What do you do for a living?

This has probably been done a million times before but I missed all of them - so here it is again... I just wanna see what type of hard working Americans, lazy arsed Candians and job stealing immigrants we have here at TNL! *soooooooo joking* ;)


I myself work as a music seller at the Borders Books and Music here in Stafford, Texas. Its not the best job I could have but definitly the king of retail jobs for me personally - I get the occasional nice customer and get to plug metal bands any and every chance I get. I've been working there since August of 2000. Damn long time.

Oh yeah - I suppose I should also mention that I'm a college student - been since fall of 2000....hmm...man i really outta find out what level i'm at - i think i'm close to being a junior now. I'm so unorganzied in that respect of knowing whats going on. ANyway - I go right now to Wharton County Junior College in Sugarland, TX - I was going to UH but was miserable there so I came to a JC to get my basic courses done cheaply and in a much much better environment - i like this new college better than UH - and when I go back to UH in fall of 2003 i'll be better prepared mentally. 2000 and 2001 were rough years to say the least.

I work for Rutgers University as a Program Coordinator for the Continuing Professional Education and Outreach department. I set up and run courses for Environmental Scientists.

My other job is a part-time martial arts instructor and also a volunteer women's self-defense instructor.

I work in Marketing for a Doppler radar company... been here since 1999. I like it; it's interesting technology that benefits a lot of people. But lately I've started looking for a job with better pay :)

Hitman. Really, I thought I should do something I love, and it helps that I'm good at it.

Work at Jim's Fish Camp, a bait and tackle store right next to my house. My folks own it and run it too. It pays shit, but there are alot of advantages working there. The biggest is that basically I can just play videogames all day. My mornings start with half an hour of Third Strike :)

I.....I work at frikkin Old Navy. I do shipment, so I go to work at 5:30 almost every morning. Most of the other people I work with are slow, so i end up working 12 hours almost everyday.

Looking at everyone else's posts, my job sucks. Can't wait til I graduate.

I'm a ceramics major. I've wanted to go to art school for ceramics since about 7th grade. They have the best sculptural ceramics program in the us. though alfred has the best potter program.

Rich... this college was founded durning the arts and crafts movement in the 1900's. Its actually very cool. Go visit if you dont belive me.

Regus, I have no idea if this place has a graphic design, I think it does, but its not my field. but if they do, it'd be a pretty good one. Lots of computers... yay.

Multimedia Design Major (was Fine Art major) at University of Oregon. Jobless right now (thank you very much, financial aid), but I was a Multimedia Tutor for a while, and I do conceptual character design and art on the side, when the opportunity arises. I was about to get a job at Software Etc., but, I'm really past that point in my life where being a retail monkey for $6.50 an hour can cut it.

I sit at my desk and look at my calendar to see when I get my next vacation. Then I eat some fruit and wonder how much time has passed since I last looked at my calendar.

Part-time helpdesk for a local community college collective's distance learning online courses and full-time student in Comp. Info. Systems at the Univ. of Houston - Downtown. CIS is basically MIS, so I'll be in a full-time IT job hopefully not too long after I graduate.

I pretty much bother the fuck out of my family.

Not much. I've been hovering near "hobo" for quite some time. That being said I'm a Cartoonist/animator that needs work.

Not a bad job, lots of attractive women come by, get all the free gas, car work, junk food and soft drinks I want, and when it gets slow, just read, watch TV, or play my Game Boy. Really can't ask for much more :D

The thing about that Womens self-defence class is that most of the students look like Jabba the Hutt. Its not like anyone would ever want to rape them, and snatching a purse from a 300 lb. ogre is too difficult for a thief to even bother with.

man - i was hapkido (i'm you know what it is zerodash but for others its korean street fighting - banned in USA tournaments! - haha) for about 8 years and had a great old time. We actually did have a good amount of fine chicks in there learning how to defend themselves. This one woman who was in the class when I first joined actually managed to beat the shit out of a guy who tried to assualt her in her apartment's parking lot - she broke his arm and cut his face with a knife she carried with her. OUCH!!

The class was actually run out in my instructors backyard (his garage was also in the backyard as well - (wierd i know - but it was set up with weights and punching bags) two streets away from me - it was a small class - perfect for learning alot - only about 17 ppl there at most - he didn't do it for the money - the 20 bucks a month we paid him were just to pay for his insurance costs for the whole 'school'. Anyway, the mats we had were only (i kid you not) barely an inch thick laid out over hard concrete! It hurt like hell at first but after awhile we got used to it. *Actually I remeber when we visited this other school - real nice place- indoors and everything - when we used their huge ass plush mats we all laughed at how it was like falling on pillows - and that class thought that those were the hardest mats ever - pshaw!!!!!!

