PC Games more Addicting than Console Games?

Prelude to the post:
I got a new computer a few days ago, 2ghz, 256MB RAM, some sort of weak GeForce 4. Nothing special, but a big step up for me - I've been using the same computer for the last four years. I used to really be into PC gaming, but over the past two or three years (basically since the Dreamcast really got into gear) I've been playing console games almost exclusively. I got tired of upgrading, patching, it was more fun to buy DC games, dunno why exactly.

Anyways, one of the games that had been thrown in with the cheap GeForce was No One Lives Forever, great game, so on. It's one I'd been meaning to buy for a long time. Turned up the difficulty, got going.

Anyways, I ended up playing the game for about 5 hours in a row, which is absurd for me (I don't really ever play for that long and concentrated of a period). Started thinking about it, and I realized that the last time I played a game for 4+ hours in a row, it was when I was still playing PC games. I can't play console games like that, my attention just doesn't hold, or something.

Anyone else like that, notice a similarity? I like consoles, but it seems like PC games have a capability to catch hold of me beyond that of most any console games. Maybe you feel the opposite way - you can play a console game for hours, but an hour's about all you can take with a PC.

I do find PC games more addicting for two reasons:

1) When playing on a console, I'm practically supine and far too relaxed, so my mind tends to wander and I think of other things to do. Since my mind is mostly unchallenged, I tend to quit playing.

2) PC games have a better pacing and sense of speed thanks to the mouse, whose fluid control are capable of moving games at a faster pace so I'm drawn in much easier. Since I'm sitting in an upright position with attention focused, I'm usually convinced to play a little longer.

I'm the same way. I rarely play any console game for more than an hour at a time, RPG or not. However, with PC games, be it FPS or RPG, I'll get sucked in immediately and I'll play for many hours at a time until the game is finished. Even then, sometimes I'll feel like going back through (though that hasn't happened yet). PC games are just so much more immersive for me, and they give me a lot more to think about and play with (in general) than console games. Aside from strategy games (and even with those sometimes), console games tend to be much less involving experiences, in my experience (heh).

I cannot play extended amounts of time on PC games because the keyboard/mouse hurts my wrists and hands. I wouldn't say I have Carpals Tunnels, but playing the PC too long makes me hurt!

But to be on topic, I would say PC games have tons of replya value since most of them are long RPGs, or FPS you can play over and over, or they are online games (CS, WC3, etc) that you have to play for a long time to get really good at.

I can't really say one is more addicting than the other. It's always just depended on the game itself.

I fined myself playing pc games longer then console games, I do own all the new systems, I just like working with the mouse, and you can play online, download new stuff for the game etc. Also my PC is upstairs which is more convenient then going down into the basement to the big screen where my consoles live. BTW if you want a sweet game go buy Age of mythology for PC bestest game out! :)

Yeah, I'd say PC games are on the whole far more addicting than console games. That's partly the reason I don't play them anymore. X-Com, Civilization, Starcraft...I could spend 4+ hours on any of those games in one sitting.

I much prefer sitting down with a console game for 30-60 minutes and then doing something else. It's much easier to do that with console games.

I think thats because flat out a lot of PC games are better than console games. Cease comparing genres ("FPS on PC is better than on console but...") and all that and you end up with a lot of PC games which are just plain more fun than console ones.

If you think NOLF is addictive (and it certainly is), wait until you try stuff like CounterStrike, TFC, and Civilization II/III. There has never been a console game more addictive than any of those three. Outside of fighting games, there is no genre which is not covered by some absolutely class PC game (RPG? Neverwinter. Strategy/Action? Freedom Force, and etc.). And keep in mind when there is a game which spans consoles and the PC, 90% of the time the PC version is the best.

I started playing videogames maybe... 14 or 15 years ago. I didnt really get into PC games until maybe five years ago. But, since that time, I have generally found PC games to be a cut above console ones at any given moment. I suppose its arguable if this is the case now, especially with Xbox Live bringing some major enhancements to the online gaming arena, but for the most part this is the truth.

I used to be an exclusive PC-only gamer, back in the days when PCs = Apple 2s.

