The main differences are that the Engrish from the Japanese rev is fixed in the Euro version, thus making a bit more sense but being far less amusing.
Also, while I haven't played the PAL Euro rev I heard it has some glitches when run on US NTSC systems, while the Japanese NTSC version runs as it's supposed to.
The Euro version is a lot more common than the Japanese rev and routinely appears on eBay, typically going for less than a hundred. The Japanese version is much rarer and harder to find (at least here in the States) and probably only shows up once or twice a YEAR on that auction site, and will run you no less than $250.
Fortunately, there are people on the boards who live in Japan (Shidoshi, Seven Force, the latter of which hooked me up with my copy, thanks again Seven! :D) who may be able to get it for you cheaper. But if you can live with the glitch(es) in the Euro rev, you'll save some money by just getting that.
And, yes, it's worth every penny you'll pay for it. By far one of Treasure's best games :D
Yep, I have the Euro version. There's only one display problem for the first part of one of the last few levels ( right before WolfBlood Garopa ), and it's insignificant to me.
It's definitely one of Treasure's finest. Go for it.
Love it, probably my favourite game ever. If you're a fan of genre and want a challenge then it's essentiel. Definately worth the price it goes for and the European version only has a minor glitch as FighterX explained.
Make sure you play it before you spend all the money on it. (wink wink, nudge nudge)
I think its a pile of shit... don't buy it just because its "hardcore".
I would highly recommend it. It's an excellent game. If you have a way to play Euro games the European version is the best bet. Be aware though that the game had the lockout chip in it, so you have to know of a way around it, (personally I have a Super Key that I've had forever but they're nearly impossible to get now). As mentioned the only thing you'll miss out on in the Euro version is the Janglish, and there are a couple of very minor graphical glitches. But since the Japanese version always goes for alot (it goes for 18,000 to 20,000 yen in Japan on a regular basis) the Euro is a much more reasonable approach since you can usually find them for much less.
Definitely worth it. An unforgettable game experience not to be missed.
Coincidentally, I literally just finsihed playing this game when I saw this thread.
I think the game is a true masterpeice, but I can understand why some don't "get it". It's not until you develop some skll with it and get good at using all the moves together that you really can appreciate it. It's incredibly hard, and surprisingly long, so this one is going to take you a looooong time to master. It's as worth the money as any action game is, and probably the peak of the genre, at least in my book.
Just remember when you play the game... it's all about the warp and the reflect.
Alien Soldier is like the absurd culmination of the boss-centric gameplay seen in Contra Hard Corps. I'm not a big fan of it. I don't regret paying the big bucks, since I do like having it on my shelf, but it doesn't do much for me gameplay-wise.
Thanks for the responses.
Damn near everyone loves this game... Maybe I'm missing something.
Very possible, I wouldn't fault you for that. It's easy to miss the finer points. It wasn't until I saw it played compotently that I really understood it.Quote:

Alien Soldier is awesome. If you like Gunstar Heroes, you will probably like Alien Soldier.
I would say it's the second best import-only Genesis game. The first being Monster World IV.
I used to own the Japanese version of Alien Soldier, and I sold it on usenet for $35 about 6 years ago.
I guess I'm a idiot, but how was I to know then how much it would be worth now?

Agreed completely.Quote:

Is MW4 text intensive?
Not especially. The meat of the game is in platforming stages, and there's a walkthrough to keep you pointed in the right direction available at GameFAQs. Excellent game, by the way.Quote:

It's interesting...MWIV has been very expensive in Japan for a while (like $100+ expensive), at the same time, its value in the US didn't come close to matching the price in Japan. Hell, I got my copy for $20, and I saw several go on ebay for that price. But now, by means of hype or simply perceived value, people have been paying more and more for it on ebay. The last copy that went up sold for $89, which is rather ridiculous - this game is great, but it's not worth THAT much.
moreso than previous games in the series, but not so much as to be prohibitave. Still, I'd recomend playing Demi's translation hack. It's quite good, and the game's more enjoyable that wat.Quote:

Isn't this one of those Wonderboy games? I recently bought the TGCD version of Monster Lair, and I like it a lot. I've also played Dragon's Curse and Wonderboy in Monsterland, both of which are truly charming games. Does MW4 have a PCE version? If so, I want it.
As for Alien Solder, I uh... tried it out... but since I couldn't change the default control scheme, it was unplayable to me. Don't think I'll ever be paying $250 for a game that I can't control.
The "Wonder Boy" and "Monster World" series are technically separate, even though there are titles that share both names, though I'm not familiar with all the intricacies of the two series. I think MWIV is a full Monster World title, though, and there isn't a PCE version. I don't think Westone was involved in the development of MWIV at all, as their only credit in it is for the original game, (c) 1989, while MWIV came out in '94.
Alien Soldier is awesome. It just had a steep learning curve. IN fact, even after I beat the game, I still didn't feel like I mastered the controls yet. It took a few more times through. Graphically it is one of the best Genesis/Megadrive titles, lots of cool special effects.
Monsterworld 4 is excellent as well. :)
Hm I'm afraid I got some pirate version of the JP one, is there supposed to be two freaks on the cover and lots of pictures on the back? The cart has five pics and the bird on it, a little help would be most appreciated.
Here is a small picture (I'll try and find a bigger one, or just scan my copy)..Quote:

On the back of the box, the top half is a picture of your character doing the PyroPort (The flaming teleport you do when your life bar is full and flashing). The bottom half then has pictures from the game.
Ah crap mine looks nothing like that, well I'll have to see if it works, good thing I didn't spend a fortune on it (9$).