Anway I got all the way up to purple belt which was pretty good - as advancement in hapkido is dreadfully slow - I don't actually ever remember seeing anyone reach above a brown belt in my time there. Er...what was my point in all this - i dunno! BYE!!!!!!!!!!

I basically reproduce material in the collection for research purposes: rare books, manuscripts, and archival photographs and negatives. Every day I come across something mind-blowing; today it was a series of letters by William Tecumseh Sherman. The collection has everything from illuminated Chaucer manuscripts to original drawings by John James Audubon to engravings by William Blake. The pay isn't the greatest, but the experience is fantastic. It's almost like working in a museum. I tried to get a job here for four years, and it was worth the wait and perseverance.

Oh, I have a degree in Radio Broadcasting....there are thousands of college graduates who never end up working in the field of their degree of study. I've got a friend who was a Journalism major who now works for Amtrak - and loves it.

I work for a Architecture firm that specializes in restoration and rehabilitation of existing structures, we get to work on some very nice historical buildings. I have worked on various UCONN University buildings and even on the retoration of the US Capitol Dome in Washington DC :)

OK, my turn. I go to school on and off. Im going back in the spring. Don't ask what for cause really, I don't know. Job-wise I have the most depressing job of all. I work for Gamestop. Yea, I have to deal with all those damn tools that come in there. I just want to smack each and every one of "TEH HARDCORE" that comes in there. God, why do I work there? The only good that comes out of there is the swag, and when I get people to buy SEGA and only to have them return it to say it sucked. Gives me pleasure that they have to take time out their day to return a fantastic game that they said sucks. Fuckers.

I dunno, but to me this seems like a pretty basic application of a noncompete clause...I didn't know they put those in EB contracts, but, might as well, and it makes sense.

If you won a judgment against EB, at best you'd get back the lost wages that you would've earned (I think), which probably wouldn't be enough to justify doing anything.

Also, EB doesn't seem to have done anything wrong - think about it, you're competing with EB while being paid by them. You also could've been profiting from your employee discount or your contact with incoming EB used games.

Yeah - Gamestop has the same policy. I don't know for sure if you can fight that. Whether or not you're buying the games from EB or Gamestop you're still comptetinhg with the employeer. It's much the same as buying items directly off a cutomer from your pocket -- EVEN IF THE STORE DOESN'T SELL THE BOUGHT ITEM -- I know this because I recived a stern warning about it from my DM (I bought a TG16 from a customer since Gamestop doesn't buy them). He told me I should get fired for it, but as it was, I was a fixture there and he had to know as well as anyone else that if I was fired that store would lose many customers as a result :) There were cheaper prices all around that store (11 diffrent locations to buy games within a 2 mile radius) and lots of cutsomers stayed at mine because I was a good guy so to speak.

But I digress... you likely won't be able to contest that - but I'm not a lawyer.

Soo.. you don't do anything except when Exchange gives you hell (it does doesn't it?). I do basically the same thing with some customer service thrown in there (I work late - I'm at work now - so I serve multiple purposes, well, all purposes. I still say that Gamestop policy is complete crap - I mean, from what I remember hearing about it - they'd apply it to an employee's actions away from work as well. Such as if you were buying games from customers who came in the store say at the customers own house (a private residence) - Gamestop if they found out could still manage to fire you.

I work at a small little restaurant as a waitress(I am a man, but working at what feels like a truck stop diner has caused me to feel very waitressy). Go to school, too. No matter how depressing you think your job is, try waiting on the same old people day after day who have nothing better to look forward to then death. Fine by me though, they are very crappy tippers.

Tracer, I wouldn't say I do nothing. My post count compared to others should indicate that. :) While the database admin side is quiet, I'm the only person who knows their way around the backend of our systems here. So I wind up doing a lot of custom reports, troubleshooting, occasional module creation, etc. Exchange is livable (it does give me fits, especially when we were used for a relay early this year). I'd say 40% of my time is report-writing, 30% is progam admin/troubleshooting for our back office software, and the rest is DBA duties and other I.T. stuff. It pays the bills. :)

Find some ambition, quit smokin' the reefer, and go to college, kids.

Ambition for me always tends to be replaced with apathy. Yes I know thats a defeatist attitude but hell...

(1) I'm sure it seems unfair that Gamestop fired you; (2) Valid arguments could be made on your behalf; (3) You would, in all likelihood, still lose the case for a variety of reasons (not the least of which would be that you were probably an at-will employee who could be terminated at any time, for any reason, so long as it did not violate a fundamental public policy); (4) even if you could win, it would not be even remotely financially worthwhile to pursue (for either you, or your lawyer.)