Then I started console gaming when NES became popular, but now, I no longer find console games to be as fun or addicting as they used to be in the 2D days.

So now, I'm back to being a PC gamer.

First of all, Stone, our stories are stangely similar. Well, minus the part about the new PC. I think the reason the DC really caught my attention (aside from the obvious price point and hassle advantages) was the sheer number of outstanding fighters, shmups, and arcade style stuff that it offered, which the PC is sorely lacking. I got sucked back into consoles hard this generation, and I've only just begun to look back after about two and a half years. I've always felt that console stuff, for the most part, has a certain charm (can't put my finger on it- but who the hell is Gordon Freeman other than some asshole who showed up late for work?) that seems to be largely absent with PC games. Despite that, I could always spend hours at a time clicking away at Diablo (or the sequal), even after I decided that it was a relatively bland and tedious game. I'm currently trying to play through the first Suikoden, and even though I think I probably like the game better than I ever did Diablo I will seriously start to nod off if I play for more than an hour or so. Weird shit. Maybe its because most of my gaming time these days follows a twelve hour work shift whereas I had a lot more free time a few years ago. I can still spend several hours at a time playing console stuff, but it usually involves company (mostly for fighting games). But I do agree that sitting upright (and close to the action no less) with a mouse in your hand is somehow more involving than lounging on the couch across the room from a TV gripping a gamepad. The pacing is most certainly different for most software between the two, but one thing I've noticed is that you almost have to go out of your way to purchase a weak PC title. I can stroll into Walmart and buy a shitty console game any day of the week, but 90% of the PC software they carry in a place like that I've at least heard of. Maybe large non-specialty retailers just have to be more selective with what they carry in regards to PC titles due to the fact that shelfspace is more of an issue (at least until the recent trend towards smaller boxes- but the practice is most likely deeply ingrained at this point). I've seen plenty of bad press on off the wall PC titles, you just never see that junk for sale antwhere until they bundle it with nine others, sling it for $15.00 and call it a deal. I guess we all just know better than to jump on that ship...

... if NOLF addicted you that much, just wait until you see Counter-Strike

My longest gaming sessions tend to be PC games as well, but it has more to do with the kind of games. My longest gaming sessions are usually PC strategy games like Civ 2, Europa Universalis, Pharoah, etc... It's just the nature of those games that can go on forever I think...

I can get just as addicted to console games though.. maybe even more so, generally speaking.

I'd say it's good to have the variety of different kinds of games to play. I find PC games a nice change of pace, even if I generally prefer the console.

yea...PC games are crazy-addictive. Ive never been that big on them, but when I have a new one...well i dont stop playing. Classic examples are : wolfenstein 3-d, doom, CIV2!!!!, starcraft and diablo. I want to get some more and i think next will be WC3, but now its time for some Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Peace.

One thing that I think accounts for the addictiveness of PC games is the ability to save whenever you want. It makes it so no matter how difficult the game is you can always squeeze a little further.

I'm just the opposite, I hate PC gaming because of the nature of it, consoles are just more fun to play with, I can relax more while playing a console, ect. There have been PC games that held my attention for hours on end (mostly RTS games and Doom) but it's not at all unusual for me to play a console game for hours on end, it's actually common. When I get a new console game that I really like I almost exclusively play it in multi hour bursts. The thing that bothers me most about PC gaming is the patch mentality, that developers commonly release unfinished games and then patches to fix them later. Unacceptable.

It's better than releasing unfinished games with no fix available, like many console developers.

Worst offender I can think of in recent memory is Morrowind.

I totally disagree with the idea that PC games are inherently more addictive than console games due to their setup. I honestly dispise the keyboard/mouse hook-up and prefer to sit in front of a television instead of monitor. Also, certain console games have extremely addictive qualities to them (Tetris, Street Fighter) to me, at least.

On the other hand, a lot of my binge gaming experiences have been with the PC. Hours go by after playing any of the civilization games. Or C&C. Or those point and click adventure games. I will spend five hours average on a PC game but an hour on a console game.

This doesn't make sense; console games don't allow you to save anywhere, so sparodic play wouldn't necessarily pay off.

