My DC died less then a year from the launch :(
Had to replace it then !
You could send it to SEGA for $55 plus shipping.
I'm actually still having problems with my DC the screen goes black when I'm playing games and doesn't always reset. I've even cleaned the lens, but am not willing to take it apart.
I may have to pick up another used one.
Maybe you can get a replacement drive from National Console Support?

This goes out to all my Sega Dreamcast soldiers...
Props for all the great memories.
You won't be forgotten.
Peaze out.

Do you hear the CD drive start spinning when you put in a disk? If you do, then I'd try cleaning the lens with a cd lens cleaner. If you don't hear the CD player spinning, then your cd drive is toast.
I hear it spinning but it make strange noises, it was working fine yesterday I have always take good care of my DC so why this shit has to happen now that they are a pain in the ass to find a good one :(Quote:

Look at the laser lens. Mine sits at the outside part of the CD. Gently pull the laser lens inward to the center spindle. Try a disk then. If you have'nt used a laser lens cleaner yet, I would do so now. Don't use isoprophal alcahol, as it has mineral oils in it. Use a true laser lens cleaning kit.
My old DC had this problem once, after browsing the net with it. I pulled the lens to the center and it booted up fine. It made a start/stop noise with the cd drive when it was'nt working.
The DC was pretty porly made, even though you don't hear as much bitching about it as you do about the PSX. My first DC's door mechanism broke after 6 months or so. There also have been many reports of optical drives & controller ports going out.
I actually dread every time I turn mine on. I just know someday it won't work correctly & I will cry all day long.

In my desperation I start searching the net for solution and found this:
Can some1 tell me if this would work? I don’t want to risk in opening my DCQuote:
Your dreamcast probally need calibrating, you can do this yourself by unscrewing the dreamcast you have to remove the modem to get to one of them. Then when you have the cover of just move the wires from under the clips (they are to the right if you are facing forward) and then push the laser eye down (away from the spindle) then all you do is lift the laser and fold it over the you should see a little dial thing just move this a bit, i mean just a little bit to the right (if you are facing forward) then just put the laser back and put the lid back on don't screw it on and then try your dreamcast if the cd catches just push down on the lid a bit if it works screw it back together if it does'nt then try and move the dial thing on the laser a bit more to the right until it works it helps if you try and remeber were it was before you more it so you can put it back if it gets worse.
Azza
If you need easier instructions then send me a email at aaronalam@hotmail.com and i will send you the web site address because you can't post it here because it gets moved
Within the last month I've suddenly had this problem as well. Mine is also from 9/9/99. Mine seems to work if I push down on the discfirmly before closing the lid. Only works once out of every 3 or 4 tries though.Quote:

dont mess with the calibrating or "pot" adjustment. your system might work fine for a bit but WILL die again and wont be fixable after that poont without a new drive.
Now the CD won't spin :( could this mean the end for my DC?
Wth are people so cautious about opening things up?. It's like freakin 5 screws. It's like taking a case off a computer to change RAM or to add a component. Everything is in place. It's like taking the lid off a VCR to wipe the heads clean.Quote:

The chance that you'll screw up the system because you open it is as likely as dying in Harmony of Dissonance (ie: never!!!) Seriously though, I don't know why people have this paranoia about opening things up. Things are not even fragile else, you wouldn't even be able to move your system from place to place period.
And I'm no engineer, I don't take apart things for fun etc etc. The fear is just unfounded.
If that's the case, it's a dead disc drive, the most common defect in Dreamcasts. You can get new ones from http://www.ncsx.org I replaced a dead drive early this year. Works as good as new. And the only thing you need to know how to do is wield a screwdriver. No soldering wires, no taking out and putting in wires... simply knowing how to turn a screwdriver clockwise and counterclockwise.Quote:

It has to be one of the better constructed consoles out there. Yes the lasers die, as do the lasers in ANY electronic device. Its a moving part, they break.
You can't real compare CD based consoles to the consoles of old, Yes my SNES, 2600, Genesis, and SMS consoles still run becuase the hard no moving parts, which left little to break.
Granted the control port issue comes up a bit, but its a cheap and easy fix.
if the CD won't spin, it might be a power source issue..
of course, there are ways to test the power source.
yes....like putting your tongue on the power board when its turned on....YUMMY!
...or...perhaps..something like using a multimeter might be a bit safer.