Sorry, man, but I would recommend putting your efforts into finding another job, or making equivalent money off of continued e-bay sales. Alternatively, you could start a one-man rally outside that particular Gamestop, and repeatedly yell "No justice, no peace!!"

the thing is i wasnt buying. and if i was, there isnt anything wrong from buying from another store if i was working for them. its the part that me selling something on ebay that wasnt complete (cart only), 2 months before i worked there. than me buying the same item that was complete for myself and them firing me saying i used my discount to buy it and sell it.

the only things i bought since i worked there was FFII and FFIII..both complete for the snes, and a bunch of anime dvds..thats it

thanks for the input. within a couple days of me being fired, i went and got a security guard job. getting paid better and if i can get into the security guard job, i can get into anything, their extensive background check is as extensive as the FBI (the head-honchos work in the FBI as well)

i said the same, if i did win, all the money would just go to the lawyer. unfortunately, none of my relatives are lawyers..either doctors, postal employees, and other types

Right now, I work at the computer store on the campus of CSU Long Beach. I do grunt work, paper work, and take a lot of phone calls. Outside of that, I'm the usual full-time college student, do lots of drawing (I can't wait to show you guys what I've done this semester in class), and even started doing small comic strips.

Um....live at home + no car = long commute. I've heard of a few places on campus that are looking for graphic artists, yet I don't know if what I do would be considered as design as true design works.

and...that's it.

I'm a history and politics double-major at the University of Toronto. (T-Dot!!)

I work at EB and love/hate every minute of it.

In my spare time, I write bad pieces of fiction, think of counter-factuals (example, what would happen if I wasn't a loser?), push the elderly down tall flights of stairs, and think of ways to remix Mega-Man songs.

Hahaha, I actually like cart duty. It's completely brainless (even moreso than packing bags) and it's good exercise coupled with fresh air, so it's a nice break from standing in one spot and trying to be nice to the fat, ugly, smelly, inbred locals. Also, all our baggers have a schedule for their shift, so our cart duties (usually 1 hour at a time) are pre-determined by the manager in the morning.

Yeah, we have shiftleaders like yourself, and they *still* have to tell some people to get their asses outside and bring the carts in (among other essential duties of the position). I may have a stupid job, but I myself am far from it, yet there are others I work with who fit the position, if you will. ;)

I dunno about any of your underlings, but I *like* doing the cleaning chores. I'm usually first to volunteer to crush bottles (recycling stuff), clean the break room, re-stock the bags, etc. Bagging groceries gets old *fast*, and there's no sense of accomplishment at all... the customers keep on coming. Stupid customers. Really, my job isn't that bad, considering I make decent money given my location, there isn't much responsibility on my part, the hours are flexible, and it's just so wicked easy.

I'm supposed to be a stocker (dry goods) at a grocery store (they use the PT'ers during store hours to stock... probably saves 'em money), but I am often called up front to bag groceries on real busy days such as today. It's not too bad; I prefer to stock some days, and bag on others. Variety makes work go by faster.

For you other grocery store employees: Do your stores require that baggers take out groceries with customers? It has been a policy that has been increasingly pushed for as long as I've worked there, and I know before then also. In fact, we had a meeting today about it. I work at Winn-Dixie, which I believe is east of Texas and south of NC.

Busy for you today, too? Man, we were slammed. My entire shift (I got off at 7:30), and they're probably still busy. I hadn't seen it that busy since the holidays last year.

We're not required to help customers out, but we are supposed to ask if they'd like us to. Common sense applies here: if a customer has more than one cart of stuff, they'll need help out, or if a lady (or guy, whatever) with 6 kids comes through, she might want someone to load her groceries while she situates her offspring.

I hail from Hannaford/Shop 'N Save, one of the largest (if not the largest) supermarket chains in New England.

I haven't been able to stock for two weeks (I only work weekends), so being able to tomorrow/next week would be nice. Not very pressured for time or performance and the work is real easy.

I just hate that dang Latin American music that tends to come on all the time.

heh - man..just wait until christmas music is all you hear - then you'll be wishing like hell for that latin stuff!!

good thing we control all the music upstairs - nothing says Christmas like happy hardcore...

I'm a full-time editor at Penn State (PR department) and also a freelancer for places such as ToyFare...I am soon taking my GREs so I can apply to grad school for my MFA in creative fiction.

I also do short fiction and design work for Web/print and just about anything related to writing/editing/design/Web development that people will pay me to do...