Eheh, nah, I used to play Counter-strike, when it first came out (it was one of the last games I was into before I stopped playing PC games entirely). It's good, but, right now I'm just happy to play NOLF's single player mode...so good. The humor is good, the challenge is great, amazing textures and frame rate...the cinematics are way too long (the pacing could use some help), but the content is neat.

Yes. It all depends on the game, really. I've had as many "binge" sessions of VOOT as I have LAN sessions of Quake 3.

While I do play PC games more often than console games I cant really say whether PC games in general are more addicting than console games..or vice versa.

I guess it depends on the genre.. I do think FPS's, STR, RPG's and certain Driving simulations can be ridiculously addicting on the PC.
No One Lives Forever is a good example, Deus Ex is a another good one.

PC Rpg's are also far more engrossing in my opinion over console rpg's.. they typically have far more depth in their gameplay and with the addition of great mods and addons RPG's such as Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights..etc.. have incredible replay value even after you finish the game which can never be said about a console rpg.

I agree on the comment that games that start on PC are better on PC and vice versa.. there aren't too many exceptions to that.. some I could think of are Fur Fighters (which looks fantastic on pc..bump mapping..32bit textures..etc..great stuff), Spiderman (movie) looks great on PC and Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed is phenomenal on PC.

As for the comment on patches.. well.. I have over 50 PC games and NOT ONE gave me any issues..and its not exactly hard work to download and install a patch. Also, I can understand how people say its too expensive to constantly ungrade.. but if you make the right choices when it comes to hardware purchases you typically wont have to upgrade for maybe 2 or 3 years.. which it slowly turning into the typical lifespan for a console these days and you usually only have to upgrade either the video card or add RAM.

I refuse to say which is better cause I love both PC and console games, but I do find PC games a bit more addicting..but thats cause I'm a PC FPS and RPG fan.

I agree with the comfort level of play - I like lying on the couch to play a game. I work all day at a computer, I don't always want to come home and spend the night on one (like now :-) ).

That said, for FPS, I do prefer keyboard/mouse over gamepad. For platformers and action games I prefer the game pad. For RPG's, console games don't provide me enough options, so I prefer PC games. Sports I prefer the console. So I guess it all depends on the game.

The biggest reason - to me - that PC games can get more addictive is that they can be extended (where console games can't). Once I finish the main campaign for Freedom Force (for example), I can download three mods and play them. PC games with mod creators allow me to play them longer than just the retail release - and for that reason I like some PC games much better (for example Morrowind).

I guess there is no easy answer to this question...

Whether PC games are more "addicting" than console games is a bad question. It all depends on what kind of game it is, and its quality.

But I think that overall, PC games are BETTER than console games.

Opa-opa: well, obviously... I'm not suggesting that I could play MDK2 for an hour or so, and Cabela's Big Game Hunter for 4 hours (purely because the latter is a PC game.)

If people are responding affirmatively to this thread, do you think it just has to do with PC games being better on average than console games? Does it have to do with the specific genres that the PC specializes in: PC FPSs, PC RPGs, so on? Or, is it more about the environment - being alone in front of a monitor with a keyboard and a mouse vs. sitting on a couch with a gamepad and a TV?

"Addicting" wasn't really the right word for the thread's topic, but "Does the PC facilitate longer play sessions than Consoles, and if so why?" is a bit wordy, I think.

Considering that 90% of console games these days are catered towards attention-deficient 17 yr old skate-boarding teenagers, I would say yes.

IMHO on average, PC games are just designed to offer more depth and longer gameplay time than the average console game.

The average PC RPG is longer, has more areas, more characters, a deeper storyline, than the average console RPG.

The average PC action game has more stages, more weapons, more enemies, than an average console action game.

This is fact.

When I 1st got my PC, I had Unreal Tourn., Quake 2, Drakan, Kingpin, Unreal, then I later got a couple more, including Black and White. None held my attention especially long, and all though I've tried the occasional game since (Warcraft something or other, some more FPSers, I have decided PC gaming is boring, pretty much the only genres PC's are good for are fps, rts, sims, and none of those are particularly fun. I dug B&W a few days, but really, that's it. Nothing came close to getting me hooked or giving me a reason to not just play on consoles. Besides, the one of the 3 genres that can be ok (FPSers) on occasion, I prefer a gamepad for anyways. I've spent more time playing GBA roms than any actual PC game. Consoles will forever be my way of gaming, hours on end.

