True, and I'm not making light of your situation, but I wouldn't go sending Sega $55 or stressing over opening it, either. Worse comes to worse, pick up a used model that works.
I'm on my 3rd DC. Actually... 4th, but one of them was only for like 2 weeks and I gave it to my sister.
I know what you mean, but i like to take my chances and repair my DC, and beside here in PR used DC are way to expensive $60+ dolarsQuote:

Here's the last thing mentioned about it from NCS (2 weeks ago):Quote:

Dreamcast GD-Rom replacements are expected within 2-3 weeks but supplies have been scarce since summer.

Just be on the lookout for it. They're pretty much the only vendor which has DC parts.
For the record, I own 3 DCs, and the drive on the oldest one (an Asian 1998? model) died. I replaced it with a drive from NCS and now all 3 are fully-functional.
thx

For the love of god just go here. I dunno if anyone posted this yet but you can have your DC Repaired here. They are licensed by Sega so you can trust them to do the job right. I sent my SegaCD in and they repaired it.
They only just recently last year stopped repairing Master Systems..
