Alrighty, we've seen plenty of "favorite system" polls which tend to turn into console flame wars. Let us now pick... the best system that wasn't quite!

32X easily. Not a bad system IMO.
I tempted to say Virtual Boy because I love Mario's Tennis and Red Alarm but I'm going to go with the Lynx. Almost all the games I liked on the other machines are available elsewhere.
3DO. I only purchased four games for it, and I enjoyed them all very much.
It's like picking between fatal diseases.
Atari Lynx. Still beats the original GB. Great games, innovative hardware, has given me many years of happy gaming. Even bought a second one.
Also, let me toss out Vectrex. Love my Veccy. Had the kind of arcade feel you just couldn't get elsewhere. Good times.
It must be noted that the Atari 7800 has the one game that no one shall mess with. The eternal, almighty Ninja Golf!

I'm in that same boat. I love Tolero Boxer on the Virtual Boy and if the unit had more than a dozen titles in the US, it could have been something special.
With the Atari Lyne you have a handheld gaming console that did a very competant job of providing game playing fun. I found Road Blasters to be a better playing game, than the PSX emulation of the arcade game. Zarlor Mercenary was a pretty unique shooter and the detail of the ground units was pretty amazing for a handheld. Blue Lightning was Atari's answer to After Burner, but with a little more strategy in survival. Other great titles included Toki, Klax, Todd's adventures in Slimeworld, Switch Blade ( A strider like game) and Chip's Challenge.
Virtual Boy for Mario Tennis alone. Wario was pretty fun too, but i never bothered beating it. now that i think about it, i think i'll do that tonight.

Mmm..Tempest 2000. I would have said Jaguar but the PSX version of it was a little better I felt.
Vitural Boy is automaticly ruled out because it destroys your retinas...Phillips CDi had those "Zelda" games...
3DO had Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo and some quasi-porn...but no...
I'd go w/ 32x just because it was always attached to a Genesis. At least then a 32x owner had at least 1 quality system. And no, I'm not just saying that because I own one. (Plus Cosmic Carnage was decent and Doom was good.)
You know I think the reason Lynx stands out is not that it's the only one of these systems with decent games, but all the others were disappointments and died quickly, and Lynx had a long and fruitful life and never disappointed. I liked some of the 32X games but I was pissed at how quick that thing tanked, and how I never got to get a saturn because of that thing.
I vote for the Saturn.
You forgot the Dreamcast. I vote for that.
It sold like 6 million units. I think the DC was there, it just fell behind too quickly and Sega was too poor to tough it out. The system sold better in it's first year than PSX did.Quote:

I have to say 3DO if only for one game: Star Control 2. The 3DO had the best version of this, one of the greatest games ever made. A stunning mixture of simulation/shooter/RPG elements that has yet to be equalled today. Add the awesome voice acting, moody music, and long-ass open-ended gameplay and you've got a classic there.
The system also had the best version of Return Fire, one of the best multiplayer games of it's time. Always had a blast playing that against my brother before he moved off to college. And some will also argue that with the special 6-button pad, the Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo on 3DO was the best home console version ever of a 2-D SF game.

I'm really uncertain as to what the requisite for an included system is... are they all consoles that were considered to be failues by overall sales? And if so, sales in the US only, or world-wide?
Atari 7800, easily. During it's short run, I played Pole Position, Dig Dug, and Joust until I couldn't see. Not having my own NES at the time (I had a SMS), that was enough for me.
I bought a 3DO with 30 games about three or four years ago, too late to enjoy some of the more impressive games it had to offer. I've never really sat down and tried to play any of them at length, though Return Fire, Star Control, and SF2 are nicely done. Man, Crash N' Burn and Total Eclipse fucking blow.
Torn between the 32X and the Virtual Boy. Ah..32x it is...Am I the only one that enjoyed Shadow Squadron?
Lynx by far. It was ahead of its time, unlike everything else listed there but the VB.

Tough choice, but I voted for the 3DO.
Nintendo Virtual Boy - Only had its quirkiness and Mario to its advantage. More inconvenient to play than a GBA, believe it or not.
Atari Jaguar - I had high hopes for this system, but besides Tempest 2000, it was a big wash-up. I do love that beautiful Atari plastic, however, and I recommend everyone play a Jaguar at least once.
Philips CDi - Never played one, but if those Zelda games were the big selling point to the core gaming audience, then I don't mind passing on it.
Atari 7800 - Good, but not good enough. Don't hate me.
Sega 32X - A big mistake. It had some good games, but it was definitely the Jan Brady of consoles.
Atari Lynx - This was a quality system, but it just kind of sputtered along and never distinguished itself.
3DO - Man, that thing was expensive. Star Control II is an all-time classic (the remake for PC is coming in the next few months - and it will be free) and there were some other nice moments. Too many slick mainstream half-games, but I am itching for a game of Twisted.