Have you tried Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Age of Empires, NOLF, Battlefield 1942, or Neverwinter Nights?

NOLF and Neverwinter Nights, yes. They were ok, but I'd rather play them on a TV with a Xbox pad... :/ Like I will be with BF1942... ;) If Starcraft is like Warcraft, I hate it... a lot.

Well, since I hate PC games with a violent passion, I'd say no for me. I honestly don't see how anyone would/could enjoy those shitty strategy games with 400 little "orcs" and whatnot all over the screen. Then again I don't understand how people can possibly like a lot of the things that they do.
The only PC games I ever liked were all the Lucasarts adventures (2d) and The Neverhood. And Cho Ren Sha. ;]

Mods are always great. Nothing breathes life back into a game like a good mod. CS, quite possibly the most-played game on the net in recent years, was not even a full game, it was a user-made full conversion mod for HL. Quake 3, as is, is very good but not clearly the best, until you add some mods to it. Akimbo is one of the smallest mods ever that adds so much crazy action it's insane. Or how about Bid For Power, which while not the greatest game in the world, is still the best DBZ game out. And it's nothing more then a user-made mod for Q3.

In regards to patches:

Many developers use them as a crutch, but just as many use them to improve a game. Take Raven and JKII for example: They released a number of patches that did jack squat for the regular game, and simply retooled and balanced the multiplayer. It took them a few times (mainly because every time they thought they covered something, the community would figure out how to exploit it), but it shows something that can't be done with console games. Many FPS' do this, a continuous tweaking so as to help balance.

There is more variety in PC gaming than the surface view will tell you. Conversely, many PC gamers think console gaming is nothing but sports and fighting games because this is all they see at surface level.

If a game is good, I'll be there. I'll play it regardless of the platform that its on. With all the talk about console wars, people tend to be quick to put down one gaming platform for another. The PC is just as viable as the PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, etc. All I care about is is having fun and entertaining games. I don't care about one game being better than another or or some hardware being the strongest out there. All I know is that I want to play all the good games out there.

No, it's a sign that the gamer doesn't like what he sees on the PC game shelf, and never has. And out of the PC genres (strategy, MMMMOORPG, FPS, FPS, and FPS, I don't see anything I'd want to play. It has nothing to do with hating PC games for the sake of being cool; it has everything to do with hating the games I see released for it. If there was something I wanted to play I'd buy it.

For platformers, definately check out Abuse (possibly the only 2D platformer designed with the mouse in mind, and it works beautifully) and Zyclunt (interesting, though not wonderful).

In regards to run 'n gun, does the type count (i.e. third-person, side-scroller, etc.)? Mafia fits that quite well.

Japanese-style RPGs is an area definately lacking on the PC. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Septerra Core, but I didn't play too far because of the hideous pre-rendered graphics. Then there's the more action-based Silver, but that also ended up on DC later on.

For shooters, there's way more then I could possibly mention. I'm sure you've seen the large freeware shooter site posted on here before, and quite a few others floating around.

Amazing colors and design? I'll have to search a bit (and that's a bit vague), but I'm sure I can find at least some to your liking, although Blade Runner is an excellent game with both of those. Have you ever tried Gridrunner?

Aside from shooters, the PC is a bit sparse in those areas (actually, there are tons of platformers, but very few A+ titles), mainly due to the focus of controller (also why many PC-designed titles don't fare well on consoles). Another title which I'm not sure if you might like is Project Nomads, that was recently released. It revolves around building your own floating island base, complete with turrets that you must man to shoot down others looking to steal your stuff. You can get an airplane hanger and fly around dogfighting, which is pretty fun, although I haven't played too far into it yet.

He's not "limiting" himself, that simply happens to be what he likes. Not everyone will like everything, that's how things are. I certainly don't.

My take:

The PC is much more time consuming do to the nature of it's games. They generally fall into the lines of strategy, FPS or sim. I'm just speaking from my PC experience here, these are the three types of games I play.

