As my quest for import shmups continues, I've come across this PSX title. I've never played the original (at least I don't think I have) and it looks intriguing. Has anyone played it?

It's great. Zanac X Zanac features the original Famicom Zanac and the all new Zanac Neo for PS1.
Zanac Neo has a different combo system than the Cave type games- here, your combo will just keep on growing as long as you can kill enemies without letting one get away.

Like Compile's other game Space Megaforce, you get different numbers for different weapons. You can level up a weapon several times. Get hit and you lose the power level on whatever weapon you're currently carrying.

It's awesome! I'd never played the original Zanac so I forced myself to beat it before really digging into Zanac Neo. The original Zanac is really tough, vicious old school action like I'd never experienced in a shmup before. It took me three hours to beat but man, it was one cool and atmospheric little 8 bit shmup. Love those evil stationary bosses with the eyes that just sit there and pump bullets at you. Ironically I still haven't gotten around to finishing Neo but that's just due to all my other shmups which get in the way. :D Now if only Compile would make a new Aleste/MUSHA sequel.
Oh yeah and Neo rocks too. :)
Although I'm not a huge fan of the original Zanac, Compile is my favorite shooter developer so I will be getting Zanac X Zanac some time.
How does Zanac Neo compare to Space Megaforce or MUSHA?
Like I said I still have yet to finish Neo, but IMHO it's very close to MUSHA'S quality.
buy it
1. It's much more like Space Megaforce. 2. But it doesn't have the quality or memorability of either.Quote:

I hate the chaining system. It is tedious. The bosses are much like Zanac's (lifeless bases for the most part), which is OK for 15+ years ago, but is about as boring as chaining enemies. The whole feel and presentation of this game feels off. Too polished graphically, musically flat and the gameplay is unchallenging and "bleh." This can be blamed on the typical Compile overkill weapons system, the boring enemies, the endless extra lives and a number of other things.
Musically flat!? I keel you!
I'd say pick it up for sure if you played (and enjoyed) Zanac, otherwise, you might not get a lot out of it. It's a very 'retro' shooter, in a generally unkind way. On the other hand, if you were into Zanac, it's like snacking on pure nostalgia.
:wtf: You must be some kind of shooter god - that game was bleeding impossible (as I recall).Quote:

If Neo is in the same vein as Zanac and Space Mega Force (which is still probably my favourite shooter of all time), I guess my PSone list just got another addition...damn, I was so close to being done with it, too.
ZanacXZanac is a great game...it's not that tough to beat, but scoring high and keeping your hit count going is the real challenge. Basically the goal is to hit every enemy on the screen to keep the chain alive. Gets quite tough later on in the game. Definitely pick it up.
I'll say this, there were a few moments during those 3 hours of my life where I felt like giving up on the last two or so levels. But after a bit more perseverance (man, I didn't want to have to play the zillion or so levels of the game again unless I'd beaten it, would've been rough to start all over again another day) and finding out how to get more lives by hitting those secret face-icon things I eventually won out. Beating it definitely felt satisfying.Quote:

Score challenge, for anyone interested.
