Within the last month I've suddenly had this problem as well. Mine is also from 9/9/99. Mine seems to work if I push down on the discfirmly before closing the lid. Only works once out of every 3 or 4 tries though.Quote:

dont mess with the calibrating or "pot" adjustment. your system might work fine for a bit but WILL die again and wont be fixable after that poont without a new drive.

Wth are people so cautious about opening things up?. It's like freakin 5 screws. It's like taking a case off a computer to change RAM or to add a component. Everything is in place. It's like taking the lid off a VCR to wipe the heads clean.Quote:

The chance that you'll screw up the system because you open it is as likely as dying in Harmony of Dissonance (ie: never!!!) Seriously though, I don't know why people have this paranoia about opening things up. Things are not even fragile else, you wouldn't even be able to move your system from place to place period.
And I'm no engineer, I don't take apart things for fun etc etc. The fear is just unfounded.
If that's the case, it's a dead disc drive, the most common defect in Dreamcasts. You can get new ones from http://www.ncsx.org I replaced a dead drive early this year. Works as good as new. And the only thing you need to know how to do is wield a screwdriver. No soldering wires, no taking out and putting in wires... simply knowing how to turn a screwdriver clockwise and counterclockwise.Quote:

It has to be one of the better constructed consoles out there. Yes the lasers die, as do the lasers in ANY electronic device. Its a moving part, they break.
You can't real compare CD based consoles to the consoles of old, Yes my SNES, 2600, Genesis, and SMS consoles still run becuase the hard no moving parts, which left little to break.
Granted the control port issue comes up a bit, but its a cheap and easy fix.
if the CD won't spin, it might be a power source issue..
of course, there are ways to test the power source.
yes....like putting your tongue on the power board when its turned on....YUMMY!
...or...perhaps..something like using a multimeter might be a bit safer.

I bought my Saturn at launch for the US (Toys R US) I have probably played that console more than my PSX, N64, PS2 and Dreamcast combined and have not had any problems with the laser drive or the console either.
I bought my DC on 9/9/99 and it died 2 weeks after the one year warranty expired. It was'nt even the CD drive that died, but had something to do with the graphics chip, as the textures had a grainy look to them and the only games that did'nt have any problems, were the Windows CE programmmed titles.
I've heard of plenty of problems with the launch DC's, but I have a feeling that the consoles made after launch have been very reliable.
My Saturn still works fine after seven+ years of hard gaming on it. My DC broke down a couple of times, thankfully, the EB warranty was there to bail me out.