Strategy and sim games demand a lot more thought and demand that you pay attention to every little thing going on. This completely takes you out of the "real world" and puts you into the game world. A very, very effective way to do so, if you think about it. Age of Mythology and next year, Sim City 4 will be on my PC. These will both drain time from me (actually, I have AOM, it rocks). (on the console, FFT ripped my time up, as well, but it proves the in depth strategy point)

FPS games work so well on PC and become so addicting because the PC interface works ... best. One secret to immersion in games is to give the player such a comfortable, easy-to-use interface that they forget they're using an interface. They feel as if they are directly working the game evironment with their mind because the notion of the mouse/keyboard ceases to exist. But this can work in consoles, as well. Goldeneye and Halo have extremely well designed control interfaces and work in much the same way to immerse as the PC.

And third, this applies to me, my PC is in my office (away from the house). I'm totally away from family and can just relax and play. No bothersome people; no other noises. Nothing.

So, that's my take. PC games suck more time from me but it appears to be that console games are made for more of an arcade environment and instant pleasure. I love both equally (been playing PSO/Mario Party 4/Earthbound lately).

The PC is definitely, of course, lacking in 2d platformers, but I'd put up Crack dot Com's Abuse against any console platformer - it's one of the best games I've had a chance to play.

Pc games are boring as hell.. i play them for five minutes before i quite...i quite on them.. their fun for about five minutes before.. say this boreing.. and unistill and never think about it again..

The PC games I play are ususlly online games so I play those for much longer - while some of the may be attributed to the 'at attention' style one must play in with PC games, PC games or PC style games on Console have held my attention for just as long. Halo and Morrowind are prime examples and odds are I probably would have played Neverwinter Nights more were it on Xbox (yeah I would).

I definitly play PC more, but I own far fewer PC games than I do console games.

You'll notice in my original post I listed a lot more than the 2 types of game you mentioned. And to be quite honest, if I played nothing but shooters for the rest of my life I'd be a happy man. That's pretty much where my collection is going anyway.

I don't know where you've been, but 2D shooters come out all the time. This past year has been especially good, and there's a ton of great stuff on the horizon. Then add up all the older games I've yet to play and I'm pretty much set. 2D platformers are increasingly rare these days, but the GBA does have quite a few.

I see what you mean Neo, but all I see up there is 3 genres. It's all the same to me. And unfortunately out of your list I only see 2 0r 3 interesting things. The reason I don't play PC games is simple- there's so much more out there that fits my tastes on consoles that frankly, PC gaming is a waste of my time.

PC games are generally more addicting for me. Stuff like Torment, Thief Gold, The Longest Journey suck me in like nothing on consoles (though I love console games too and sometimes one [Xenogears, for example] will rival the PC-addiction level but it's rare).

Multiplayer games on pc are more addicting than single player on consoles, i hardly ever play mps on console, because there arnt that many good ones if you dont like fighters and sport games. Infact the last one i can remember really digging into was goldeneye.

Singleplayer games are the same imo no matter what format.

10-15 years ago, I didn't like PC games and I didn't like them when ported to consoles.

However, I think PC games have much improved. For example, I would much rather play most 16-bit RPGs than Wizardry or Eye of the Beholder. But the new RPG games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights are fantastic, totally different and better.

Playing a great strategy game like Advance Wars on the GBA and seeing the way that consoles have unthinkingly and shamelesslly moved away from 2D is another reason I'm interested in trying WarCraft III.

I won't say PC games are better (yet), but they've definitely closed the gap in my mind.

To paraphrase Ford, "Have you played a PC game... lately?" If you didn't like the PC games in the past, it may be time that you try again. Much has changed in the last 10 years.

PC games are generally very addictive because of the genres they happen to be in. There are few substiutes for games like Civ 2, CounterStrike, Diablo, or NWN on consoles. Dynasty Tactics and few others are a few that I can think of.=\

However, I still think that consoles gaming is infinetely superior to PC gaming. It's much more dynamic and covers more of the genres that I enjoy.

Arcade gaming>Console Gaming>PC Gaming> Portable Gaming IMO.