I bought my Saturn at launch for the US (Toys R US) I have probably played that console more than my PSX, N64, PS2 and Dreamcast combined and have not had any problems with the laser drive or the console either.
I bought my DC on 9/9/99 and it died 2 weeks after the one year warranty expired. It was'nt even the CD drive that died, but had something to do with the graphics chip, as the textures had a grainy look to them and the only games that did'nt have any problems, were the Windows CE programmmed titles.
I've heard of plenty of problems with the launch DC's, but I have a feeling that the consoles made after launch have been very reliable.
My Saturn still works fine after seven+ years of hard gaming on it. My DC broke down a couple of times, thankfully, the EB warranty was there to bail me out.
DC's aren't exactly expensive.
Bleh, that sucks.
yea but you can't find new onesQuote:

True, and I'm not making light of your situation, but I wouldn't go sending Sega $55 or stressing over opening it, either. Worse comes to worse, pick up a used model that works.
I'm on my 3rd DC. Actually... 4th, but one of them was only for like 2 weeks and I gave it to my sister.
I know what you mean, but i like to take my chances and repair my DC, and beside here in PR used DC are way to expensive $60+ dolarsQuote:

Here's the last thing mentioned about it from NCS (2 weeks ago):Quote:

Dreamcast GD-Rom replacements are expected within 2-3 weeks but supplies have been scarce since summer.

Just be on the lookout for it. They're pretty much the only vendor which has DC parts.
For the record, I own 3 DCs, and the drive on the oldest one (an Asian 1998? model) died. I replaced it with a drive from NCS and now all 3 are fully-functional.
thx

For the love of god just go here. I dunno if anyone posted this yet but you can have your DC Repaired here. They are licensed by Sega so you can trust them to do the job right. I sent my SegaCD in and they repaired it.
They only just recently last year stopped repairing Master Systems..

Good Luck man..
Bonuskun: Sweet! Maybe I can finally fix that broken CDX I've got!
thx :)
same here.. i own a saturn, CDX, and 2 DC's... they all run perfectly.. never any problems..
Just fix it. I've fixed my broken DC 2 times, open her up and see what you can do!
The ports in my domestic DC fried. I am told all I have to do is replace the 5v battery to get it going again. Made me think that I was going to also have to get a new X-Arcade stick. Good thing I have two (jpn one is modded to play both using old "battery trick" :)
My DC didn’t gave me any problems until today *look at the time* I mean yesterdayQuote:

grab it if you still can.. the guy's a fool if that's his only dc.
I just want to chime in that my 9/9/99 Dreamcast hasn't failed on me yet. Even after two drops from 3+ feet. Just keeps chugging along. I'll probably kill it later this month trying to play REZ on it with my luck though.
Actually I'm gonna do some searching I think and find an untouched DC, for me. I walked into EB and they had cut the prices drastically on some leftover DC games.
Plus I never finished my skies of arcadia game...
Yeah, I can't wait till I see DC controllers for $1 like the Saturn's 3D pads. *drool*
thx I think I willQuote:

I would guess he needs some broken DC's for some spare parts. I know I've needed them in the past.
They are like $5 at best buy, new...Quote:

Well, my 9/9/99 Dreamcast died today too, just like the original post in this thread describes. Excuse me as I softly hum "Taps" with my armpits ... nyuk, nyuk, we Pennsylvanian rednecks and our humor...
I've already bought a used DC today, w/1 yr warranty, for only $37.99. This included all the cables and a controller ... not a bad deal.
My DC has been played a LOT, sometimes played for hours on end. I'd bet that Caf jr played even more hrs on it than I did. Given the system is so cheap to buy, I didn't bother fixing it.