Jaguar Doom killed the 32X version. The 32x rev couldn't run in full screen and you could only ever see the front of the enemies. Lame!Quote:

I think the CD-i get bashed way more than it deserves, its only real problem was the controlers... It had the best version of the 7th guest, a great golf game, and Burn Cycle, a pretty good RPGish/Puzzle game, the nintendo games... I picked one up from a electonics store going out of business for dirt cheap (it had the then very pricey DV cart too) and used it for watching VCDs before they became popular..
But i think the best overall not quite was the 7800, awsome controllers, more power than the NES, and 2600 backwards compatablilty to boot.
The 32X was second, only due to its short lifespan, it had a chance for some pretty good titles, but never got a shot.
I vote for Lynx.
Even though I never really played much of it.
The only reason I picked it is I remember looking at the screen shots of Gauntlet and thinking that was the coolest thing ever.
7800 gets my sentimental vote, since it was the first console I ever owned. Besides, it's hard to disregard stuff like Pole Position II and Food Fight.
I'd add the Marty and the Atari 5200 (pimpin' back in the day) to the list. Sega CD sold over 1 million units, so it's right to leave it out.
I rather liked the virtual boy (virtual warioland was great) and 32x is worth having for Space Harrier, Afterburner and Knuckles.
3DO. I'll take my Samurai Shodown and the freakin' arterial spray over everything else.
i go with 32x, seeing as how i own every game for that system. blackthorne, space harrier, virtua racing delux, and doom all kicked ass. star wars arcade wasn't bad either.
the 3do is a close second, though. i own a ton of games for that sysytem, too. super street fighter 2: turbo, star control 2, captain quazer, and a few others make it an decent system.
Actually Sega CD sold just shy of 3 Million =/ I think at least.
I vote 32X but the Lynx and 7800 are so very very close.

I voted for the Jaguar. I was in high school when it came out, and I was more than a little hyped about it. "It's 64-bit, for cryin' out loud!"
Of course, once I finally got one it didn't take all that long to realize it wasn't going to meet my expectations, but I had enough fun with Cybermorph, Tempest 2000, AVP, Raiden, Rayman and more to justify the purchase.
'Cause television is the retina of the mind's eye. ;)
Nintendo Virtual Boy, it's the only one that (still) offers a unique and fun experience. The rest were nothing special.
A fun experience? I found it downright irritating (to my eyes).
Jaguar Doom didn't run in full screen either unless you input a code(The hell was that for?). But yeah your right. Don't forget the 32x version only had something like 15 levels and was missing some of the major enemies.Quote:

Star Wars Arcade owned me. At least it did back when it came out, not sure how it fares now...

I was never irritated. I prefer Wario on VB to any other Wario ever. I would have liked color better, but as it was, it was still my favorite one on the list.Quote:

Oh snap. I voted for the Virtual Boy. I didn't really mean to - before I knew what I was doing the results page had already loaded. I don't even own a Virtual Boy. I probably should have voted for the Lynx, seeing as how I have at least 4 Lynxeseses lying around the house. I really dug that system. Blue Lightning was the coolest thing ever. Gotta get me the Jaguar CD version of that and HIGHLANDER!: THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!: THE MOVIE!: THE SHOW: THE GAME! Gotta love the Jaguar CD. Not enough add-ons that make your console look like a toilet.

Virtual Boy for me. It's the only machine of those listed that I would dare get close to.
if you beat the game all the way through (including levels 16 & 17) in one sitting, you get the real ending. it's nothing special, though. the game just lets you blast each bad guy that appears in the game.Quote:

It was more like 8.5 million to 9 million units sold. It sold nearly 4 million units in the US alone. The US Dreamcast launch, was the most succesful of any console, until the PS2 came along. I have a feeling that was another deflating moment for Sega, on the hopes of the DC being a contender.
Trip Hawkins had a vision. And some good games. It's just the price was too high. If only the 3DO were cheaper...

Yeah! The price was rediculous. The 3DO was what I envisioned Sega CD was going to be like. The FMV games were'nt grainy and lacking colors and some of the games were pretty good, but by the time the price hit $300, Sega and Sony's better hardware arrived.

I've enjoyed everyone of those games, but never go to play Brutal Sports Football or Missile Command 3D. I'd like to add great games like Powerdrive Rally, Wolfenstein, Theme Park and Syndicate, to that list.
I voted for 3DO, it had some decent games even if they were nothing to write home about ;)
The Neo Geo could almost really be in that list to since it really never took off due to the extremely high price... but that would make this a easy pick poll :)
It's the Lynx.
There were some decent arcade titles for it (Xybots, Stun Runner, Toki, Rygar, etc.). Road Blasters even has the voice in it... something the Genesis version didn't do. The voice is clear as a bell. The PlayStation Road Blasters is a bit buggy... at one time, the Marble Madness music kicked in (go figure that).
What a shame it is that the Lynx didn't get Japanese developers working on it. That would've ensured a wider selection of games and more arcade titles.
Virtual Boy, for me. Wario and Tennis alone are worth it.
