuals are a lot better, the SNES' soundtrack is crap compared to the CD.
The Genesis version of Ys 3 is better than the SNES version but I prefer it on Duo. The cut scenes were very cool back then ("adventure is in the spirit of the warrior, and the warrior....is you!) and the soundtrack is too fucking cool for words.
I think all the love for Ys I&II come from those who played them when they first came out. I remember the first time I saw the TG CD in action way back when. It was the intro to Ys 3 and I nearly jizzed myself. The dude showed me the other Ys games and I was hooked.
I still love them to death even though I can't play them because my Duo CD went all wonky on me.... :(
I'm not a big fan of Ys. The music in the SMS Ys impressed me. Then when the TGCD ones came out I was blown away by the cinemas and sound. But I never cared much for the gameplay.
I did play all the way through the Genesis version of Ys 3 but I can hardly remember the game now.
I didn't play Ys books 1 and 2 until about 18 months ago, and I like it very much. I have Ys 3, but I only played it once. I'll have to get around to it.
I like Cosmic Fantasy 2, but I'd never be able to sit through all those battles.
